Police charge 26-year-old with fatally stabbing 20-year-old in Geelong CBD

The homicide squad has charged a 26-year-old man with murder over a fatal stabbing in central Geelong over the weekend. 20-year-old Jayme Sykes died in hospital after he was injured in the early hours of Sunday morning. Today, his devastated friends and family gathered together, to pay tribute.

00:25His devastated mother released a statement today, saying,

00:32That boy's heart was as big as his smile.

00:35He definitely packed a lot of life into his 20 years.

00:38Heaven won't know what hit them.

00:40This is just an absolute tragedy and completely devastating.

01:08Police statistics show the number of serious assaults in Geelong's CBD have decreased since

01:13But local leaders say even one is too many.

01:17We do have troubled hotspots and in the CBD it's only something that needs to be tackled.

01:23The road has reopened and the police tape has been taken down, but this investigation

01:27is far from over.

01:29Police say a 26-year-old man is in custody after handing himself in this morning.

01:33Two others, who were injured in the alleged fight, will be interviewed in coming days.

01:38Late this afternoon, police charged the 26-year-old over the death of one young man who impacted

01:44countless young lives.
