Platypus spotting along the Macdonald River

Students from Bendemeer Public School spent time with the University of NSW's leading platypus expert Dr Gilad Bino along the Macdonald River learning about one of our most elusive native animals. Video by Peter Hardin, October 22, 2024.

00:09If you were a platypus and you wanted to build a burrow, where would you build it?

00:14In the sand?

00:15Yeah, point.

00:16Where do you reckon is like the best spot for like a nice, cool, stable...

00:20Yeah, yeah, just point, just point.

00:22Point, point, point, point, point.

00:25Those trees, look at over there, look how like nice, high, stable banks you've got over there as well, right?

00:32So when you're looking at the river, it's quite easy to understand what platypuses need and what's like a great habitat.

00:41So like in there, over there, those are really important areas to protect when we're thinking about protecting our platypuses and our waterways.

00:51And you have to be very quiet. And what's the best time of seeing a platypus?
