00:00With e-commerce giant Lazada recording its first-ever monthly profit in July, two economists

00:09say online shopping in Malaysia will only continue to grow, and this, they said, would

00:16augur well for the economy.

00:18Lazada reported positive earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization for the

00:24first time last month, which its CEO James Dong attributed to the company's business

00:30strategy.

00:32Ruth Lim of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia said a booming e-commerce market helps generate

00:38jobs, foster innovation and create a wider range of choices for consumers.

00:44Lim also said a booming economy typically leads to higher disposable income, which is

00:50likely to be spent on non-essential goods, including online purchases.

00:55Meanwhile, Socio-Economic Research Centre Executive Director Lee Heng Kui said Malaysians

01:01have continued to shop online after the COVID-19 pandemic, and he expects the trend to continue.

01:08With this in mind, Lee said e-commerce businesses must have the right strategy to gain from

01:14the economic expansion.

01:16He praised Lazada's cost-saving strategies, which included optimising its logistics services

01:22and making use of technology to improve online sales.
