00:00It was an emotive and combative debate that spilled beyond Parliament's Upper House
00:06Chamber.
00:07I don't appreciate walking out of this place during my dinner break and being told that
00:13I hope you will not vote in favour of killing innocent children.
00:18Claims of harassment from both sides of the debate, as Liberal MP Ben Hood attempted to
00:23wind back SA's abortion laws under his proposed amendments, people wanting to terminate their
00:29pregnancy after 28 weeks would be required to deliver their baby alive.
00:34There have been death threats, there have been a litany of false claims made against
00:39me personally.
00:40And after almost three hours of debate, it was defeated by the narrowest of margins.
00:44There have been nine ayes and ten no's, the bill will not be read a second time.
00:50But for a few minutes that result was in serious jeopardy after a surprise decision by Liberal
00:56MP Jing Li.
00:57This is an absolute disgrace.
01:00Jing Li, who supported the changes, had agreed to pair with fellow Liberal MP Michelle Lensink
01:05who opposed the legislation.
01:07Ms Lensink is on sick leave receiving treatment for breast cancer.
01:11Under that arrangement, Jing Li would have abstained from voting, meaning the outcome
01:15wouldn't have been impacted by Ms Lensink's absence.
01:19But just before ten last night, as the final speeches were underway, Ms Li pulled out of
01:24the deal.
01:25I think it's a new level of political bastardry.
01:28That potentially would have tied the result, with the casting vote falling to Upper House
01:33President Terry Stephens, whose support would have carried the bill.
01:36Michelle Lensink then turned to One Nation MP Sarah Game as a second pairing option.
01:42But after initially believing another deal had been struck, Ms Game decided to vote in
01:47favour of the law change.
01:49You cannot put that on somebody else to be the deciding vote in a conscience vote.
01:54By this stage, Michelle Lensink had booked an Uber and was on her way to Parliament with
01:58her eight-year-old son to vote in person.
02:01And then I start getting more texts and phone calls from other colleagues saying no it's
02:05not, no it's not.
02:06In the end, Dennis Hood agreed to pair with me.
02:09I couldn't in good conscience go against the commitment I'd made to her, break that and
02:14have her come in here at ten o'clock at night in the condition she's in.
02:17While this attempt to change SA's abortion laws may have failed, it remains a contentious
02:23issue.
02:24And no doubt one that will be debated in the lead up to next month's by-election for the
02:28seat of black, and in the state election campaign beyond that.
