Man arrested 42-year-old woman found dead in remote community

Police in the Northern Territory are treating the death of a 42-year-old Lajamanu woman as a domestic violence homicide. It's the seventh alleged domestic violence death in the Northern Territory since June.

00:00Tragedy strikes once again. A mother's life taken, allegedly at the hands of her partner,

00:09who she'd been with for 20 years.

00:11Just after 6pm yesterday, the Lajamanu Clinic contacted the Northern Territory Police to

00:15advise that a 42-year-old female was at the clinic and had sustained serious injuries.

00:22Northern Territory Police responded and unfortunately the woman died.

00:26She was stabbed, the community then turning on the man, leaving him with minor injuries.

00:32It's yet another life lost, the third this month.

00:37We wonder why we have young people on our streets who are committing crime and terrorising

00:42the community at times. Part of that has to be linked back to domestic violence.

00:48NT Police responded to between 60 and 80 incidents of domestic violence yesterday and they'll

00:54do the same again today. There have been seven deaths since June, all indigenous and

01:00all under 50 years old.

01:03Each of these has involved alcohol as a contributing factor in some way. Each of these has perpetrated

01:10tragedy and trauma into the families and communities of those that have been impacted.

01:15But the calls for needs-based funding to tackle the scourge is seemingly falling on deaf ears.

01:21The money needs to be on the front line. It needs to be supporting women's shelters

01:26across the Northern Territory, ensuring that remote Territorians have access to safe houses,

01:32that there is education available, that there is emergency assistance available.

01:37The CLP government says $180 million will be invested into DV prevention, but that it

01:43needs more from the Commonwealth. The federal government says the NT already receive more

01:48than their share, and so the crisis continues.
