In 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River, leading to one of the deadliest maritime disasters in U.S. history. Overloaded with recently freed Union soldiers, the explosion killed more than 1,800 people, overshadowing the end of the Civil War. The tragedy highlighted both the dangers of overcrowded transport and the resilience of those who survived.
