00:00High in the sky, crews waterbomb the bush, practising and prepping ahead of this year's
00:08fire season.
00:09You can expect CFA ready, willing and able and en masse.
00:14More than 250 CFA volunteers gathered today on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula to take
00:19part in training drills, from pumping water between trucks to mock evacuations.
00:25We always hope that we don't have a fire season and that we're not needed, but days like today
00:29we train people up so when we are needed we can respond at a moment's notice.
00:33While there's no fire to put out today, everything's getting a test run.
00:37These portable dip tanks can hold up to 1,200 litres of water and are a vital tool in remote
00:43areas.
00:44We're running three in the state, we've got three based in the eastern half of the state.
00:48They are mobile, we can load them on a truck and move them around.
00:50Almost 30,000 volunteers are ready to tackle blazers, but numbers are down since the COVID-19
00:56pandemic.
00:57We know that climate change is impacting, we know our summers are happening sooner,
01:02quicker and there are also longer fire seasons for us that we need to deal with.
01:07So we're needing more members to join this great organisation.
01:11The CFA has declared the fire danger period will begin on Monday for parts of Victoria,
01:16including Hindmarsh, Horsham, Mildura, West Wimmera and Yariambiac, while some neighbouring
01:22areas will follow in early November.
01:24The bushfire season in Victoria's west is starting now, thanks to a dry winter and autumn.
01:30But over in the state's east, where it's been wetter, the threat should be delayed until
01:34regrowth there dries up.
01:36For all parts of Victoria, they need to be preparing for the bushfire season.
01:40By mowing lawns, cleaning out gutters and having a fire plan.
