Chris Hoy diagnosis boosts Burgess Hill testing to over 1000 men

Burgess Hill District Lions Club are helping support PSA testing in Mid Sussex on 16th November, Alan Ranger explains in detail

00:00Right, good afternoon. I'm Alan Ranger, Burgess Hill District Lions Club and I'm

00:04involved this year as I have been for the last seven odd years in prostate

00:09cancer screening for men which this year we are again holding at the Triangle

00:14Leisure Centre in Burgess Hill. This year we've set a target of a thousand men who

00:21will receive their test on the 16th of November and to date I think about 980

00:27already pre-booked so there's still a chance to pre-book if you haven't done

00:32so. There's also a chance if you're aged between 40 and 80 and male to come along

00:38on the day and we will try and fit you in because it's important to have this

00:42little blood test. After all 50% of all men, 50% of all men will have a prostate

00:49problem and therefore a lot of men don't even know about it and maybe like Chris

00:54Hoy until it's too late. So take this opportunity because the NHS do not, your

01:00doctor surgery do not routinely give PSA blood tests to men. You have to request

01:06it. So this is our seventh PSA testing event. I think in total about 4,000 men

01:13now have been tested and we hope that, well we know that 10% of all men tested

01:19who haven't had a test before, 10% will have a high reading and will need some

01:25additional investigation. Horrible thought. Women have their

01:29manograms, they have cervical spears, men have nothing. So this is your chance and

01:34that's why Burgess Hall District Lions and PCASO, I must mention them because

01:39they're the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, they actually organise it,

01:43the Lions fund it and obviously they're a trained phlebotomist doing the blood

01:47tests. You don't get members of Lions Club like me doing blood tests. So it's a

01:52proper event and it can save and well we know it will save lives. So if you get a
