00:00The phenomenon of tobacco, the methods to combat it, the alternatives to the classic
00:09combustion products, the centrality of the relationship between doctor and patient in the
00:14reduction of health risks. These are the main issues addressed during the
00:19convention Habitual Smoking, the discussion led by the experts held in Rome in the context of
00:24Roma Cuore 2024.
00:26Tobacco is something that requires even more empathy in the doctor-patient relationship and, unfortunately,
00:34it has been seen that one or two minutes are insufficient times, as well as an
00:41out-of-the-blue question of how many cigarettes have been smoked for how long, without then
00:46developing a project for its cessation.
00:50This year's convention was the 21st edition of one of the most anticipated events by the
00:55Roman medical community and also represented the opportunity to compare it with the approach
00:59adopted in other countries and by international health authorities. Among the central themes
01:04remains the exposure to nicotine, however, also produced by non-combustible devices.
01:09Nicotine is always a big issue, since these products contain nicotine, but nicotine
01:17does not seem to be the fundamental cause of the atherosclerosis linked to smoking.
01:24What is the cause? Some of the almost 2,000 substances that are emitted when we light
01:33a cigarette, nicotine causes a spasm in the blood vessels, it is harmful, but it is not the
01:40fundamental cause of the damage caused by smoking.
01:44In the future, therefore, national health policies, perhaps inspired by the Greek example, will
01:50be central to the information to the consumer, which has corrective, if not dissuasive,
01:55implications. Greece has already issued a decree that says that these products have less
02:01harmful substance emissions, other countries that have not really continued on any road
02:08and still this thing depends only on the consumer.
02:12But the management and habit of smoking, to be classified and monitored, as is done
02:16with other risk factors, remains an open issue, in which the role of territorial medicine
02:21and basic doctors is strategically confirmed.
