We're joined now by another member of the New England Patriots, Devon Godchow, Patriots defensive lineman, joins us here.
00:06
He's brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh, and by Drains by James,
00:11
Eastern Mass' top provider of drain and sewer cleaning and repair.
00:15
Devon Godchow, how are we doing this week?
00:17
Doing good, how about you, sir?
00:19
We're doing well. We know it was another tough result for you guys yesterday, 1-4 now.
00:25
We heard Jarrod Mayo come out after the game and say defense did their job, special teams did their job.
00:30
We need a little more out of the offense.
00:32
Would you agree with that assessment?
00:35
I mean, as the head coach said, I mean, yeah, I definitely agree with it.
00:41
You know, I thought the defense probably could have held the last drive, you know, from the touchdown.
00:45
It was tough, you know, it was a few, I think, 17 plays.
00:49
Special teams have been doing good for, like, the last three weeks, probably the beginning of the season.
00:54
Yeah, defense probably just, like, if we can, like, clean up, like, the last drive.
00:59
But we were able to get the ball back to the offense.
01:01
You know, we stopped them in a four-minute situation.
01:03
We were able to get the ball back to them and, you know, got some points on the board.
01:07
Just, you know, got to find a way to finish these games, man, because, you know, same results each and every week.
01:12
You know, so close, but, you know, at the end of the day, it was awesome.
01:15
You know, last week you were telling us how you thought some of the guys on defense were playing a little selfishly.
01:22
That obviously got addressed.
01:23
Do you feel like it was different and changes were made for yesterday?
01:27
Yeah, it was big, big changes, big results.
01:30
You know, we played as good defense yesterday, but not good enough to win.
01:33
You know, we still came up short.
01:35
But, yeah, definitely, you know, a lot of guys was locked in, doing their part.
01:39
But we contained the quarterback pretty good.
01:41
You know, that was a really good game plan.
01:43
We looked at quarterbacking early.
01:45
Sunday, we cut down the passing game for the most part.
01:47
You know, got some little leakage in the run game, you know,
01:49
but at the end of the day, they only scored 15 points.
01:51
So that's the angle, like, you know, they was running the ball, you know, sometimes successfully.
01:55
But that's the angle, like, they put up 40 points.
01:57
They put up 15 points.
01:59
Why do you think the message landed this week when it didn't in the past?
02:02
Were there any extra steps you took to make sure that message landed this week?
02:08
Yeah, just kind of like being a voice.
02:10
You know, I'm normally, you know, not like a big speaker.
02:12
I'm normally, like, you know, lead more with my actions.
02:15
But I think just kind of like stepping up and just kind of speaking to the team
02:18
and just, you know, just kind of, you know, thinking of some things we can get right.
02:21
Just trying to, you know, win the division game,
02:23
which was yesterday against Miami that we fell short on.
02:25
But just, you know, just taking accountability, you know.
02:28
We all, you know, we all just, you know, need to do more and do better, you know,
02:31
because, you know, we're not getting the results that, you know, we're like, you know.
02:34
So I guess it's just going to start another week of preparation and, you know,
02:38
start on what's going to start today with, you know, we're doing the field
02:42
and getting better from it and, you know, starting back on Wednesday,
02:45
getting ready for Houston, who's, you know, red hot right now.
02:48
Yeah, take it on the Houston Texans next week.
02:51
But first, just with the Miami game, did you guys feel as though, you know, you'd made –
02:57
it seemed like you stopped them passing the ball.
03:00
You even had a great pass deflection in there.
03:02
But then they decided to run it.
03:04
And I'm with you.
03:05
They didn't score a ton of points.
03:06
But was there, you know, more kind of urgency to get off the field considering, you know,
03:12
they were able to still run for close to 200 yards on the ground?
03:16
Yeah.
03:17
Well, I mean, you know, they schedule stuff up pretty good.
03:21
You know, it's really all late.
03:23
Coach Todd does run the ball.
03:24
The passing was pretty much taken away.
03:26
You know, make no excuse about it.
03:27
You know, they had a – you know, they came in and, you know,
03:30
pretty much the game was controlled by us all four quarters.
03:33
You take the last, I guess, I think like 45 minutes of the fourth quarter away
03:37
and, you know, I think we're – you know, it's a different result.
03:39
You know, we just got to find a way to finish the game.
03:42
Like I said, you know, we started off, you know, what the offense gave us 10 points.
03:45
We started off, you know, dominating the game on defense.
03:47
And, you know, I feel like we didn't have for the most of four quarters
03:50
until like the last four minutes of the game.
03:52
And, you know, they were able to sneak in a fullback dive and score.
03:56
Yeah, I mean, there's really no excuse for it.
04:00
You know, they scored.
04:02
We lost the game.
04:03
That's really all I can put it.
04:05
You took 12 penalties as a team for 105 yards, and not to make excuses,
04:09
but some of those penalties just didn't seem like great calls.
04:12
And I'm always curious with defensive players what you guys are taught
04:16
when it comes to hitting the quarterback.
04:18
Because, you know, you can't hit them high.
04:20
You can't hit them low.
04:21
You can't land on them.
04:22
Like how do you still get the quarterback down
04:24
while also avoiding all of those things?
04:30
You know, it's tough.
04:33
Quarterback stuff is always tough because, you know,
04:36
you think you're doing it right, but then you're doing it wrong.
04:39
Pull the quarterback down to the ground,
04:40
got to make sure there's no body weight on him,
04:42
but you kind of risk an injury of yourself,
04:44
tweaking the knee the wrong way, you know, trying to twist off a sack.
04:47
You know, so it's kind of tough, man.
04:48
Those rules are, you know, I'll leave those rules to the NFL to get fixed
04:54
because they're kind of tough, especially when you got a 300-pounder
04:56
coming in to get a sack.
04:58
You know, you expect this guy not to, you know,
05:00
get his body going down.
05:01
It's tough, you know, so hopefully we can get those rules fixed.
05:05
Talking to Patriots defensive lineman Devon Godchow
05:07
here on Patriots Monday, Jones and Keefe,
05:09
live at Gillette Stadium here on WEI.
05:12
There was a report last week of the locker room teetering on a mutiny.
05:16
A number of your teammates have shot that down.
05:18
I don't know how you feel about that report.
05:20
Yeah, I don't know where that comes from.
05:22
That's false.
05:23
Okay, so it's false.
05:24
So how would you describe the mood in the locker room right now?
05:29
You know, you're going to be disappointed after a loss.
05:31
But, I mean, it's what you're going to do after.
05:33
You know, I thought we took a better step forward from last week's
05:37
half-time game, you know, a better step with Miami.
05:39
And it's just got to get better and better.
05:41
You know, we're not good enough to, you know,
05:44
you're never good enough to relax.
05:46
But we're definitely not good enough to just relax and just say, you know,
05:49
we got all the answers and stuff like that, you know.
05:51
We got to get better, you know.
05:52
And it starts to impact you.
05:54
It starts to, you know, taking accountability, you know,
05:56
being honest with yourself, looking yourself in the mirror.
05:59
And you just tell yourself what you can get better on, you know.
06:02
I know this is a good football team, you know,
06:04
but like I said, we just don't have the results to show that, you know.
06:07
So it's easy for me to sit up here and say that.
06:09
But, you know, we don't really have no actions to put towards me saying that,
06:12
you know.
06:13
So it's frustrating for us.
06:14
But, you know, the work you put in, you know, you're going to pay off.
06:16
But you're just not seeing those results right now.
06:19
I'm not sure if you guys have had your squad meeting yet.
06:21
But Gerard Mayo said today he was going to address the team in a squad meeting.
06:25
As it relates to the quarterback, would you welcome a change at quarterback?
06:30
That's whatever the coaches, you know, LA Wolf and those guys decide.
06:36
You know, those guys get paid way more than my pay grade.
06:38
So that's those guys' decisions, you know.
06:41
They make those decisions.
06:42
Whoever's at the quarterback, we're going to roll with them.
06:44
Whether it's Jacoby or Drake, you know.
06:46
Whoever's there, we're going to roll with them as our quarterback.
06:49
So it really doesn't matter.
06:50
Gerard's going to make that decision.
06:52
I don't know, you know.
06:54
He's going to make that as soon as he's ready, you know.
06:56
So that's a question for Gerard for sure.
07:00
Regardless of what the decision is, what has Drake May have been like going up
07:04
against him in practice?
07:05
I know he's been running with the ones a little bit,
07:07
but also running some of the scout team stuff against you guys.
07:10
So how has he looked over the last month at practice?
07:13
You know, when you have a rookie like that, you know,
07:15
you just want him to continue to grow and get better and learn, you know,
07:19
because some of the great quarterbacks have started their rookie year.
07:24
So when you have a guy like that behind Jacoby,
07:27
behind our starting quarterback,
07:29
you just want him to keep learning and have a positive attitude, you know.
07:32
Just keep coming to work each and every day.
07:34
And the results will come.
07:35
The results will show.
07:36
As long as you put the work in and put the effort in, the results will come.
07:38
So you just kind of want to see him keep that positive level head
07:41
and stay humble and just continue to be a learner and be a great follower.
07:47
And the results will come.
07:48
I'm trying to make out.
07:50
I can hear some music going on in the back.
07:52
What are you guys listening to?
07:53
I don't know.
07:55
I'm in the training room right now listening to like a little jam right now
07:57
trying to get the positive vibes going around.
07:59
Nice.
08:00
Who is in charge?
08:01
Who gets to be in charge of the music in the locker room?
08:04
It's pretty much, you know, whoever wants to be in charge.
08:08
You know, probably not a rookie,
08:09
but it's pretty much a one-and-an-older veteran guy.
08:11
Sometimes I play music.
08:12
Sometimes Jawan Bentley.
08:14
You know, it just depends, you know.
08:16
We've got different guys.
08:17
We're building an ox every now and then.
08:20
Okay.
08:21
Jawan Godchow, Patriots defensive lineman, joins us here on a Patriots Monday.
08:24
Best of luck this week against the Texans, and we'll talk to you soon.
08:27
Thank you so much.
08:28
All right, Jawan Godchow.
08:31
He's brought to you by Verizon, the official 5G network of the New England Patriots.
08:35
You were in charge of some music at home, right?
08:36
I was not.
08:37
No, I tried to.
08:38
Sometimes.
08:39
We got pushed back pretty quickly.
08:41
It's swiftly.
08:42
Yeah, it was like sneak in a song.
08:43
It was all, like, hate breed and, like, God of Lamb or Lamb of God.
08:46
I mean, it was, like, all insane stuff, and nobody liked that.
08:49
I thought that would be what the team would want to get ready.
08:51
They're like, we're not playing this.
08:52
No, we're not.
08:53
This is not what we're doing here today.
08:54
Two, three songs max, and then we're done.
