Glasgow Food and Drink’s scene: Duke Umbrella gastro pub

We speak to Peter Milne from the Duke’s Umbrella on running a gastro pub on Argyle Street.

00:00Duke's Umbrella is a gastro bar and restaurant located on Argyll Street in Glasgow.

00:08We have a bar area and restaurant area that specialises in gastro food, some twists on

00:16Scottish classics and casual all-day dining.

00:19I think Glasgow lacks a good kind of gastro pub.

00:22There's a lot of sports bars or just pubs itself, whereas Duke's kind of differentiates

00:29from that because you can come in here, have a nice beer after work, or a cocktail.

00:33We have lots of nice signature cocktails or classic cocktails.

00:37But then you can come in for a lovely three-course meal or one-course meal as well, listen to

00:41good music.

00:42I mean, as you can see, it's all kind of like open brickwork, quite dark, so it makes it

00:46feel quite like homely, warm, and we have like a fireplace over there as well.

00:53So it's just kind of, you want to come in here, I think it works very well on a cold

00:57day, get a nice hearty meal.

01:02I think that's kind of what they're trying to do here with the decorations.

01:05If someone was coming in here for the first time, what would you say the highlight is?

01:11The haggis for sure, homemade here, and not a lot of restaurants will make it homemade.

01:19The fish and chips is also very, very good, and each day we do a different seasonal pie

01:24and sausage and mash as well, so they're kind of good to keep coming back for because

01:28they change every day.

01:30We're between Glasgow Central and Anderson, we're right next to the JP Morgan building

01:35that's just opened up.

01:36So since that's kind of opened, you've seen a lot more kind of cafes, restaurants opening

01:42up.

01:43Before that, it was just really us and the little cafe next door, so it was quite quiet,

01:47but we've noticed that this street has become a lot more popular with places opening up

01:54due to the offices, the hotels surrounding, and I believe the council are planning on

01:59doing some works here to pedestrianise that as well.

02:02So I think looking into the next year or two, you'll see a lot more places opening up.
