00:00Statistics from Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency

00:04shows that besides the almost 200 people killed in recent flooding,

00:08more than half a million others have been affected in other ways.

00:12More than 200,000 people have lost their homes.

00:16Similarly, more than 100,000 hectares of farmlands have been lost.

00:21The loss of farmland is likely to affect Nigeria's food security.

00:26Even then, authorities say the worst is yet to come.

00:30There are warnings that more deaths and destruction will be recorded

00:34between now and the end of October,

00:36when the raining season is expected to reach its peak.

00:40The worst affected areas are the northern parts of the country,

00:44which are transversed by some of Nigeria's largest rivers,

00:47like the Niger and Benue.

00:50The northern region is an area prone to environmental degradation

00:54and extreme weather conditions.

00:56The region is also the poorest in the country.

00:59The poverty rate has encouraged insecurity, terrorism and political uprising.

01:05In the northeast, Islamic groups like Boko Haram are quite active,

01:11while in the northwest, armed groups known as bandits are very active.

01:16It is feared that the poverty, homelessness, hunger and other hardship

01:21caused by the recent flooding will further heighten insecurity

01:25and religious extremism in the region.
