It has been seven years since rank-and-file members of Tasmania’s Labor party have had the chance to share their views at a state conference. After five election losses in a row and years in administration for hyper factionalism, the party met today hoping to reshape itself as a credible alternative government.

00:02Absent since 2019, Labor's holding a state conference once more.
00:07When I've heard people talking about the seven year itch,
00:10I always thought that was about couples growing apart.
00:13But you've decided to get back together.
00:15Today rank and file members, unionists, party elders and MPs met
00:20as the party plots its way out of the political wilderness.
00:24A lot of people say that sometimes MPs can be disconnected
00:29so this is a very important part of connecting with the wider party.
00:34A lot has happened since the last state Labor conference in 2019.
00:38The 2021 election was marred by factionalism,
00:42with Dean Winter's candidacy blocked initially
00:44and the party president, Ben McGregor, stepping down as a candidate.
00:48Rebecca White gave up the leadership following the loss,
00:51only to become leader again after David O'Byrne resigned
00:55in the wake of sexual harassment claims.
00:57Former Senators Doug Cameron and Nick Sherry were appointed as administrators in 2022,
01:02but Labor also lost the 2024 election.
01:07Dean Winter then led the party to its fifth straight election defeat,
01:11having triggered the snap poll with a no confidence motion in the Premier.
01:16Josh Willey is looking to the achievements of other Labor state governments.
01:19They invest in people, they expand opportunity and they build for the future.
01:24And that's what we should be doing here.
01:26And he's railing against job losses and course cuts at TAS TAFE.
01:30We are not going to stand for $45 million worth of cuts for TAFE to be further eroded.
01:37TAS TAFE is not just an educational institution, it is a pillar of our community.
01:42Having planted their flag in supporting salmon, greyhound racing and a new stadium,
01:47attendees were greeted by protesters, urging them to swim in another direction.
01:53Get salmon farming out of our waterways, the science is clear.
01:57Among the motions passed today were ones calling on Labor to back a pause
02:01on short-stay accommodation permits and offer support to the Liberty Bell Bay smelter and its workers.
