A family is mourning today after a 37-year-old was killed in an alleged domestic violence stabbing in Darwin last night. The victim was from the Tiwi Islands and a Sistagirl, a term used to describe gender diverse First Nations people. They are referred to throughout this story with she/they pronouns and their name and image cannot be used for cultural reasons.

00:25The 34-year-old man, the victim's uncle, has been arrested facing murder charges.

00:51She said personally it was really beautiful, it was very nice, lovely, she had everything
00:58going for her, it's just sad that these things happened but she was very loved in the community.
01:06She says gender diverse people are a minority in their own community and that more should
01:11be done to protect them.
01:13At the end of the day we are human beings and we deserve to be treated as human beings,
01:20as Tiwi people, as Yolngu people, as Aboriginal people as well.
01:25Tragedy has struck this community several times this year.
01:29These flowers laid for a woman allegedly murdered by her partner in August.
01:34Today's crime scene is in the same complex.
01:38Yet another life lost in a losing battle against domestic violence.
