“We owe that to Henry and to all who loved him. They deserve answers and this review will provide them,” the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood tells the House of Commons as she announces an independent review into the murder of student Henry Nowak, who was stabbed to death as he walked home in Southampton. Henry Nowak's family have welcomed the review, saying they hope it will “uncover the truth”. Report by Gluszczykm. 00:00Thank you, Mr Speaker. Last December, Henry Novak's life was cut short in a horrific and senseless act of violence.
00:08My thoughts today are with Henry's family and his friends, who have shown extraordinary courage and dignity.
00:13Today, I can announce an independent review led by a former Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Alex Chalk, KC.
00:21It will investigate what was known about the perpetrator, including any missed opportunities to intervene.
00:26It will look at the Novak family's experience of the criminal justice system and whether they were supported in the
00:32manner they should have been.
00:33Once the Independent Office for Police Conduct has concluded its investigation into the police response,
00:39this review will also consider the actions of the IOPC and, if necessary, the police.
00:45The full terms of reference have been published today and an initial report will be submitted to me within five
00:50months.
00:50We must get to the truth of what happened before, during and after that awful night.
00:56And we must do everything in our power to ensure that no family suffers the same fate.
01:01We owe that to Henry and to all who loved him.
01:04They deserve answers and this review will provide them.
