The UK is prepared to align even more closely with the EU single market if the move is in the national interest, Sir Keir Starmer has said.The Prime Minister insisted Britain should “go further” in strengthening post-Brexit ties with Brussels following a trade deal agreed earlier this year.

00:00I've always been clear that we need a closer relationship with the EU that is
00:10in our national interest and we've taken important steps towards that with the
00:16EU-UK reset and it is a reset. Relations between the UK and the EU are in the
00:23best position they've been for 10 years. We've already taken steps on food and
00:27agriculture to align with the single market, that's the sovereign decision
00:32that we have taken. I think we should get closer and if it's in our national
00:39interest, in our interest, to have even closer alignment with the single market
00:44then we should consider that. We should go that far. We're already aligning on
00:48energy, reconnecting to energy in Europe, on emissions but I think the single
00:54market further alignment. As I say, if it's in our interest to do so, we should take that step.
