EU 'prepared to compromise on youth mobility scheme with UK' to get deal over the line

00:04The EU is reportedly considering a youth mobility deal with the UK,

00:08meaning that 18 to 30-year-old Brits would be allowed to travel

00:10around Europe for up to four years.

00:12The same would apply for young Europeans who want to come to the UK.

00:16The EU is also offering to lower the number of years

00:19adults under the age of 30 can remain in the UK,

00:21from four years to two or three.

00:23This is to make the deal more attractive to Prime Minister Keir Starmer,

00:26who is facing increased pressure to lower migration levels.

00:29The plan also proposed British universities

00:32stop charging Europeans higher international student fees.

00:35According to reports by the Eye,

00:37it could become a concrete offer from Brussels in as soon as two months.

00:40However, it seems unlikely Starmer is going to be sold on the deal.

00:44He recently vowed to reduce migration levels

00:46and Britain's dependency on foreign workers.

00:49The PM has also repeatedly said that he has no plans to agree

00:52to a youth mobility scheme with the EU,

00:54and stressed there would be no return to free movement under his leadership.

00:58But apparently EU negotiators are hopeful.

01:03with a youth mobility deal being a key EU ask in Brexit reset negotiations.

01:08Given that 75% of 18 to 24-year-olds voted remain in the Brexit referendum,

01:13it's likely young people will very much hope that this deal goes through.
