South East Queensland’s rapid population growth applies pressure on housing affordability

South East Queensland's population could reach 4.5 million by the time it hosts the Olympics and 5 million by 2036, according to a new report. The region's rapid growth is making finding a place to live even more difficult, forcing some to move further out and others onto the streets.

00:07Four years ago the McNichols left Brisbane for a property near Ipswich.

00:12There's a lot of people I talk to who I work with who have thought the same.

00:15They've really been looking for that tree change.

00:17And they're not alone.

00:19In the last five years nearly 52,000 new residents have called Ipswich home,

00:24according to a KPMG report.

00:26It says South East Queensland's population growth is far outstripping the national average

00:32and it forecasts the region could add a million residents over the next decade.

00:37Single mum Logan Bell says she's already squeezed out of the market.

00:41I'm literally making as much money as I can in my circumstance

00:45and I still was not able to secure any housing.

00:49She's been homeless, in emergency accommodation and slept on couches.

00:54I now do have housing and we're in a more stable position now.

00:59But I don't really know how long that will be for.

01:02Welfare services say low income families can't afford to live in South East Queensland.

01:08Logan City Council over the last four and a half years has seen a 69% increase in the median rental in Logan.

01:14They're making impossible decisions between paying the rent, filling the car up with petrol

01:19and taking their kids to the doctor.

01:21This Christmas the social services wish list is once again much more social housing

01:26and a significant lift in income support payments.

01:29It's that low income tax, significant limit, no rent and wash my rent.
