00:00Youth crime has always been a concern for us, always has been, always will be.

00:04Youth crime is back on the national radar, with new data showing a 6% spike in the number of offenders aged as young as 10 to 17,

00:12caught up in police proceedings over the past 12 months.

00:16This marks the first increase in youth offending rates in 15 years.

00:21The surge in youth crime has hit every state and territory.

00:26The ACT reported a whopping 49% rise in youth offenders, a dramatic leap from its previous low in 2022.

00:34In New South Wales, youth offenders rose by 2% as fair evasion and acts of violence topped the list of offences.

00:43Victoria, however, saw the sharpest rise, with youth crime skyrocketing by 16%.

00:50Over a quarter of the state's young offenders were involved in violent crimes,

00:54with acts intended to cause injury making up a significant chunk of offences.

00:59The Northern Territory, already vowing tough crackdowns on youth crime,

01:03faced a staggering 30% increase in robbery offences among young offenders that sent shockwaves through local communities.

01:11The Mayor certainly put forward that it was an issue of youth crime, as well as issues related to alcohol.

01:18But also there was issues related to employment and opportunity,

01:23issues that were about service delivery and service hubs and about investment in communities.
