Opposition MP Roodal Moonilal is calling for an investigation into the asset integrity of all vessels within the Coast Guard.

Speaking at the UNC’s weekly Sunday morning press conference, Moonilal said the country is in crisis as our borders remain wide open.

His comments come on the heels of Friday’s National Security press conference where it was revealed that multiple coast guard patrol vessels were not working.

Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:10Opposition MP Dr Rudal Munilal on Sunday condemned the government's handling of the nation's
00:15safety and security, specifically raising the issue of wide-open borders, as revealed
00:21by the chief of defence staff at a news conference on Friday.
00:26It's the first time, you know, the head of our defence establishment, called chief of
00:31defence staff, has indicated to all smugglers, all traffickers, all illegal movement of immigrants,
00:38I want to give all you the news. We have nothing in the sea right now to look at you. So if
00:43you're coming, let us know. That is where we reach. Call first.
00:49Dr Munilal says when the more recently purchased vessels were launched a couple years ago,
00:55the government boasted of the protection they would bring. Something, he says, which
01:00couldn't be further from the truth today.
01:03In the Coast Guard today, the two Cape Cloud vessels are not operational. Six Damon vessels,
01:08including two utility vehicle vessels, are not functional. The legacy vessels are not
01:14functional and we are in a state of crisis. I am asking for an inventory. We are asking
01:21for an inventory of all Coast Guard assets. If they have a bicycle, I want to know if
01:25the tyre is good. I want to know that. If they have a motorbike, I want to know what
01:29they're doing with that. If they have a raft, a pirogue, anything, you know, we want to
01:34know what is the state of those vessels.
