Number of teenage offenders has increased significantly across Australia, data shows

New data out this morning shows more than half of Australia's states and territories have recorded significant increases in offending by people under 17-years-old.

00:00 This data has come from the Bureau of Statistics and it has shown that there was just over

00:07 48,000 offending in the age group between 10 and 17 in a 12 month period, which is a

00:15 6% increase on the 2021-22 numbers.

00:20 The most common offending that we have seen in that age bracket is acts intended to cause

00:26 injury and more than two thirds of the offending have been males.

00:32 We saw the most amount of offending in Queensland, there were just under 11,000 cases in that

00:37 12 month period.

00:39 That too was a 6% increase.

00:41 There have been bigger increases in Victoria and Tasmania, 16% in Victoria, 14% in Victoria.

00:52 In the ACT in South Australia there was also a jump of 11%.

00:56 In the ACT the youth crime rates are actually higher than the crime rates of all ages, but

01:03 the numbers there are pretty small.

01:06 There was 109 cases of youth crime in that 12 month period.

01:11 There's also been a fair bit of repeat offending.

01:14 Most states and territories have seen that number around 31 to 37%, but it was highest

01:21 in the Northern Territory, 53% of youth offending more than once.

01:27 Although youth crime has gone up longer, the use of illicit drugs amongst youth has declined

01:34 and has done so for the eighth consecutive year.
