ACT Labor wins seventh consecutive term in government

Andrew Barr's Labor party has been returned for an historic seventh term in government in the act. The election also saw the return of independents to the territory's parliament.

00:00There was a fair amount of optimism from the Canberra Liberals early in the evening, but

00:05as the night wore on, things went Labor's way.

00:09The party retaining 10 of its seats in the 25-member Legislative Assembly.

00:14Despite Greens Ministers Rebecca Vazirotti and Emma Davidson losing their seats, the

00:20Greens were able to hang on to some seats, including that of leader Shane Rattenbury,

00:24and independents were elected, including Tom Emerson, the son of former Labor Federal

00:30politician Craig Emerson, and Fiona Carrick, the former head of the Woden Valley Community

00:35Council, opening the way to Labor to form a coalition government.

00:39There's a little bit of counting to go, but it does look that the crossbench will be five,

00:47and five people who hold progressive values, and whose natural partner would be a Labor

00:54government.

00:55They're a few political duos that I think that have forged and maintained a relationship

01:02as long as Andrew and Shane, and they certainly have cemented themselves in the history books

01:10as they embark perhaps on another coalition government.

01:15The election count will continue over the coming days, and some of the results could

01:19change, but in the meantime there'll be some soul-searching from the Canberra Liberals

01:24about why they're now facing a seventh term in opposition.
