00:04Victoria has unveiled a sweeping crackdown on youth crime,

00:09with new laws allowing violent child offenders to face adult jail sentences,

00:14including life imprisonment.

00:17The courts will treat children for these crimes like adults,

00:21where jail will be more likely and sentences will be longer.

00:25The adult time for violent crime reforms will move offenders aged 14 and over

00:31who commit serious crimes such as aggravated home invasion,

00:35carjacking and armed robbery from the Children's Court to the County Court.

00:45The maximum jail term will rise from three years to 25 years,

00:50with life possible for the worst offences.

00:52Premier Jacinta Allen said the change would deliver real consequences for young offenders.

00:59It follows a spike in youth violence across Melbourne,

01:02where children now make up nearly 13% of all offenders

01:06and are responsible for most aggravated robberies and burglaries.
