It took me two and a half years to finally understand what voltage is.

It's actually very simple.

Imagine an electron as a basketball.

When it's still on the ground, the potential energy of the ball is zero.

When we throw the ball up, we need to act against gravity.

When the ball flies into the air, it will gain potential energy.

The potential energy difference between the ball and the ground

will drive the basketball to automatically fall back to the ground.

In the electric field, gravity has little effect.

The potential difference that drives the electron flow

is what we often call voltage.

Just like a battery in a circuit,

the positive and negative electrodes have different charges.

The positive electrode has a high charge

and the negative electrode has a low charge.

When the circuit is not connected,

the positive and negative charges in the battery attract each other

and the electrons cannot move freely.

But when connected with a wire,

the negative electrode undergoes an oxidation reaction to produce electrons,

just like a water tower releasing water,

and the positive electrode undergoes a reduction reaction to absorb electrons,

just like a steam pipe network absorbing water.

The electrons will move freely through the wire,

automatically running from the negative electrode to the positive electrode,

and the potential difference between the two electrodes will gradually decrease.

When the battery is exhausted, the electrons will stop moving.

If we use a voltmeter at both ends of the battery,

we can also measure the voltage.

For example, if the positive voltage of the battery is 3.5 V

and the negative voltage of the battery is 2 V,

then the voltage of the battery is 1.5 V.

If three batteries are connected in series,

the voltage becomes 4.5 V.

If the voltage is very small, you may only feel a little bit of a tingle,

but if the voltage is very large, you may feel a stronger sensation.
