00:04I want to start today by asking you a question.
00:07Have you ever felt disconnected from your purpose, or like you were struggling to make
00:12a meaningful impact?
00:15Maybe you felt like you're doing all the right things, but you're just not seeing the results
00:20you had hoped for.
00:22If that's you, and if you've ever felt that way, you're not alone.
00:28In fact, Jesus had something powerful to say about this very feeling.
00:33In the Gospel of John, Chapter 15, Jesus uses the image of a vine and branches to help us
00:40understand how we can experience true growth, joy, and a lasting impact.
00:48He's not just giving us good advice, he's showing us how to live a transformed life.
00:54So let's explore this passage together and see how it can reshape our lives.
01:01The Vine and Branches, Understanding the Basics
01:05So Jesus starts by saying, I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
01:13So picture that for a moment, a strong vine stretching out its branches with a gardener
01:19who carefully tends to each one.
01:22We are those branches, and Jesus is inviting us to connect with him deeply.
01:29Now you see, just as a branch cannot survive or bear fruit without being attached to the
01:34vine, we can't truly thrive unless we're connected to Jesus.
01:40This isn't about trying harder or doing more.
01:43It's about staying close to the source of life.
01:47Jesus even says, apart from me, you can do nothing.
01:53So think about that, nothing, not a little less or half as much, nothing.
02:01He's not exaggerating either, he's stating a fact.
02:04Our spiritual lives depend on a steady, daily connection with him.
02:10So how do we stay connected?
02:12Well, it's like maintaining any meaningful relationship.
02:16It takes time, intentionality, and communication.
02:21Prayer, reading the word, and listening for his voice are always good ways to remain in
02:28him.
02:29You see, it's less about rituals and more about relationship.
02:34When we stay connected, we start to see changes, both in us and through us.
02:41We bear fruit that makes a difference.
02:45Pruning for growth, embracing the process.
02:49You see, Jesus doesn't talk about just staying connected.
02:53He talks about pruning.
02:55Now I don't know about you, but pruning isn't exactly something I look forward to.
03:01But Jesus says, every branch that doesn't bear fruit, the father prunes so that it will
03:08be even more fruitful.
03:10Now pruning isn't pleasant, because it may look like trials or challenges, or God asking
03:16you to let go of something.
03:19But here's the thing, it's for our own good.
03:23God doesn't prune us to punish us, he prunes us to prepare us for more growth.
03:30But let's be real for just one second.
03:32Ask yourself, are there areas in your life where you feel God is cutting away the dead
03:37parts?
03:39Maybe it's a habit you need to break, or a relationship that's not leading you closer
03:44to him.
03:45Could even be a mindset that needs a little shifting.
03:49You know, the pruning process is painful, but it's also purposeful.
03:54It makes room for something better.
03:58So when we stay connected and allow God to prune us, we start bearing fruit.
04:04And I'm not talking about doing good things.
04:07This fruit looks like love, joy, peace, patience.
04:12The kind of qualities that change not only us, but the people around us.
04:17You see, Jesus says, if you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit.
04:25Now this fruit isn't something we have to force.
04:28It's a natural outcome of our connection to him.
04:32It's like the grapes that grow naturally on a healthy branch.
04:36They don't strain to grow, they just do.
04:39So check your fruit.
04:41Are you seeing more patience in your relationships?
04:45More joy even when life is hard?
04:48If not, maybe it's a sign that you need to reconnect with the vine.
04:53You know, it's not a call to guilt.
04:56It's an invitation back to the source.
04:59And Jesus doesn't stop at connection and fruit.
05:03He digs a little deeper and talks about abiding in love.
05:07He says, as the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
05:13Now remain in my love.
05:16Well, you know, this isn't a passive kind of love.
05:19Jesus isn't saying just feel good.
05:22He's inviting us to live in his love.
05:25It's like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold day.
05:29You don't just hold it, you wrap yourself in it.
05:33That's how Jesus wants us to abide in his love.
05:36And it's not about just receiving love.
05:40It's about living it out.
05:42Jesus goes on to say, my command is this, love each other as I have loved you.
05:50You know, the same sacrificial unconditional love he has shown us is what we're called
05:56to show others.
05:59Now think about that for a moment.
06:01Are you truly abiding in Jesus's love or are you just visiting it from time to time?
06:08You know, it's easy to get busy and drift away from that love, but Jesus wants us to
06:13make his love our home base, the place we return to over and over again.
06:21And you know, then Jesus makes an interesting point.
06:25He connects love with obedience.
06:27He says, if you keep my commands, you will remain in my love.
06:33I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
06:40Now let's be honest.
06:41When we hear obedience, joy is not always the first thing that comes to mind, right?
06:46But Jesus says that obeying him actually leads to complete joy.
06:51That's because living according to God's will isn't restricting, it's freeing.
06:56It aligns us with our true purpose and brings joy that circumstances can't take away.
07:03So are you currently experiencing this kind of joy?
07:08You know, if not, maybe it's just time to ask, am I really obeying what Jesus has called
07:13me to do?
07:15You know, joy often follows obedience, even when the initial steps feel hard.
07:22Friendship with Jesus is more than just a title.
07:26You know, one of the most incredible things Jesus says in this passage is that he no longer
07:32calls us servants, but friends.
07:35He says, you are my friends, if you do what I command.
07:40That's huge.
07:41I mean, it means that Jesus wants a personal, intimate relationship with us built on trust,
07:47communication, and love.
07:50And who doesn't want to have a best friend that's a God?
07:54I mean, the benefits are amazing, right?
07:57So what does that friendship with Jesus look like?
08:00It's not just about showing up to church or saying a prayer once in a while.
08:07It's about walking with him, talking with him, and involving him in your daily life.
08:13Jesus wants more than followers.
08:15He wants friends who truly know him.
08:19But Jesus always keeps it real.
08:21He tells us that following him won't always be easy.
08:26He says, if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
08:32You know, being a branch connected to Jesus sometimes means facing rejection or opposition.
08:39The world doesn't always celebrate fruitfulness.
08:42Sometimes it tries to cut it down.
08:45But here's the good news.
08:47Jesus reminds us that we have the Holy Spirit, our comforter, advocate, and guide.
08:54We are never alone in this journey, even when it feels like the world is against us.
09:00So here's the takeaway.
09:03Jesus invites us to stay connected, abide in love, and live fruitful lives.
09:09It's not a one-time decision, but a daily choice.
09:14It's also a choice that leads to real transformation, deep joy, and a life that truly matters.
09:22So as you leave here today, I'd like you to ask yourself, are you truly connected to the
09:28vine or are you trying to do life on your own?
09:33Are you allowing God to prune you even when it's uncomfortable?
09:39And is your life bearing the kind of fruit that points others to Jesus?
09:44Remember, being a branch connected to the true vine isn't just about surviving.
09:51It's about thriving.
09:53It's about experiencing a joy that doesn't fade and a love that never fails.
09:59Let's commit today to stay connected to Jesus, not just for a moment, but for a lifetime.
