Uganda detains opposition lawmakers, trial postponed for second time

00:00Just over a month ago, 36 activists of the FDC, one of Uganda's largest opposition parties,

00:06were arrested during a trip to Kenya and sent back to their country.

00:10According to the Ugandan prosecution, these members of the Forum for

00:14Democratic Change had travelled to the neighbouring country to train for

00:18terrorist acts in preparation for subversive actions.

00:22At this stage, the authorities have not provided further details regarding the charges.

00:26According to the FDC party, however, its members had travelled to Kenya to attend

00:31several leadership seminars and training sessions.

00:34They have been held for over a month now in a prison north of Kampala.

00:38Their lawyer calls the charges ridiculous and says they could face life sentences.

00:44Several NGOs and Ugandan key opposition figures have called for their release already.

00:49The trial, which was set to begin this Monday, has been postponed for the second time.

00:55The court claims part of the investigation is still ongoing.
