Storm surge spilling into Florida as Hurricane Helene looms

AccuWeather Correspondent Leslie Hudson reports on storm surge flooding already spilling into the streets of Treasure Island, Florida. Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall tonight.

00:00So we're in Treasure Island, which is still Hillsborough County, and the storm surge has already started to come in. You can see here

00:06It's not too bad. This is you know, maybe six eight inches of standing water of just the very beginnings

00:11Of course, I'm gonna I would take you here and just show you some things you can see the road

00:15I completely impassable in this area that looks like a local maybe maybe he's leaving for the day. I'm not sure

00:21But definitely there is a residents that do not leave this area

00:25We were talking to several people earlier today and a lot of people do right out the storm. We are right on the water

00:31I just passed where that that that woman is is getting into her car

00:37There is the Tampa Bay the Bay there

00:40So we are in an area that is expected to get a five to eight foot storm surge on later today

00:46So the beginnings now the low tide was around 1230 today

00:51So we're expecting though, of course the water to continue to rise throughout the day the height of the stir of the high tide here

00:57We'll be 11 o'clock tonight. So that's when they are most concerned with the rise of the waters

01:02But we talked to some folks here that have weathered a couple of hurricanes and they did decide to stay

01:07Here's what one of them had to say

01:10The second time we stayed in a storm and it like is it always generally floods out here and we live on stilts

01:15And so we flood downstairs, but we know that living on the beach. That's gonna be the way it is

01:20We're a little concerned about later. So we're trying to decide whether we're leaving or not leaving

01:29So a lot of people again trying to make that judgment call a lot of folks have told me that it is common to lose

01:35Power here. Of course, I know Wi-Fi

01:37So the comforts that most people are enjoy when you're in a hurricane will not be the case here in a few hours
