Welcome to the fifty-sixth episode of the Minutes Mastery series by Triumph through Training Pvt. Ltd. (3T)! In this episode, Dr. Veena K. Arora explores the timeless method of Socratic Questioning, pioneered by the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates.

Socratic questioning is a powerful tool for fostering deeper thinking by asking thoughtful, probing questions rather than providing direct answers. As Socrates famously said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” This method pushes individuals to examine their assumptions, think critically, and engage in meaningful discussions.

Dr. Arora shares how Socratic questioning is used in Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) to help teachers encourage students to ask deeper, more meaningful questions that lead to critical thinking and better learning outcomes. For professionals, Socratic questioning plays a vital role in Management Development Programs (MDPs) by challenging teams to think beyond the obvious, fostering innovation and collaborative problem-solving.

Socratic questioning helps leaders uncover blind spots and encourages continuous improvement. By simply asking, “Why do we do it this way?” or “How can we improve this process?” managers can inspire their teams to think creatively and find better solutions.

We acknowledge Socrates for his contribution to the art of questioning, which remains relevant in both educational and business settings today.

00:00Welcome to minutes mastery series by 3T today we are going to discuss Socratic
00:15questioning which helps transform our thinking by asking the right questions.
00:21Socratic questioning was pioneered by ancient Greek philosopher Socrates who
00:28believed that the path to true knowledge lies in questioning everything. I was
00:33listening to Mrs. Indira Nooyi once and in her speech she said when we are young
00:40we ask a lot of questions like why is the sky so blue? Why are the birds flying
00:46so high? But then as we grow older we lose our curiosity and we start
00:53stagnating. Now Socrates said the only true wisdom is in knowing you know
01:00nothing. We people as trainers when we conduct FTPs that is faculty development
01:07programs for teachers of schools colleges and universities we brought
01:12them to ask Socratic questions from students. It not only encourages active
01:18engagement with learning but it also develops the critical thinking skills
01:23helping students grasp concepts at a more meaningful level. Instead of simply
01:28memorizing facts it pushes students to ask deeper questions like why did this
01:34event happen in history or what are the consequences of the Cobra effect? While
01:41conducting MDPs for business professionals for working professionals
01:45we shared that this method is quite powerful. For instance in business
01:50settings it challenges teams to think beyond the obvious. When team members ask
01:57questions like what assumptions are we making or what alternatives have we not
02:03considered to solve this problem it opens up the space for more thoughtful
02:09decision-making and it drives creativity and innovation. So overall in any
02:15kind of management whether of schools colleges universities or businesses
02:21Socratic questioning is the key to uncovering blind spots and encouraging
02:26collaborative problem-solving. Professionals who ask why do we do it
02:32this way or how can we improve this process further foster an environment of
02:38continuous improvement and open dialogue. Socrates was considered a genius not
02:45because he had all the answers but because he questioned everything and
02:50therefore anyone who asks questions whether students or professionals it's
02:56alright answer them try to find out the solutions there are no dumb questions
03:02only dumb teachers or leaders. So the next time you face a challenge ask more
03:10questions because that's where true learning begins. Join us on Minutes
03:18Mastery again tomorrow to learn more and grow more
