00:08How did Nikola Tesla achieve this?

00:11This is actually a net-attached generator, different from a rotary generator.

00:16According to Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction,

00:20a conductor moving through a magnetic field generates an electromotive force,

00:25creating an induced current.

00:27Tesla replaced the permanent magnet with an electromagnet

00:31and wound a copper coil around the end of the net-attached steam engine's piston rod.

00:36Next, let's look at the working principle of the steam engine.

00:40First, high temperature, high pressure steam enters from the right end.

00:45The slide valve and piston inside move up and down under the steam pressure.

00:50Tesla then simplified it by converting the slide valve into a valve,

00:55forming two L-shaped hollow channels.

00:57When high pressure steam enters the top of the cylinder from the left side,

01:02it forces the piston downward.

01:04Then, the right side connects, and the steam reaching the bottom forces the piston upward.

01:10Two exhaust pipes were added on each side,

01:12ultimately causing the steam engine piston to move upward.

01:16The greater the steam pressure, the faster the piston reciprocates.

01:20But Tesla was not satisfied.

01:22He wanted the piston to maintain a constant frequency

01:25regardless of steam pressure changes.

01:28So, he connected a sealed air spring system to the steam engine.

01:32The principle is simple.

01:33If the piston compresses the air inside,

01:36removing the external force will cause the air to bounce the piston back like a spring,

01:41oscillating at a constant frequency.

01:44The steam engine then operates at the natural frequency of the air spring system.

01:49In reality, the force acting on the piston is intermittent.

01:54The input of high pressure steam is interrupted for a short period,

01:58similar to pushing a pendulum with both hands.

02:01Slightly increasing the force keeps the frequency constant,

02:04but the amplitude increases.

02:07Similarly, the greater the steam pressure, the greater the amplitude,

02:11but the piston oscillation period or frequency remains unchanged.

02:16Ultimately, the entire system operates at the same frequency,

02:20outputting alternating current at a constant frequency.

02:24However, during Tesla's experiment, a seven-story building shook like an earthquake.

02:29The vibration frequency of the steam-powered device

02:33matched the natural frequency of the seven-story building,

02:36causing resonance and triggering the earthquake.

02:39For safety reasons, the research had to be abandoned.

02:42In contrast, rotary generators are less complex and more reliable.

02:47Tesla's generator was eventually phased out,

02:50but its principles can be applied to geodynamics research.
