UK looks to rebuild relations with Europe under new leadership

Eight years after Britain voted to leave the EU, young Europeans living in London are ready for change.

00:00Brits at home are listening intently to their new government,

00:05hearing a Labour leader looking to rejuvenate and rebuild relations with Europe.

00:11We think we can get a better deal than the botched deal that Boris Johnson brought home,

00:15and we will work on that, understanding the work that needs to be done and the nature of the challenge.

00:22The largest proportion of Europeans living in London are young adults.

00:26There's cautious hope regarding Keir Starmer's approach to the current challenges.

00:31Many are eager to see the reinstatement of freedom of movement.

00:36Yeah, I'm slightly more optimistic than I would be with the Tories.

00:39There are so many pros and cons about it, but the first thing that we felt was relief.

00:45I feel the fact that we are divided in a certain sense.

00:50In the past it's very different because obviously we are all together,

00:55and so now in a certain sense I feel that it's like something apart.

01:00When it comes to politics in Britain, it's been a long few years, and Brexit has posed many challenges.

01:06But with Labour now in power, the UK hopes to reset its relationship with Europe.

01:10Will this approach lead to better engagement and improved trade ties?

01:16There is this very positive mood music.

01:18Professor Jonathan Portis is a leading expert in UK and EU relations.

01:24If there are early positive agreements, you could see that generating a dynamic,

01:29a political and economic dynamic, where there's pressure on both sides to go further and faster,

01:34and you could actually see very real change.

01:37But at the moment I think we genuinely don't know,

01:39and it will also depend, frankly, on wider geopolitical pressures and considerations.

01:44Only time will tell if Labour's efforts will lead to stronger ties between the UK and Europe.

01:50But with much hanging in the balance, a lot will depend on the outcome of the American presidential election.
