00:00Washington is moving to wind down health assistance to Zimbabwe after negotiations over a U.S. proposed funding deal broke
00:07down.
00:08A requirement for Zimbabwe to share sensitive health data triggered the collapse.
00:13Harare said it would not accept the condition, citing concerns about sovereignty, fairness and data protection,
00:19along with Washington's broader shift away from global health institutions.
00:23In a separate development, Zimbabwe has suspended exports of all raw minerals with immediate effect.
00:30It comes after the government alleged malpractices and leakages.
00:34Sharon Manzing, Gia Zou, takes a look now.
00:41President Emerson Nangagwa refused a health agreement with the United States that Zimbabwe branded as an equal exchange
00:50because it had too many conditions attached to it.
00:54One of the conditions is on health data.
00:57The plan wanted Harare to share its epidemiological information from citizens over an extended period of time
01:06with no guarantee of corresponding medical innovations such as treatment, diagnostics, vaccines as a result of the shared data.
01:16Another sensitive issue is access to strategic resources that was part of the deal that Zimbabwe says it will not
01:24accept.
01:25The government hasn't specified which strategic resources, but the move falls within the ban of all raw minerals
01:33and lithium concentrate that Harare imposed on Wednesday.
01:37As a consequence of the health deal suspension, the U.S. Embassy in Harare said that it is suspending the
01:45health support to Zimbabwe,
01:48which consists of 1.29 billion U.S. dollars since 2006.
01:54Sixteen African countries have signed the health agreement with the United States.
01:59Kenya has temporarily suspended its agreement due to privacy concerns.
