The sound of buzzing bees is not everyone's idea of tranquillity, but it is a precious sound for those dedicated to protecting them.

00:00What I like the most about bees is that they have a perfect organization.

00:06Each individual has a function in their hive.

00:10Some are going to take care, some are going to clean, others are going to bring food.

00:14And all of that makes them an organized society.

00:18And everything is perfect.

00:20I think that if we replicated a scheme like bees in society,

00:25we would be a much more conscious and functional society.

00:30My name is Adriana Belis.

00:32I am the Operating Director of Rescues for Aveja Negra SOS.

00:37Rescues for Aveja Negra SOS

00:50Aveja Negra is a company that was created to be an alternative

00:56for all of the bees that are in the city,

01:00so that they can pose a risk.

01:03The government protocol is to eliminate them,

01:06and what we do is to rescue them from an urban area

01:09to move them to a rural area where they can live in peace.

01:13And we don't harm them or anyone around them.

01:24The process of rescue for Aveja Negra starts when a user contacts us.

01:30Most of the cases that come to us are difficult cases.

01:36Every time we come to a rescue, we have to make a diagnosis

01:40to know how to make sure that our work will be safe

01:44and that we are not going to harm the bees or the population.

01:50The theory of a rescue is to take the honeycombs

01:54where the bees lay their eggs,

01:58and a little bit of food reserves, such as honey, pollen,

02:03take all those honeycombs and put them in transport boxes.

02:09Rescuing is very tiring, it's too exhausting.

02:13It requires a lot of concentration, you have to make a lot of effort,

02:17it's heavy to be carrying.

02:20The things I have to do in this organization are the rescue from above.

02:24The team cannot access.

02:26There are times when there is a sewer where the girls cannot enter.

02:32My main responsibility is to make a viable and good rescue for the environment of the bees.

02:42When we have a successful rescue, it is very satisfying

02:47because the user is happy,

02:51they feel like they are contributing.

02:55I didn't kill them, it's a win-win.

02:58They win, we win, and so do the bees.

03:08Once the rescue is over, there is the rehabilitation part.

03:14Our nurses will help rehabilitate our new hives.

03:22As part of the rehabilitation, we focus on the most basic things.

03:27One, that they are healthy.

03:29If they are sick, we have to give them treatments.

03:32Two, we need them to be strong, so we have to feed them.

03:37Three, we need to increase the population.

03:43After that, there is a series of treatments,

03:46from keeping them clean, giving them water.

03:49The process takes between three to six months

03:52for them to be viable and to be able to donate to a beekeeper.

03:58We have 602 successful rescues.

04:02The smallest one that we rescued has 10,000 bees.

04:05And the biggest one has up to 100,000 bees.

04:09So, I can say that I have millions.

04:23The importance of a bee lies in everything it does for us.

04:27By us, I don't mean humans, but the whole ecosystem.

04:31It is an important ecological modulator.

04:34Pollination is the most important thing they do.

04:37By having such a large population, it makes them so efficient.

04:41Millions of bees in a hive can pollinate meters and meters of plants.

04:47All this that they pollinate helps to have plants,

04:51and many plants are food for fauna.

04:54In the end, it also impacts humans.

04:57Their importance is too much,

04:59and the truth is that not all people understand it

05:03and think that bees are the same as honey,

05:06and bees are the same as saving the world.

05:11I would love for bees to have more opportunities in the future.

05:18I don't want them to be demonized.

05:20They are a species that helps us a lot and that we must take care of.

05:24My hope is that there will be more beekeepers.

05:28My big dream is that black bees can be everywhere in the world.

05:33If there was a black bee in each country, it would have a domino effect.
