More and more Sudanese end up in Calais after fleeing violence in their home country

00:00Calais. Port City, northern France.

00:03Nowadays, better known for camps like this than for its beachfront sites.

00:08New home for a thousand migrants of various nationalities.

00:12But today, they're mostly migrants from Sudan,

00:15fleeing violence in their home country.

00:17And many of them are minors,

00:19with one objective, to go to the UK.

00:22Like Hassan, 16 years old.

00:24His journey from Sudan to France took him three months.

00:28We tried to go to England by climbing on trucks,

00:32but the police stop us.

00:34Sometimes they beat us too.

00:37Teenagers like Hassan are increasingly coming to Europe.

00:41At this special day care for Doctors Without Borders,

00:44sometimes 90% of the visitors are from Sudan.

00:52They often encounter violence in Calais,

00:54also on the beach when they want to cross the channel by boat.

00:57If they trust us, they will tell us what happened

00:59during the journey from Sudan to Calais.

01:06In Sudan, more than 10 million people have fled because of the war.

01:10About 8 million of them went mainly to Egypt and Chad.

01:14So far this year, more than 4,000 Sudanese

01:17have applied for asylum in the European Union.
