00:00An opposition MP has suggested that the government rename parts of the South China Sea that fall
00:07within Malaysia's maritime borders to fend off territorial claims by foreign countries.
00:13Mumtaz Nawi mooted the idea in view of the ongoing dispute with Beijing over the South
00:17China Sea and having regard to the fact that Malaysia would take over as chair of the ASEAN
00:22Regional Grouping next year.
00:25Mumtaz said several other countries in the region had already done so to reflect their
00:30sovereignty over other parts of the vast sea.
00:34She said Malaysia should emulate the Philippines, which calls its territorial waters the West
00:38Philippine Sea, Indonesia, which has named their portion the North Natuna Sea, and Vietnam,
00:44the East Sea.
00:46She said the sea should be renamed Laut Asiatinggara or Laut Melayu or any other name for Malaysia
00:52to stake its claim so that no confusion arises from its present name.
