100 AFL hopefuls audition for draft night

The country's newest crop of AFL talent has gathered in Melbourne for a three-day testing event ahead of the men's and women's drafts later in the year. Around 100 boys and girls are being put through their paces in the hope they'll perform well enough to have their name called out on draft night. Script: Just six days on from the grand Final, all eyes are on the future. The best young talent from around the country doing, what they can to impress at the draft combine. And they're not shy about talking up their credentials. “I think I really thrive on how hard I work” “I feel like one of my strengths is my speed.” “I think I base my game and play like Zak butters Conor Rozee and Chad Earner sort of a mix of the three.” Sophie McKay, daughter of Carlton premiership player Andrew McKay, is part of the new generation of girls who grew up playing the game. “I think it does put a bit of pressure on but it's honestly it is just exciting, it means the AFLW is going to be played pretty fast and a brand of footy that everyone's wanted it to turn into for a while.” Lifelong tigers fan, midfielder Harvey Langford is hoping to be in yellow and black next year. “anywhere I go would be a dream obviously but obviously going for Richmond it would be amazing.” Richmond currently holds the number one pick in the men's draft after finishing on the bottom of the ladder this year. But the player favoured to be picked first Levi Ashcroft is likely be drafted to the premiers Brisbane under the father son rule. The northern clubs also have priority over players that come through their academies. The system is designed to foster talent in non-traditional AFL states. But lack of adequate compensation is a sore point within the league. “It's fair to say that our club is sick and tired of meekly accepting this, it's rubbish.” New rules next year will see clubs offered more in return for the father/son or academy players they miss out on.
