00:00At least 17 people, nearly all of whom were women and children, were reportedly killed
00:05in an Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter.
00:21Weekend elections in Georgia could decide the future of the country and whether it ultimately
00:25joins the European Union.
00:31The head of the European Commission is expected to arrive in Serbia as part of a tour of the
00:35Balkans promoting EU enlargement.
00:45An Israeli strike on a school-sheltering displaced people in Gaza reportedly killed at least
00:4917 people, nearly all of whom were women and children, according to Palestinian medical
00:55officials.
00:57Amongst the dead were 13 children under the age of 18 and 3 women, hospital records show.
01:05The Israeli military said it targeted Hamas militants inside the school without providing
01:10evidence.
01:13Israel has carried out several strikes on school-turned-shelters in recent months, saying
01:17it precisely targets militants hiding out among civilians.
01:21These strikes often kill women and children.
01:27The strike came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israel had achieved its target
01:32of effectively dismantling Hamas and that negotiations over a ceasefire would resume
01:38in the coming days.
01:46Vice President Kamala Harris rallied in Georgia on Thursday, an important battleground state
01:50where she hopes to win over black voters.
01:53With less than two weeks until election day, the race between Harris and Trump is as tight
01:58as ever.
01:59Polls show conflicting predictions, with Harris narrowly leading some and Trump others.
02:04In her speech, Harris had harsh words for her election opponent, comparing him to the
02:09predators, fraudsters and repeat offenders she prosecuted in her early career.
02:14In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds, predators, fraudsters and repeat
02:23offenders.
02:24I took them on and I won.
02:28Well, Georgia, in 12 days, it's Donald Trump's turn.
02:38Biden's campaign won Georgia in 2020, becoming the first Democratic presidential candidate
02:43to win the southern state since Bill Clinton in 1992.
02:48Harris was joined by Bruce Springsteen and also shared the stage with former President
02:52Barack Obama for the first time in her campaign, who also did not hold back in his attacks
02:57on Trump, calling him a wannabe king and dictator.
03:02Harris' campaign is hopeful she can keep Georgia blue in 2024.
03:11Georgia is heading to the polls on Saturday in a parliamentary election many citizens
03:15believe will be the most crucial vote of their lifetimes.
03:19The election will pit a coalition of opposition parties against the ruling Georgian dream,
03:25which many fear is dragging the nation towards authoritarianism and away from the European
03:30Union.
03:31Brussels put Georgia's bid for entry to the EU on hold indefinitely in August after
03:37the ruling government passed a Russian law cracking down on freedom of speech earlier
03:42this year.
03:43Georgian Dream argue it needed to curb harmful foreign actors trying to destabilize the country.
03:49But journalists and activists say its true goal is to stigmatize them and restrict debates
03:55before the election.
03:58Many Georgians fear that if the Georgian Dream party is re-elected, hopes of joining the
04:02EU could be permanently extinguished.
04:11Bulgarians are heading to the polls on Sunday for the seventh time in three years.
04:17Bulgaria is in dire need of a period of stable government to accelerate the flow of EU funds
04:22in recovery and resilience plan payments, and to speed up the process to join the Euro.
04:28Ever since mass anti-corruption protests in 2020 toppled Bulgaria's centre-right government,
04:34a series of elections led to unstable and unsuccessful coalitions led by centrist and
04:39right-wing parties.
04:40Nikolai Denko, former Prime Minister and leader of the We Continue the Change coalition, said
04:45a series of laws relating to climate and corruption need to be passed as soon as possible and
04:50sent to the European Commission.
04:53The last elections were held in June, when turnout stood at a record low of 34%.
04:58The latest polls suggest not much will change, with the same three parties in the lead.
05:03The current coalition's GERB party, whose leader is Bulgaria's longest-serving prime
05:08minister since the fall of the Soviet Union, is expected to win the most votes.
05:13The pro-Russian right-wing Revival party is also growing, with approval for the EU reaching
05:18an all-time low in Bulgaria at 46%.
05:22All the running party leaders have held their final pitches in the lead-up to Sunday's vote.
05:36Russian forces are pushing to enter Solidovo, trying to claim control over parts of the
05:40town, Ukrainian military says, noting that on Wednesday only, Moscow attacked the town
05:4519 times, using a large number of infantry.
05:50The Institute for the Study of War confirms Russia's significant tactical advances into
05:56and around Solidovo in recent days, noting that Moscow's focus on securing Solidovo has
06:02come at an expense of Russian forces' ability to sustain a meaningful offensive drive directly
06:07on Pokrovsk, Russia's top priority in this area.
06:12Delegated footage shows that Russian forces have advanced in northeastern and eastern
06:17Solidovo towards the centre of the town.
06:19They have also pushed here, from the south.
06:22The Institute for the Study of War states that these advances may soon cause Ukrainian
06:26troops to withdraw from the area to avoid being trapped within a collapsing pocket.
06:32Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office reported that Russian soldiers killed four captured
06:37Ukrainian servicemen near Solidovo, taking prisoners during a Russian attack on 6 October.
06:43They were filmed during the interrogation and then killed, Kyiv investigators report.
06:48Solidovo is not Russia's operational objective on this part of the front, so Ukraine's decision
06:53to defend the settlement has likely fixed a relatively large contingent of Russian troops
06:59on the southern flank of Pokrovsk, which is Russia's primary and operationally meaningful
07:04objective in the area.
07:06The Institute for the Study of War assesses that Russia may well take Solidovo in the
07:11coming days, but it wouldn't mean that Pokrovsk will be captured next.
07:16In fact, the seizure of Solidovo is likely to have exhausted Russian forces and reduced
07:22their combat effectiveness if they are ordered to pivot towards Pokrovsk.
07:32After months of rumours, Auchan is seemingly set to depart from Russia as it becomes increasingly
07:38burdened by the weight of EU sanctions against Moscow.
07:42Media reports show that the French supermarket chain owned by the Moulier family narrowed
07:47down its options to two buyers and that they're in the final stages of negotiations.
07:54The retail giant's Russian subsidiary have said they will not comment on the rumours,
07:59but if rumours are true, Auchan would join the list of over 1,000 companies that curtailed
08:04operations in Russia following Moscow's full-scale invasion into Ukraine.
08:11The retail giant built up a loyal customer base after operating in Russia for more than
08:1520 years and previously refused to leave as they claimed they did not want to penalise
08:20the local community.
08:24It is said that the retailer is also looking to withdraw from Hungary, but will remain
08:28in Ukraine.
08:34President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is expected to arrive in Serbia
08:39as part of a tour of the Balkans promoting EU enlargement.
08:44Von der Leyen's expected visit to Serbia comes only a day after visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina
08:50as well as North Macedonia.
08:54Whilst in North Macedonia, von der Leyen said the country had made great progress in
08:58implementing reforms necessary to join the EU.
09:03Von der Leyen said the EU was committed to its enlargement plans and it will be the Union's
09:07top priority.
09:10The Commission President also visited a central Bosnian village after it was devastated by
09:14recent floods and landslides, saying the EU stood with the country.
09:22After the disaster claimed 27 lives, Bosnia sought EU aid and many countries sent teams
09:27to help through the EU's civil protection mechanism.
09:35During his visit to Belgrade, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland supports
09:40Serbia's inclusion into the European Union.
09:44Tusk's meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić comes ahead of Poland's presidency
09:49of the Council starting in January.
09:52The Polish Prime Minister said EU enlargement, including close relations with Serbia, will
09:57be a key focus during Poland's presidency of bloc.
10:04Tusk believes their conversation will act as an incentive to encourage cooperation between
10:21the EU and Serbia.
10:23He also acknowledged Serbia's efforts to help Ukraine despite their different stances on
10:28sanctioning Russia.
10:35President of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezzola met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgio
10:40Meloni to discuss the main issues facing Europe.
10:44The European leaders discussed topics ranging from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine
10:49to the crisis in the Middle East and the situation in Venezuela.
10:53Mezzola made an appearance on local radio following the meeting to share what had been
10:58addressed.
10:59She described how solutions to immigration issues facing Europe must be found and said
11:04neither Malta nor Italy should be made to feel alone as the management of migratory
11:09flows was a European challenge.
11:12The European Parliament head also stressed the importance of the EU continuing to call
11:16for de-escalation in the Middle East as well as continued humanitarian aid.
11:22Mezzola also said Italy's pick for the European Commission, Raffaele Fito, would do an excellent
11:27job as Commissioner and highlighted the importance of giving vice-presidency to Italy.
