00:00Democratic lawmakers request special counsel investigation into whether Jared Kushner acted as an unregistered foreign agent.
00:07Last week, Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Jamie Raskin asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Jared Kushner,
00:17a former senior White House adviser to his father-in-law Donald Trump, for possibly acting as an unregistered foreign agent.
00:25Wyden, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and Raskin, ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability,
00:31said in a statement on Oct. 24 that investigators found Kushner's firm, Affinity Partners,
00:38had received more than $150 million since the end of Trump's term from foreign clients,
00:44while generating no return on investment.
00:47The investigation found $87 million came from the Saudi government,
00:52and the company has only invested, quote,

01:03The payments came as Kushner remained politically active, specifically on matters of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, the statement said.
01:10The letter also cites an Oct. 4 Reuters report alleging Kushner, quote,
01:15discussed U.S.-Saudi diplomatic negotiations involving Israel with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
01:23multiple times since leaving the Trump administration.
01:27The letter from lawmakers to Garland said there is, quote,
01:30substantial reason to believe the Saudi government's decision to engage Affinity 4 Investment Advice
01:36is a fig leaf for funneling money directly, end quote, to Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump,
01:42noting that Kushner had no experience in private equity prior to starting Affinity.
01:47Quote, for years, I've been investigating Jared Kushner's business deals with foreign governments,
01:52Wyden said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
01:56Quote, he's masquerading as an investment manager,
01:59but the evidence I've seen makes him look like an unregistered foreign agent.
