Round 14 of the 1999 F1 season at the Nurburgring.
Transcript
00:00:00He scored points in the last seven races, including two victories, and is just ten points
00:00:12shy of the driver's championship lead with a mere three races to go.
00:00:16Can he be world champion?
00:00:18Let's see if he can get past David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, and Eddie Irvine.
00:00:46Welcome to Nuremberg, Germany, a beautiful, just pictorial, picturesque area of the country
00:00:52where the enthusiasm is rampant for Formula One, and folks aren't afraid to show the colors
00:00:57of their favorite driver.
00:00:58It's the Grand Prix of Europe, round 14 of the FIA Formula One World Championship on
00:01:03Fox Sportsnet.
00:01:05Welcome to our Toyota pre-race, Mike Joy alongside five-time Le Mans winner and the star of the
00:01:10Goodwood Revival last week, Derek Bell, and from the London Sunday Times and F1 Racing
00:01:15magazine, Peter Windsor, will join us from the pit lane.
00:01:18The driver's going out for reconnaissance laps, and there's David Coulthard and Mika
00:01:24Hakkinen for McLaren Mercedes in this championship season where seemingly no one driver can put
00:01:31this title chase away.
00:01:32Hakkinen and Irvine are knotted at 60 points, Heinz-Harald Frentzen with his win in Monza
00:01:37just ten points back, David Coulthard only 12 out of the lead, and the Schumacher brothers.
00:01:44Well, in the constructors, the title's just as close.
00:01:46McLaren Mercedes only six points ahead of Ferrari.
00:01:50Jordan third, Winfield-Williams fourth, Stewart, and then Benetton-Payet, sixth.
00:01:56Well, last race in Monza.
00:01:58Derek, here's what happened.
00:02:01Yes, Monza was quite something.
00:02:02It wasn't the greatest race in the world, but my goodness, there was lots of entertainment,
00:02:06lots of interesting things happened.
00:02:07We expected Mika Hakkinen to go off and try to consolidate his situation in the World Championship.
00:02:12Here he is, fending off all the cars behind him as he comes down to turn one.
00:02:16My goodness me, I'd hate to try and get by Mika at this point.
00:02:19Leads for the first chicane.
00:02:21Ralf Schumacher takes a bit of a shortcut, nearly T-bones his ex-teammate Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:02:26Nevertheless, a very interesting bit of driving went on as we went through the field.
00:02:30It was Ralf Schumacher that slides by Zanardi when he backs off to let his teammate through
00:02:34to see if he can do battle, and then Zanardi has a good move later on.
00:02:39But meanwhile, it's the two tail-enders that have a real, real moment as they're going into chicane.
00:02:44Zanardi gets by Coulthard, let's have a chat with Zanardi.
00:02:49Very good start, I was in the position to actually pass Hakkinen,
00:02:52but then I decided that it was too risky, more for him than for me.
00:02:57And then the car was handling beautifully, but then the floor broke and started to crash on the ground
00:03:05and it was slowing me down on the straight and obviously in the corners as well,
00:03:09because I lost a lot of downforce because of it.
00:03:12It's a shame, but at least the performance was there.
00:03:16Well, that certainly showed everybody he had the ability to do it, but Mika Hakkinen was easily in the lead.
00:03:21He makes a mistake, drops into first gear instead of second, locks it all up,
00:03:25drops the clutch, doesn't work, and he gets out very, very frustrated indeed.
00:03:29Not good and a very, very bad sign for him in the World Championship.
00:03:32When he had it, I thought, barely sewn up.
00:03:35He was very emotional, took time behind the bushes, but nevertheless,
00:03:38it was the exceptional pit work of the Jordan team that Heinz-Hauer-Frenzel had one stop.
00:03:43Super bit of work from Heinz-Hauer-Frenzel and goes on to win the third Formula One Grand Prix career victory.
00:03:49Second for Jordan.
00:03:50Great bit of driving by this team and a super piece of work by the whole outfit.
00:03:54I mean, I thought it was exceptional for him. Great drive.
00:03:57Well, he has really taken up the glove in this chase for the championship.
00:04:01Here is Frenzel, Damon Hill, pulling in after a recon, or pulling out rather,
00:04:05and here is Frenzel going out, having a look around the circuit.
00:04:10He is certainly the man of the hour.
00:04:12Well, Peter, is this the championship that no driver can just jump out and just grab by the neck?
00:04:18What's the news this week?
00:04:21Mike, here in the paddock, the atmosphere is absolutely electric.
00:04:24I'm almost hoarse.
00:04:25Everybody's talking about this World Championship, this critical race.
00:04:29Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher back in Switzerland, again having to watch this event on television.
00:04:33His right leg still not healed.
00:04:35Probably not going to race in Malaysia either,
00:04:37although Michael did take time this weekend to take the Ferrari team to his own kart track here in Germany.
00:04:42Gave them a great time out.
00:04:43Michael was there limping heavily, looking a bit pale, looking a bit thin,
00:04:47but still talking about coming back with a vengeance as soon as possible.
00:04:50Meanwhile, some of the details of the recent mega-deals have emerged.
00:04:54It appears that Ferrari definitely decided to replace Eddie Irvine as long ago as the Brazilian Grand Prix.
00:05:00And in that time, Rubens Barrichello has been negotiating, not his money,
00:05:03because the retainer was always going to be Irvine-type money at Ferrari,
00:05:06around $3 million a year.
00:05:08But Barrichello was very keen to have a firm two-year contract, which indeed he has.
00:05:12It also emerges that Stuart Jaguar were very, very confident of signing Micah Hakkinen for next year.
00:05:18And they were completely shocked when Hakkinen decided to re-sign for McLaren Mercedes.
00:05:23I don't think anybody else in the world was, but Jaguar-Stuart were.
00:05:27Olivier Panis re-signed in Formula 1, driving now for Arrows Supertec.
00:05:31His teammate next year will be Pedro de la Rosa.
00:05:34Tora Takagi, obviously then looking for a drive, probably in the kart series.
00:05:37Meanwhile, Damon Hill, will he race in the last two events?
00:05:40Well, we've seen him practicing on a computer game, trying to get used to the Malaysian circuit.
00:05:44Judging by the amount of time he spent on the grass and on the curves, perhaps he shouldn't make the trip.
00:05:48But we believe he will. Back to you.
00:05:50Thanks, Peter.
00:05:51Well, the official word, as you watch Heinz-Errol Trentzen out on the course, from McLaren,
00:05:56was that Micah Hakkinen did not go off in the woods in a crying fit at Monza,
00:06:02but rather, he was swearing at what had happened and didn't want the cameras to pick up and do a little lip-reading.
00:06:08Anyway, what did Hakkinen say when he got back to the McLaren pit to Ron Dennis? Peter asked him.
00:06:14Sorry.
00:06:16And what did you say to him?
00:06:19I wasn't angry.
00:06:20I mean, when someone's clearly in as much pain as he was, it's not a productive thing to do, to increase it.
00:06:30I mean, good management supports people in that situation, and when they make mistakes,
00:06:38you don't take someone's mistakes and use it as a weapon against them.
00:06:42He didn't need me to inflict any more pain on him.
00:06:45He knew he'd made a mistake which cost him dearly, as we have done as a team.
00:06:50And when we make mistakes, he's supportive to us and vice versa.
00:06:56You've got to act as a team in failure as well as success.
00:06:59Is there anything you can do to the gear change mechanism on the car to prevent an error having the same result in future?
00:07:06The system actually has already a failsafe which does not allow first gear to be selected above a certain speed,
00:07:16but he was driving so slowly, he actually was driving under that threshold.
00:07:23Well, if Mika was running slowly, that's probably why he did it,
00:07:26because he wasn't concentrating just as hard as he should have been.
00:07:28It just shows you've got to keep the pressure on all the time.
00:07:31That's true.
00:07:32Well, what will be the face of Ford in Formula 1 next year?
00:07:35As rumored at the Frankfurt Auto Show, they showed off their new livery.
00:07:38It will be the Jaguar Leaping Cat on the Ford Formula 1 team.
00:07:42This is not the shade of British Racing Green we're accustomed to,
00:07:45but we're told it shows up very well on television.
00:07:51Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage for the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:07:54Eddie Irvine, first equal in the World Driving Championship,
00:07:58trying to put a lead away here at the Nürburgring.
00:08:02Derek?
00:08:03Well, a very, very nice little track, a shadow of its former self,
00:08:07set here in this wonderful Eiffel Mountains.
00:08:09Let's go and do a lap with Damon Hill.
00:08:14Storming past the pits.
00:08:15Thought this was done on Friday when the sun was out.
00:08:17Going by the pits, up to 180 miles an hour, down to third gear for the Castrol S.
00:08:22Through here, you've got to keep it very smooth.
00:08:24All these corners, you've got to keep very, very smooth indeed.
00:08:26They run on the curbs, but it really isn't a great advantage.
00:08:29Just keep it very, very smooth the whole time.
00:08:32Left-hander as he works his way down into the forward kerb.
00:08:35Forward kerb, don't want to lock up that right-hand front wheel.
00:08:38Easily done as they turn into that corner.
00:08:40See, the kerbs are very, very smooth indeed.
00:08:42The circuit's a high downforce circuit, and there isn't very serious braking at all.
00:08:47Again, they're coming in there.
00:08:48Watch you don't lock that right-hand front brake up as they come in.
00:08:51Smooth as they come out.
00:08:54Works his way uphill for a firch there, flat-out left-hander,
00:08:58which will take him up into what they call the bit kerb.
00:09:03This is the RTL kerb, first of all,
00:09:05but you don't really almost waste that corner to get the bit kerb just right.
00:09:09Vital to come out of this corner using all the road as smooth as you can,
00:09:13because it takes you a long, long way.
00:09:15So this flat-out right-hander called the ITT kerb,
00:09:18170 miles an hour, up to 185.
00:09:20This corner here, you cannot see where you're going as you come into the corner.
00:09:24Whip, cross those kerbs in second.
00:09:26Very, very important corner indeed.
00:09:28Again, get the power down.
00:09:29Difficult to get this power down.
00:09:30Coming into Coca-Cola kerb.
00:09:32Pushes a lot, understeers as it goes through here.
00:09:34Careful, you've got to get traction.
00:09:36That was a lap of the Nürburgring with Damon Hill.
00:09:40Well, it was sunny here Friday, but it's been anything else since,
00:09:43and the qualifying session was one of the most exciting in recent memory.
00:09:46It started out with a completely wet track,
00:09:49but as the track got drier, the track got faster,
00:09:51and the fastest qualifier changed maybe a dozen times.
00:09:55Chopped and changed the whole way through.
00:09:57It was quite an amazing qualifying session.
00:09:59Sometimes it's like watching paint dry.
00:10:01This week, it certainly wasn't.
00:10:02It was waiting for the water to dry,
00:10:04and that's exactly what it was.
00:10:05Damon Hill went out first.
00:10:07Inevitably, he was quickest.
00:10:08He does, in fact, get pole much later on.
00:10:10Ended up finishing seventh.
00:10:12Mika Häkkinen went out in the early part of the session.
00:10:14He ultimately qualified in third place.
00:10:16Said himself afterwards,
00:10:18I couldn't have gone any quicker if I tried.
00:10:20Salo, he goes out, has a good try on the Ferrari,
00:10:22but for some reason, he's way down the grid in 12th place.
00:10:25But it did really depend on when you went out,
00:10:28what time you chose.
00:10:29Barry Keller goes out earlier on.
00:10:31He's very, very quick, always in the wet,
00:10:33but really his time didn't hold.
00:10:34Can he?
00:10:35Well, he had a great session,
00:10:37and he ended up qualifying fifth,
00:10:38a super session for him.
00:10:40Ralf Schumacher, twice Ralf goes out and gets quickest time,
00:10:43but then, as everybody did,
00:10:45every time you went out, you could get the quickest lap.
00:10:47Eddie Irvine, when he gets quickest,
00:10:49he's the first person out on the dry tyres.
00:10:52He goes out, gets quickest time,
00:10:54but then after, he's trying very, very hard indeed.
00:10:56Struggles, and in fact, goes off the road twice
00:10:59in his vain efforts to get up on that front row.
00:11:02David Coulthard, well,
00:11:03David's always trying to get on pole.
00:11:05This time, it's not Mika Häkkinen that thwarts him.
00:11:07It happens to be that man, Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:11:10Eddie Jordan, very, very happy indeed.
00:11:12Heinz-Harald lost two hours of practice over the weekend.
00:11:16Goes out right at the end after a row with the engineers.
00:11:18He has a superb job,
00:11:20and he gets out there and gets pole position.
00:11:23Peter Windsor's talking to Ralf Schumacher
00:11:25about his efforts in qualifying.
00:11:27Great qualifying session to watch
00:11:28and another great performance from Ralf Schumacher.
00:11:30You must be very pleased with P4.
00:11:32We are very pleased with it,
00:11:33but as you always have in those conditions,
00:11:35you could expect a bit more.
00:11:36You could have reached more,
00:11:37but on the other hand, you could lose everything,
00:11:39so I think, yeah, we are pleased.
00:11:41Going to be a very interesting race with a grid like this.
00:11:43Back to you.
00:11:44Yes, Peter, in the strategy for today's race,
00:11:46Derek, very weather dependent.
00:11:48Well, it looks like some blue sky in the background.
00:11:50Now it is drying up, but good start is absolutely vital
00:11:52because overtaking is very, very difficult.
00:11:54If it's wet, of course, fuel capacity is a problem
00:11:56because it would become a two-hour race.
00:11:58Engine drivability in the wet, of course,
00:12:00is another major factor.
00:12:02If it's dry, they use the hard tires
00:12:04and they'll get away with one stop.
00:12:06And, of course, the guys that use the softer of the soft,
00:12:08well, they will probably have to make two stops.
00:12:10And also, they have to consider
00:12:12that they have to scuff off those tires before they go out
00:12:15because they take time to come in.
00:12:17As we watch Jacques Villeneuve,
00:12:19as you've said, the start of the race is so critical.
00:12:21It's not only the driver,
00:12:23it's the components that are involved
00:12:25in getting that car off the line like a dragster
00:12:27and down toward the first corner.
00:12:29Peter has a look at the innards involved
00:12:31in getting the car off the line.
00:12:33Thanks, guys.
00:12:35Well, at Monza, we looked at the start procedure.
00:12:37Let's have a look at actually what goes on
00:12:39at the back of the engine.
00:12:41This is the beautiful automotive products,
00:12:43carbon clutch that all the Formula 1 teams use,
00:12:45including Minardi,
00:12:47great team down here at the other end of the pit lane.
00:12:49$10,000 per clutch,
00:12:51and every car has a new clutch
00:12:53every race.
00:12:5516 races, that's $160,000 a year
00:12:57just on clutches.
00:12:59Electronic clutches in Formula 1,
00:13:01and the clutch, as we've talked about recently,
00:13:03is a hand clutch, except in the case of a couple of drivers.
00:13:05David Coulthard also has a foot clutch,
00:13:07but it's an electronic clutch nonetheless.
00:13:09The hand clutch is here.
00:13:11It can be operated by either the left or the right hand.
00:13:13The driver coming up to the grid has the option
00:13:15either to come up in neutral and then
00:13:17pull the clutch and select first gear,
00:13:19changing up on the right, down on the left,
00:13:21or he can come up with first gear
00:13:23already selected. That's the preferred option.
00:13:25Marc Genet tried to select first gear on the grid
00:13:27in the Spanish Grand Prix and stripped
00:13:29first gear because there was no load on the rear wheels.
00:13:31Latest developments in Formula 1,
00:13:33Michael Schumacher, we believe, doing this already at Ferrari.
00:13:35Two potentiometers here
00:13:37operating two different clutch pedals.
00:13:39This one would be taken to the normal
00:13:41take-up point, and the right one he'd just pull
00:13:43and then release as soon as the lights go out.
00:13:45He's got double the effect, and he can
00:13:47just make a spring start.
00:13:49Not like the old days, eh, Derek? Back to you.
00:13:51I must admit, it certainly was a lot easier
00:13:53just using a clutch pedal, I must admit,
00:13:55and, of course, I have a job to concentrate on steering the wheel
00:13:57and then pulling all those levers.
00:13:59Yeah, and a lot less expensive, too, for the team.
00:14:01Jean Alési in conference with the
00:14:03Sauber team.
00:14:05New father, Julian,
00:14:07his second son.
00:14:09Well, in any NASCAR
00:14:11or kart paddock, you'll find it filled
00:14:13with quarter-million-dollar or more motorhomes.
00:14:15Drivers, crew chiefs, officials,
00:14:17and, yes, even broadcasters have them.
00:14:19The Formula 1 trailer park has only
00:14:21one resident, Jacques Villeneuve.
00:14:23Until now, David Coulthard has a new
00:14:25motor coach. Here's a look at it.
00:14:27We'll be right back.
00:14:31Welcome back to the Nürburgring
00:14:33and our Toyota pre-race coverage
00:14:35of the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:14:37A rather chilly day.
00:14:39Everybody grateful for three layers of Nomex
00:14:41for the snowmobile suit.
00:14:43It's only 56 degrees out.
00:14:45Track temperature, the asphalt, a little bit warmed by
00:14:47some sunlight there at 60.
00:14:49Humidity, look at that, 85%
00:14:51chance of rain.
00:14:53Five out of eight. Winds out of the southwest
00:14:55at five. We'd like to hear

00:15:25Just two more races remaining
00:15:27after today, October 17th, Malaysia.
00:15:29October 31st, Japan
00:15:31will be seen live in most markets
00:15:33but please check your local listings
00:15:35because air times vary
00:15:37during the NFL season.
00:15:39Eddie Irvine,
00:15:41even with Mika Hakkinen
00:15:43in the Drivers' Championship,
00:15:45someone will leave here with the lead
00:15:47but whom? That is the
00:15:49big question. Three races remain.
00:15:51Let's have a quick look back
00:15:53at the first 13 of this season.
00:15:551999.
00:15:57Formula 1. Formula 1 season
00:15:59recap.
00:16:01The 98 World Champions,
00:16:03Mika Hakkinen and McLaren Mercedes,
00:16:05began their title defense in Australia
00:16:07but failed to finish,
00:16:09opening the door for a breakthrough victory
00:16:11for Eddie Irvine. I'm glad my dad didn't come
00:16:13to this one because he never comes to my first
00:16:15victories.
00:16:17We went halfway around the globe to Brazil
00:16:19where Rubens Barrichello
00:16:21led his home Grand Prix but failed
00:16:23to finish.
00:16:25Mika Hakkinen and Mercedes regained
00:16:27form.
00:16:29On to San Marino
00:16:31where Hakkinen suffered his second
00:16:33DNF in three races
00:16:35and Michael Schumacher got his first win
00:16:37of the season.
00:16:39Thanks to the team because they've done a great
00:16:41job strategy-wise, car performance-wise,
00:16:43everything.
00:16:45After Spain and Monaco, back across the
00:16:47pond to Canada and the usual
00:16:49opening lap melee.
00:16:51But the hits kept on coming. Leader Michael
00:16:53Schumacher crashed at this corner as did
00:16:55many drivers including Canadian
00:16:57Jack Villeneuve.
00:16:59And Mika Hakkinen once again
00:17:01is victorious.
00:17:03In a very wet
00:17:05French Grand Prix, Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:17:07struggled to find gear.
00:17:09He did and found his way to the top
00:17:11of the podium for his second Grand Prix
00:17:13win and his first for Eddie Jordan.
00:17:17On to the first
00:17:19lap of the British Grand Prix where Schumacher
00:17:21goes straight off the course and crashes
00:17:23out of the title chase.
00:17:25Mika Hakkinen is unable to capitalize
00:17:27and his teammate David Coulthard
00:17:29wins his home Grand Prix.
00:17:31This is definitely
00:17:33the best feeling I've ever
00:17:35had in my recent career.
00:17:37Ferrari throws their support behind
00:17:39Eddie Irvine and Coulthard's season goes
00:17:41from first to worst as he dumps
00:17:43teammate Hakkinen in the second
00:17:45corner. Irvine's Ferrari
00:17:47goes on to win.
00:17:49I'm
00:17:51very sorry for running into Mika but I
00:17:53misjudged that
00:17:55corner.
00:17:57Irvine's title chase is building momentum
00:17:59at the German Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher
00:18:01addresses his countrymen and hopes
00:18:03to be back soon.
00:18:05Here's what he's missing. Mika Hakkinen
00:18:07cuts down a tire and spins out
00:18:09of the race into the fence.
00:18:11And Ferrari scores a 1-2
00:18:13finish.
00:18:17In Belgium, Mika Hakkinen gets
00:18:19off to a slow start. Coulthard
00:18:21crowds him at the first corner.
00:18:23They touch. Coulthard gets away for the victory.
00:18:25Hakkinen's not happy.
00:18:27Experience
00:18:29again.
00:18:31Not very pleasant but
00:18:33no further comments to be honest.
00:18:35McLaren's misfortunes
00:18:37keep Irvine's Ferrari in
00:18:39the title chase. But Hakkinen
00:18:41scores his 11th pole of the season
00:18:43in Italy. He
00:18:45builds an 8-second lead and then
00:18:47spins out of the race
00:18:49for the third time in
00:18:51his last six races.
00:18:53Heinz-Harald Frentzen gets his second win of the
00:18:55season and now it's a four-horse race.
00:18:59Well, the telling
00:19:01statistic, Derek, right there in the lower right
00:19:03corner, three DNFs in the
00:19:05last seven races for Mika. Yes, I mean
00:19:07by now they should have won this world championship
00:19:09and they haven't and I think they've got a lot to answer
00:19:11for. Especially without
00:19:13Michael Schumacher, it is now a four-horse
00:19:15race. He would have made it five
00:19:17but he may be back for Malaysia
00:19:19and again, maybe not.
00:19:23David
00:19:25Coulthard sets to strap in. He'll start from the outside
00:19:27of the second row.
00:19:29The Nurburgring marks
00:19:31the final. A
00:19:33Grand Prix in Europe for
00:19:35Ford Stewart. Brandon has a team
00:19:37that will be Jaguar next year so
00:19:39they took the occasion to host
00:19:41a gala party.
00:19:43The Nurburgring, we will be
00:19:45right back.
00:19:49The Grand Prix of Europe on Fox Sports
00:19:51Net is brought to you by Toyota.
00:19:53Every day belongs to you. Make it count.
00:19:55Toyota, every day.
00:19:59Beautiful countryside here
00:20:01surrounding the Nurburgring
00:20:03as we get set for round
00:20:0514 of the world championship.
00:20:07Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:20:09is our pole sitter and he's also
00:20:11the subject of Peter's Formula
00:20:13one-on-one interview this week. The man that
00:20:15has come to within 10 points of the lead
00:20:17in the driver's championship.
00:20:19It's been a great year for Heinz-Harald
00:20:21Frentzen and Jordan Honda. I spoke to him about
00:20:23his highs and lows this season but I
00:20:25began by asking him about the Jordan Honda
00:20:27car itself. How good was it when he
00:20:29first drove it last winter?
00:20:31The car is basically
00:20:33quick right out of
00:20:35the box and
00:20:37the car does react to
00:20:39all the changes we have done so far
00:20:41and I found it this
00:20:43year
00:20:45that together with the engineering group
00:20:47that we could really do a lot of
00:20:49things with the car. We were quick
00:20:51in any kind of tracks.
00:20:53What is the Jordan team like
00:20:55to work with specifically? Mike Gascoyne
00:20:57and Eddie. How's your relationship with Eddie?
00:20:59Well, very nice. I mean
00:21:01I have to say it was a bit
00:21:03easy for me this year because I started
00:21:05with the second place in Melbourne
00:21:07and we were right
00:21:09there from the beginning at the points
00:21:11and
00:21:13I think we both, I mean me
00:21:15and the team, we just
00:21:17got in a good rhythm there
00:21:19and we
00:21:21grew together and
00:21:23the relationship is quite good.
00:21:25What was your reaction when
00:21:27you saw or even heard that
00:21:29Mika had gone off at Monza?
00:21:31Well, I was
00:21:33immediately, I knew that I
00:21:35would gain a place but
00:21:37the next moment I,
00:21:39at that stage I don't really
00:21:41appreciate that because
00:21:43when he dropped off
00:21:45at lap 30 I think
00:21:47it was still a long race to go
00:21:49and
00:21:51I think most of the racing driver has
00:21:53experienced that. You shouldn't be too happy
00:21:55about somebody in front of you falling off.
00:21:57It could happen to you anytime.
00:21:59Have you any experience
00:22:01with the United States and your thoughts
00:22:03on America and how do you think Formula 1
00:22:05will go in America?
00:22:07Well,
00:22:09I don't have a clue
00:22:11how it looks like now in America
00:22:13to go to Indy. I mean I'm looking forward
00:22:15to see a new track, to see new circumstances
00:22:17and I've never been
00:22:19in Indy so it would be
00:22:21a nice chance to drive there
00:22:23and to have
00:22:25another additional
00:22:27environment, new environment there.
00:22:29I'm looking forward
00:22:31for that. I mean it's a good chance
00:22:33really to see
00:22:35American Formula 1 fans.
00:22:39He's very calm, he's very measured
00:22:41and he's a championship contender this year
00:22:43and certainly in 2000. Back to you.
00:22:45It's amazing to think he nearly
00:22:47came over to drive for Bobby Rahal in car,
00:22:49isn't it? Yes.
00:22:51Possibly winning the world championship.
00:22:53Well he's within 10 points of that
00:22:55as we grow
00:22:57closer to the start
00:22:59of the Grand Prix of Europe at the
00:23:01Nürburgring. You're watching
00:23:03Formula 1 on Fox Sports Net.
00:23:05Back with the starting grid and the start of the race
00:23:07in a moment.
00:23:17Welcome back to our Fox Sports Net coverage
00:23:19of the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:23:21The formation lap has begun.
00:23:23As we
00:23:25ride with Alex Virts, let's
00:23:27get to our starting grid, our
00:23:29Toyota starting grid for today's Grand
00:23:31Prix of Europe. Heinz-Harald Frentzen is
00:23:33on pole for Jordan Hugain Honda.
00:23:35And David Coulthard still cannot
00:23:37quite get that coveted pole position.
00:23:39But he did out-qualify
00:23:41his McLaren teammate Nika HÃ¥konen
00:23:43who will start third. Ralf Schumacher just
00:23:45two hundredths of a second behind Nika.
00:23:47Olivier Pagny
00:23:49for Prost has his second best qualifying
00:23:51effort of the season, fifth.
00:23:53Well, he was quickest this morning
00:23:55in warm-up, been there all weekend. Great position,
00:23:57third.
00:23:59Strong effort for Damon Hill. He's on the
00:24:01inside of row four in the Jordan.
00:24:03And Jacques Villeneuve's been very up about the
00:24:05B.A.R. all weekend.
00:24:07Where are the Ferraris? Well, there's Eddie Irvine
00:24:09back in ninth place.
00:24:11Jarno Trulli being outshone, of course, by his
00:24:13teammate Pagny's. And Alexander
00:24:15Virts who rode with a moment ago. He will start
00:24:17back in eleventh for Benetton.
00:24:19Mika Sala once, be wondering just what happened
00:24:21between that, that car and the Ferrari.
00:24:23And the best of the Saubers this
00:24:25week, Pedro Zenitz in thirteenth.
00:24:27Johnny Herbert out-qualifying just
00:24:29Rubens Barrichello.
00:24:31Barrichello in fifteenth for Stewart.
00:24:33John Olasey for Sauber, the sixteenth position.
00:24:35Riccardo Zonta for B.A.R.
00:24:37in seventeenth. Alec Zanardi
00:24:39suffered the eighteenth position.
00:24:41The Minardis are not
00:24:43last. They're in the tenth row. Luca Badua
00:24:45and Marc Genet. Meanwhile,
00:24:47Aero's fortunes continue to fall
00:24:49like the U.S. stock market. There is
00:24:51Takagi and De La Rosa anchoring the
00:24:53grid from row eleven.
00:24:57On board with Damon Hill.
00:25:03And at the top of the
00:25:05world championship, Stan Mika Hockenen
00:25:07who starts third today and
00:25:09Eddie Irvine who starts way back
00:25:11in ninth. Ten points back of them.
00:25:13The pole sitter Frenson and the outside
00:25:15pole sitter Coulthard, twelve points off the lead
00:25:17and the Schumacher brothers.
00:25:19The Constructors, McLaren
00:25:21Mercedes, a hundred and eight points. The Ferraris
00:25:23a hundred and two, followed by Jordan at fifty-seven.
00:25:25Winfield at thirty. Stewart,
00:25:27Ford at seventeen, and Benson, Pylife at sixteen.
00:25:31Very unexpected standings
00:25:33for where we are in this season. I must
00:25:35just make a comment here. They have gone around
00:25:37on a very, very slow warming up lap.
00:25:39Those tires at this temperature are ambient
00:25:41and track temperature of fifty-six degrees.
00:25:43I find it very hard to keep these tires or get
00:25:45them back up to temperature again. Especially those guys
00:25:47on the harder of the soft compound.
00:25:49Let me just tell you, it is actually
00:25:51Stewart and Ferrari that are on the harder
00:25:53of the two soft compounds.
00:25:55Alright, safety cars coming into
00:25:57position. We are set for the start of round
00:25:59fourteen of the world championship.
00:26:01The European Grand Prix
00:26:03at the Nürburgring.
00:26:13Oh, did he hold them up?
00:26:15Oh dear.
00:26:17Yellow flags the wave.
00:26:21That won't have done their clutches much good
00:26:23doing that. They can't stand too many starts
00:26:25like this. And look at Schumacher
00:26:27almost running up the back of David Coulthard.
00:26:29That was very, I mean
00:26:31he just held them on that green light.
00:26:33When all the lights go out,
00:26:35they have an option, normally it's up to about five
00:26:37seconds before they were put on the
00:26:39green light. And that seemed a good
00:26:41five seconds to me. I don't know about you Mike.
00:26:45Now the start is aborted and whoever
00:26:47should the officials judge it was one of the cars
00:26:49that caused the aborted start, that car
00:26:51will be sent to the back of the grid.
00:26:57Well it certainly wasn't this man, Heinz Hauer-Frenzel
00:26:59certainly didn't jump the start. He hung on
00:27:01there for ages. And those engines revving
00:27:03at seventeen thousand revs waiting to let
00:27:05that hand clutch out. It must have put
00:27:07a lot of pressure through that system.
00:27:09Not good for it at all. They will
00:27:11set up for another formation
00:27:13lap. Very
00:27:15difficult to tell here what happened.
00:27:19But they'll set up for another formation lap
00:27:21and that will count as a race lap.
00:27:23It will shorten the race distance by one
00:27:25lap. Well you have to
00:27:27say something about the modern, these
00:27:29sort of clutches. In days
00:27:31gone by they would have had a problem there because some of
00:27:33the guys at back would have just gone and it would have
00:27:35been absolute chaos at the front.
00:27:37Well we saw in Monza, Peter's feature
00:27:39last week, or last race
00:27:41rather, two weeks ago, on the
00:27:43starting system and how it is employed
00:27:45and how the
00:27:47timing of that
00:27:49final light is variable. So
00:27:51the mechanics now rush onto the grid
00:27:53to the aid of the drivers and get them set up
00:27:55for another formation lap. Quickly
00:27:57the tire blankets going on
00:27:59to try to keep some heat
00:28:01in these tires as we wait
00:28:03for another formation lap.
00:28:07It's certainly dry now, one has to say that,
00:28:09but it still looks darn cold to me. Looks cooler than
00:28:1156 degrees out here.
00:28:15But of course now they have the problem
00:28:17to put the tire blankets back on again, get the
00:28:19tires warmer again.
00:28:21Some of the drivers get out to relax
00:28:23just a little bit. Well we'll have to sort
00:28:25out what happened here, but I don't see
00:28:27the officials rushing to
00:28:29move anyone to the back of the grid in penalty.
00:28:31Is it possible that the lighting
00:28:33system malfunctioned?
00:28:35We'll try to check that story out
00:28:37and fill you in when we
00:28:39come back. We are awaiting
00:28:41a second formation lap
00:28:43and again the start of the European Grand Prix
00:28:45on Fox Sportsnet.
00:28:49Welcome back to Fox
00:28:51Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:28:53Many of the teams have fitted new
00:28:55warmer tires that have been kept in
00:28:57the warming blankets for the second
00:28:59formation lap which will reduce the race
00:29:01length to 66 laps
00:29:03once we do get a start.
00:29:05So here is another formation lap
00:29:07and from what we can determine
00:29:09there may have been a malfunction with the
00:29:11timing lights themselves at the driver's
00:29:13view overhead to
00:29:15signal the start of the Grand Prix.
00:29:17It didn't look as though the fifth row of
00:29:19lights went on. Well unfortunately the
00:29:21sunshine is right on those lights and they
00:29:23don't even glow very brightly at all.
00:29:25But look way at the back of the grid.
00:29:27They're saying that Marc Genet
00:29:29moved prior to all of the lights
00:29:31coming on and that's why the start procedure
00:29:33was aborted.
00:29:35Well I must admit from where we were watching it didn't look
00:29:37as though that fifth of the last row of lights
00:29:39went red to me.
00:29:41Even when we saw it in slow motion
00:29:43just now it went on. Anyway
00:29:45here we have the situation where they're going around in their
00:29:47warm up lap. They've got to keep
00:29:49the temperature up on these tires.
00:29:51As you said Mike they have changed their tires
00:29:53they come back with another set of hot tires under the blankets
00:29:55sort of 100 degrees.
00:29:57They've brought them in, stuck them on the car
00:29:59and now the guys you can see they are going a lot faster
00:30:01this lap than they did on the warm up lap last time.
00:30:03This is the problem when the ambience is so
00:30:05cool as we arrive with Alexander
00:30:07Verts and the Benetton.
00:30:12Alright let's show you again what happened
00:30:14from the point of view of the starting
00:30:16lights when this start
00:30:18was aborted.
00:30:20The first few lights
00:30:22will come on at preset intervals.
00:30:26It did go red I just didn't see it
00:30:29but Genet had made the move
00:30:31further back and that was it.
00:30:33You see at the top of the screen, top right
00:30:35there was a yellow flag waving
00:30:37before the last light came on.
00:30:39That's why the start is
00:30:41aborted and Marc Genet will
00:30:43have to go to the back of the grid which is
00:30:45the grand distance of one car.
00:30:47One car just behind him, yes that's a big deal
00:30:49for him. He looked a bit wired up before
00:30:51the start sitting on the edge of the track.
00:30:53I thought this guy is determined to do well this weekend.
00:30:55I kind of wonder if you might not just go ahead
00:30:57and start the race and give him a stop and go
00:30:59as is done in
00:31:01many American series. Not to say that
00:31:03way is necessarily better.
00:31:05And certainly if it was a problem
00:31:07at the front of the grid it might
00:31:09carry more weight and have more impact.
00:31:15Only world champions
00:31:17have won the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:31:19Piquet, Prost, Mansell, Senna,
00:31:21Michael Schumacher,
00:31:23Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen.
00:31:27All right let's try it again.
00:31:29For the restart now the race distance
00:31:3166 laps as the cars
00:31:33come around to complete the second formation
00:31:35lap and file into position.
00:31:37Have a look
00:31:39at the bank of start lights and once
00:31:41again we are set for the start
00:31:43of the Grand Prix of Europe.

00:33:10Yeah, well, that's perfect.
00:33:12It is Pedro Diniz, the salvo that's upside down.
00:33:15Diniz, who started 13th.
00:33:20Well, it's perfectly adequate to just put that full course
00:33:23yellow out, unless the young man is hurt.
00:33:25Let's hope he isn't.
00:33:26He's trying to get out of the car, but I think he would
00:33:29certainly be very, very shaken having flicked over like that.
00:33:33Of course, if you can keep the safety car out, it means the
00:33:35guys can just keep their adrenaline going, bring them
00:33:38back to the start is still not a nice thing to do.
00:33:42And keep the heat in the tires.
00:33:44Looks like they're lifting one of the Jordans out, as you
00:33:45say, of Damon Hill.
00:33:49What a sad break for Damon in his final European start.
00:33:52It may well be his final start in Formula One.
00:33:54It might be the thing that makes his mind up now.
00:33:56Well, there was some speculation that he might skip
00:33:59the Far Eastern rounds in Malaysia and Japan, and that
00:34:03would spark quite a bit of driver
00:34:05swapping, back and forth.
00:34:08Let's see if we can find out what happened here at the
00:34:10second corner.
00:34:13Quite difficult, because they actually came into
00:34:14view out of control.
00:34:20You see Barkello got away a little bit slowly there.
00:34:23There is Damon, right in the middle of that lot.
00:34:25Look, see, Damon is, oh, look, there they come through.
00:34:28Oh, and the dirt.
00:34:30Damon actually is going dead slowly, I mean, really slowly.
00:34:33And then the Benetton comes through and flicks up.
00:34:36Donitz flicks him up.
00:34:38Look at him go around.
00:34:40Why couldn't he have just landed on the bottom of the
00:34:41car, like Zanardi out there beyond him, as well, got
00:34:45involved in that.
00:34:47Through the first corner.
00:34:49The other Sauber, Alessi, took to the dirt, too, as it looked
00:34:52like Damon kind of packed everybody up
00:34:54coming into that corner.
00:34:55Well, Damon just lost everything.
00:34:56He just didn't have any power.
00:34:57Look at that.
00:34:58Oh, my goodness, he's bouncing across.
00:35:00Oh, dear, dear, dear.
00:35:02That's not good at all.
00:35:04Yeah, Damon, there at the bottom of the screen,
00:35:05appeared to either lose the drive or lose the engine or
00:35:08lose the drive in the car from Burt's.
00:35:10This is Burt's angle.
00:35:10Here, look at Damon.
00:35:11Absolutely.
00:35:12So Burt swerves, and there's Donitz, goes by him.
00:35:15Of course, Burt swerves, and Donitz just catches him and
00:35:18runs over Burt's right front or right front wheel.
00:35:23And that just flicks him upside down.
00:35:27But the whole incident was triggered by Damon Hill, who
00:35:29either lost the engine or the gearbox or hydraulics, but
00:35:33something caused that car not to be accelerating, and the
00:35:37whole field packed up behind him.
00:35:41So we're behind the safety car with Frentzen leading
00:35:43Hockenheim, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, and Fisichella.
00:35:47So Donitz, Damon Hill, and Alexander
00:35:50Burt's out of it.
00:35:53Hard to call Hill as involved in the crash.
00:35:55He triggered it, but really, I don't know if he suffered any
00:35:58contact hurt.
00:35:59I know.
00:36:00It looked like Burt swung around the back of him, and
00:36:02that's what created the accident.
00:36:04Obviously, Burt didn't want to have an accident, and on the
00:36:06outside of him was, no doubt, Pedro Donitz, and it's taken a
00:36:09long time to get him out of this car.
00:36:13Now, one of the advances in Formula One this year is that,
00:36:17if necessary, the rescue crews can remove the driver and the
00:36:21seat in total.
00:36:22They've chosen not to do so.
00:36:23They put on a neck collar as a precaution.
00:36:25He gave a thumb up to everybody, as they now place
00:36:29him on the stretcher to go into the ambulance.
00:36:33Well, his head must have touched the ground.
00:36:35Look at the back of that car, my goodness gracious me.
00:36:38This is when, of course, one has to respect all the safety
00:36:41features that are very broad into Formula One.
00:36:43The fact that we're still, there's an old friend of mine,
00:36:45Walter Toshnik, on the left there, been with Sauber for a
00:36:48long, long time.
00:36:49Here we go.
00:36:49Let's just watch it again.
00:36:50There he goes.
00:36:52Yeah, nobody touches Damon, but.
00:36:54Meanwhile, of course, there is Donitz
00:36:56bouncing down the road.
00:36:58And the other car that went way off in the grass around
00:37:00was Zanardi in the second Williams.
00:37:03Here we go again.
00:37:03Here's a better angle.
00:37:05See Damon there on the right of your screen going very,
00:37:07very slowly.
00:37:08Salo pulls out to overtake him.
00:37:10On the inside goes, looks like one of the pros.
00:37:12And then, of course, there we go.
00:37:14Wurtz pulls out.
00:37:15Look at him.
00:37:16I mean, look at his head.
00:37:17He's very, very lucky if he doesn't get hurt.
00:37:19I mean, he seemed to be all right, but I mean, just shows
00:37:22they've done this roll cage just about right.
00:37:24So the driver's head has to be below that line between the
00:37:27top of the dashboard and the top of the roll bar so that
00:37:30the head doesn't hit the ground in an instant.
00:37:31Look at that, Wurtz.
00:37:32Actually, it's Wurtz's right front slamming into the left
00:37:36rear of Donitz.
00:37:38And no one hits Damon.
00:37:43But Pedro Donitz, as he was carried out, was conscious,
00:37:47talking to the medics, gave the crowd a thumbs up, and was
00:37:50helping to direct his own recovery.
00:37:54So a tumultuous start to the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:37:57We will be right back with you on Fox Sportsnet.
00:38:01Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage of the
00:38:03Grand Prix of Europe.
00:38:04An aborted start.
00:38:07Blamed it on Marc Genet.
00:38:08And then a crash at turn two when the race is
00:38:12officially started.
00:38:14There's Alexander Wurtz's view as he tries to keep from
00:38:16running over Damon Hill.
00:38:17He launches Pedro Donitz.
00:38:19That was absolutely astonishing, the way he
00:38:21actually launched him.
00:38:22You wouldn't think he would flick the car in the air.
00:38:24And here he is.
00:38:24He's waving to the crowd.
00:38:25They've got his neck in a brace.
00:38:27They load him onto a stretcher.
00:38:30And then sometime later, they put him into the ambulance.
00:38:32But it was one heck of an accident.
00:38:33And in fact, when we saw the car just now, the roll bar
00:38:37was missing.
00:38:38The roll bar behind his head that normally would support
00:38:41his head, or shield his head, was missing from the car.
00:38:44So he must have taken quite a whack at some point.
00:38:46Well, I'm sure that when the car went over, the ground is
00:38:48so wet from the rains that we've had here all week.
00:38:52And during the weekend, the roll bar just dug in.
00:38:55And surprising that it would be sheared off like that.
00:38:58Well, they've obviously got to do something in the safety
00:39:00features, because that's something that I always say is
00:39:02the greatest part of these new cars, is the support that they
00:39:05get from this roll bar.
00:39:06And obviously, it didn't work in that case.
00:39:08So the Mercedes safety car leads the field around as we
00:39:12have a look at the order.
00:39:13Pulse that are following the race.
00:39:14Pulls the field around as we have a look at the order.
00:39:16Pulse that are Frentzen, Mika Hakkinen, ahead of David
00:39:19Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher fourth, Fisichella, Penne, the
00:39:23top half dozen, Irvine from ninth to seventh, Villeneuve,
00:39:26Salo, Alessi, Barrichello, and Trulli, the top dozen.
00:39:31Oliver Gavin brings the safety car in, and we're back racing
00:39:34at the Nürburgring.
00:39:36Let's just hope those tires are up to temperature.
00:39:37That's the one thing that always worries me, is are the
00:39:39tires going to be back up to temperature?
00:39:45Six laps complete, and we hope to complete the first
00:39:47full one under green.
00:39:48Ho, ho, ho.
00:40:00Now we'll see just how team orders are going to operate in
00:40:02this situation, with the two McLarens there, nose to tail.
00:40:05I don't know, I think Ralf Schumacher looks
00:40:07good this weekend.
00:40:07He's done so well.
00:40:09They obviously have the super tech engines, like.
00:40:13He's still 60 horsepower.
00:40:15Down on those two cars in front of him, but it is his
00:40:17home circuit, and Ralf raced here all his life.
00:40:23We did see, during the break, Damon Hill walk from his car,
00:40:25and John across the track, and walk back up pit lane to the
00:40:31Jordan pit.
00:40:32No comment from the Jordan folks as to what might have
00:40:34happened to Damon's car.
00:40:36Certainly went very, very slowly indeed.
00:40:37Now we're going to just see, behind our friends, in leading
00:40:41a field.
00:40:42We haven't seen him lead like this in a dry condition, to my
00:40:45knowledge, this year.
00:40:46And there he is, out in front, and we're just going to see
00:40:48how he can take the pressure of these two cars behind.
00:40:50Generally speaking this year, we've made comments that
00:40:53behind Harold Frentzen's always been quite happily on
00:40:55his own in the middle of the field, just waiting for things
00:40:58to happen in front of him.
00:40:59But here he is, in front, and he deserves to be there.
00:41:03What was Mika Haakonen be thinking?
00:41:04Because now he is surrounded by championship contenders.
00:41:07Here's Frentzen right out front, 10 points back of him.
00:41:10Right on his tail was Coulthard, 12 points behind
00:41:12him, and Ralph Schumacher, who right now stands sixth in the
00:41:17Drivers' Championship.
00:41:18And Eddie Irvine, well back, though now at sixth place.
00:41:27Ralph Schumacher's staying with the McLarens at the
00:41:29moment, and that car of Eddie Jordan's car is slightly
00:41:33easing away with Heinz-Harold Frentzen at the wheel, as we
00:41:36ride with Ralph Schumacher.
00:41:40We'll have to wait and see.
00:41:51With understeer such a problem at the circuit, Derek, how do
00:41:53you take care of those tires?
00:41:55DEREK KAYER, JR.: Well that is the problem, is that because
00:41:56they've had such limited time in practice during the weekend
00:42:00to get the car set up in the dry, I think that is, they're
00:42:02just sort of just having a bit of a gamble at it.
00:42:04And of course, they've got the extra groove in the tire this
00:42:06year, so they can't use last year's set up at all.
00:42:09out on that very fast 180 mile an hour, up into the second hand chicane. See the old
00:42:13circuit used to go around a little bit faster, or somewhat faster. Fremsen on the fastest
00:42:19up at 123.1, remember they did 118s in practice. 199 he did in qualifying.
00:42:29The biggest beneficiary of that dust-up was John Lacey, who moved from 16th on the grid
00:42:34to 10th place. Irvine did a pretty good job too, he's up in 6th place. He must have got
00:42:41by one more in the last lap. Irvine, you can see in the back of the screen there, coming
00:42:45up behind one of the Benettons. Irvine got past Penney on this lap, and the report from
00:42:53the Jordan pit is that the electronic throttle for Damon Hill, electronic trouble, put his
00:43:00foot down, nothing there. You see, this is what gets him out of all this technology.
00:43:03It's wonderful when it works, he's given all these guys millions of dollars of work
00:43:07a year, and here we have, it just fails, and one bloke could have got killed because of
00:43:11this technology gone crazy, and it's such a pity. Here we go, this is Eddie overtaking
00:43:16Olivier Panis. Good bit of work there, Eddie. But that is a very slow corner, second gear
00:43:22corner, and one of the two opportunities you do have to overtake. And he made the most
00:43:27of it, but my goodness, he's got to go for it. You can see him at the back of your picture
00:43:30now. Irvine now closing in on Fisichello, there at the head of that second pack. France
00:43:40in the leader, Haakonen, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher. That's the front four, and then a gap. The
00:43:52Mugen Honda, this is the engine that's in the Jordan, obviously is built into it, starts
00:43:58from Japan, and they are supporting, obviously, the BAR team next year with the Works Honda
00:44:03engine, so it's going to be interesting to see just how much help this Jordan team will
00:44:08get next year from Mugen Honda, because they are doing such an amazing job this year. They
00:44:12have produced a little bit more power, a little bit more power all the time as the season
00:44:16has progressed. Irvine having a look here. He could get a little bit of momentum as he
00:44:21goes down into the Dunlop curve at the bottom. That's Fisichello just ahead. Irvine has a
00:44:29look on the left side. Oh, gets up there, not going to have enough room. Yes, he has
00:44:35got so much more power. Remember, Eddie did have a poor qualifying yesterday. He was second,
00:44:40third, quickest over the weekend. He's been running so well all weekend in the dry conditions.
00:44:44And, of course, as we've said just now, this engine, the Renault engine, based on the Mecachrome
00:44:50Supertech engine, is some many horsepower down on that Ferrari, so Irvine should get
00:44:56by. You know, we've talked about... And this is where he might. Sorry, under braking coming
00:44:59up here. Is he going to get by? At the end of the uphill straight. Has a look. Has a
00:45:06look, does he? No. You know, we've talked about Irvine having variable fortunes this
00:45:12season of being up and down, but he has the longest string of consecutive finishes in
00:45:16the points of any driver. The last ten races, he's scored in the points, Dirk. Yes, he really
00:45:21has, but Ferrari have had this astonishing reliability, which they had last year as well.
00:45:25They just keep turning in results, and that's what you need to do. Plus, they have tremendous
00:45:29pit strategy, do a wonderful job at that, and that pays off in the end. You get the
00:45:33results. Irvine's not been the tortoise, not by any means, with three victories and seven
00:45:39podium finishes. Mika Hakkinen has four wins, eight podium finishes, but those are the only
00:45:45finishes he has. No other points. So there's Eddie Irvine after 13 races in the season.
00:45:50Look at the difference this year to last. Astonishing difference. Absolutely astonishing
00:45:55difference. Looks on the outside. Nothing there at the corner entry. Tosses the nose
00:46:02just a bit on exit. Somehow you have to carry the extra momentum as you're going through
00:46:07this next section just so you can get by under braking. That's what you have to do, is carry
00:46:11the extra momentum to sort of launch yourself by the car in front. Now, is Eddie going to
00:46:17be able to do that? He should do with the extra power back there, that's what I don't
00:46:21understand. But he doesn't seem to get close enough. Whether it's the aerodynamic disturbance
00:46:25that we're getting in the fast corners, only he knows. Catches right up under braking the
00:46:31second gear Vito Chicane. Pretty big high curves through there. Gets a good exit, right
00:46:38on the tail of Fisichella coming out, but not a passing opportunity here. He can stay
00:46:41here because of the understeer that gets through that corner. He might get disturbed, might
00:46:45get disturbed behind the air and have to back off a little bit and get that extra bit of
00:46:48push he doesn't need. Things heating up up front. Oh, a spin. Two cars around. One is
00:46:54Zanardi and one of the Arrows. Everybody's going to get passed. Oh, he stalled it. Oh,
00:47:05what a shame. He did such a good job at Monza the other week. I mean, a super job, but for
00:47:13his problems with the body coming loose underneath, which meant that he had to back off, or should
00:47:17I say he just didn't have the stability to carry on at the high rate he was going. It
00:47:21sounded like you could hear the engine revving there, but it would not select a gear, Derek.
00:47:26I thought you could hear the engine revving as well. Well, here's your front four once
00:47:33again in Frenson. Now it's establishing a little bit of gap on Mika Hakkinen, David
00:47:37Coulthard, the two McLarens, and Ralph Schumacher. Looks like it might well be locked in a gear.
00:47:43Oh, yeah. Which means they can't push it. So it'll be a yellow at that corner. Here
00:47:47we go. And here's how it happened. Dear, oh, dear. Dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. The trouble
00:47:52is the guy on the outside in the Arrows did not realize that Zanardi was right on the
00:47:56inside and he pulled right across. And who was that trying to force their way down through
00:48:01the center? That was the other Arrows. Both the Arrows cars very, very close indeed. But
00:48:06you know, Alex shouldn't have been back with him. That's the point. But of course, with
00:48:09the chaos at the start, who knows? You get held up and you've seen it is difficult to
00:48:13get by. But the trouble is Ralph's at one end of the field doing a stunning job and
00:48:17Alex is not having a good run at the other end. But you do get held up by these other
00:48:22cars and you can't get by. Eddie Irvine continues his assault on fifth place. And Toa Fisichella
00:48:29in the Benetton, of whom we hoped would have a better season. Here is Alex Zanardi. You
00:48:34saw him walking away from his car, which appeared to be locked in gear after that spin. So Zanardi
00:48:42is out of the race, joining Damon Hill, Alexander Virts, and Pedro Diniz. You're watching Formula
00:48:48One, the Grand Prix of Europe on Fox Sportsnet. Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Europe.
00:48:56From the Nürburgring, Heinz-Harald Frentzen has led every lap with his mirrors full of
00:49:01the two McLaren Mercedes. Here's the best battle on the track, fifth place. Fisichella's
00:49:06Benetton trying to hold off Eddie Irvine. Keith Olbermann and Kevin Frazier bring you
00:49:10all the day's scores, highlights, and breaking stories nightly at 10 on Fox Sports News Prime
00:49:14Time. Check your local listing. Irvine has been everywhere but ahead of Fisichella. Yeah,
00:49:20he's done everything he can. He's been really scratching, doing everything he can. But it's
00:49:24really difficult. I'm staggered, of course, at the speed of this super-tech engine he's
00:49:29having over Irvine. But of course, the fact is the Ferrari and, of course, Stewart's are
00:49:35on the harder of the two soft tires. And therefore, they probably are a little slower at this
00:49:40point. But we'll come on later. There's Penney's seventh, Villeneuve's eighth. Here's a look
00:49:44at the top half dozen. Frenson, the leader for Jordan. The McLaren of Hockenheim. Third,
00:49:51the McLaren of Coulthard. In fourth, Williams of Al-Shulak. Fifth is Fisichella. In the
00:50:00Benetton. And sixth, Eddie Irvine's Ferrari. Eddie has a new car this weekend. He was complaining,
00:50:07of course, about the fact that his car maybe had a lot of twist. It had 6,000 miles on
00:50:11it. So, uh, there was talk about him having a new chassis for this weekend. Maybe it'll
00:50:16be a bit more rigid, they said. Hockenheim with a look. And just a look. Just a look.
00:50:22The way these guys brake, they brake so late. I mean, they brake from sort of like a hundred
00:50:26and, uh, 200 miles an hour down to 60 miles an hour in five seconds. I mean, that is such
00:50:31a short braking distance. And, of course, it's very difficult to come from two cars
00:50:35behind to one car in front. And Ralph Schumacher, Derek, having a great run right with the McLaren
00:50:45Mercedes at this point. But you've got to wonder if the McLarens are being held up by
00:50:50Frentzen at this stage of the race. You know, I would think you're right there. I mean,
00:50:55historically, we haven't seen the Jordan leading the McLarens at all in a dry situation, practice
00:51:00qualifying or anything. And I don't think in the best will in the world that Heinz-Hauer
00:51:03Frentzen expected to lead the race. But, of course, once you get in front, as I said,
00:51:07with these braking distances and the turbulence you get in a corner, it's very difficult.
00:51:10Here goes Eddie looking down the inside of Fisichella. No, he can't do it. Fisichella's
00:51:14on the dirt. This is Eddie's chance to go by and he does. Whoa. That was pretty brave
00:51:19to do that because Fisichella was going to come back and make it tight for him. It just
00:51:22shows you put the guy under pressure. Remember, Fisichella, of course, is an Italian and would
00:51:27dearly love to be driving a Ferrari for his home country. Fisichella's loss of momentum.
00:51:32Irvine made a bold move, as he is wont to do, to go to the outside, knowing Fisichella
00:51:37would come back on track and try to slice across in front of him. Very fast corner as
00:51:43well. Now we'll see Eddie catch up. The guys in front, I think, are slightly being held
00:51:48up by Heinz-Hauer Frentzen. It's rather the wrong word, but he certainly is spawning their
00:51:53game, one might say, and we'll see how quickly Eddie Irvine can catch up. And that'll be
00:51:57the proof of it. Last lap by, Irvine was 9.1 seconds off the lead. Now that he has
00:52:03gone by Fisichella, let's see how close he can get. Seventh, eighth, and ninth have closed
00:52:08up as well. Penney, Villeneuve, and Salah. So there it was, nine and a half seconds,
00:52:14excuse me, last time by. And we'll see if that changes now that Irvine is out in clean
00:52:20air. Looks like it might be raining out there. Where we are, it's pretty dry, but out there
00:52:25looks like there's some drizzle coming up, and if you look down towards the southwest,
00:52:28you can always see those clouds coming. This will make the race somewhat entertaining,
00:52:32I have to admit. Nürburgring, right on the top of the Eiffel Mountains, known for this
00:52:36sort of thing. Let's watch Eddie again. Fisichella tries to cut him off, but he's actually foiled
00:52:41by his own efforts, because he takes the wrong line in the corner on that very, very fast
00:52:45corner, and that lets Eddie through. He actually was hoisted by his own petard, as we say in
00:52:50Britain. Look at, look at, look at how he got Coulthard. There goes little Ralph down
00:52:55the inside. His younger brother Ralph going to make it. Very, very close indeed. Let's
00:52:59see what power he has out of here, but the McLaren must have the power on the straight.
00:53:02Just look at David Coulthard pull away. That shows the difference between those two engines.
00:53:07You might say it doesn't look like 80 horsepower to me, but it sure is close. David almost
00:53:12ran him down off the inside curb of the racetrack. Well, this is motor racing. This is Formula
00:53:19One. There's Ralph having another look. He's saying, come on, David, I want to get by,
00:53:22and I have to admire that young man in the car with that lack of horsepower. To me, he
00:53:26has been the equal in performance of Heinz our friend from this year in sort of being
00:53:31the driver of the year. I think he's done a stunning job when you consider that he does
00:53:34have a car with that lack of power. I would agree. Derek, I don't mind Coulthard running
00:53:39him down the inside of the racetrack when he was ahead of him, but Ralph was right clear
00:53:42alongside, and David still kept coming down and in, and there are the raindrops on the
00:53:46camera lens out of that part of the circuit. And pouring out there. Look at the rain streaming
00:53:53down. Now, these are groove tires, and no help to Fizzy. Sorry, there's Fizzy Keller.
00:53:59He's having a terrible time because obviously he's getting caught out by this moisture.
00:54:03He's trying very, very hard, and it's raining very heavily now. Yeah, now sprinkled in the
00:54:07pits as well. So they're going to have to come in for some tires very, very shortly.
00:54:13Unless they get standing water on the circuit. Now, again, we've talked about the groove
00:54:16tires that are required here in F1. It's the sharpness of the edge of the groove, not so
00:54:21much the depth. He's gone by, David. Yeah, Ralph's gone by this time. Well, he certainly
00:54:26was for a while there, but David's really hanging on. Come on, Ralph, you can do it.
00:54:31But Mika Hakkinen now, of course, is slowing them down. Mika is playing a very, very cautious
00:54:35game. Look at him. Now, David's being a bit naughty here, moving right across. Come on,
00:54:39Ralph, get him. He's going to get Hakkinen as well if we're not careful. Got him. He's
00:54:42got David there. Good for Ralph. Look at the crowd. The crowd are roaring with approval,
00:54:47seeing Ralph Schumacher go by. He's now going to get Mika at the next one. Come on, Ralph.
00:54:52Just don't push it. These McLarens, obviously, they're playing it very, very safe indeed,
00:54:56because for Mika Hakkinen, the World Championship is at stake. For Ralph, it doesn't really
00:55:00matter. He'd just like to win his home Grand Prix, or should I say the European Grand Prix
00:55:04at his home circuit. Olivier Penny is in the pits. But you see, it's not too damp all around
00:55:10the circuit. It's only in that, coming out of that pit area. Takagi is in the pits. May
00:55:15have stopped for directions. I'm sorry, that's an old Peter Easton off line from the Grand
00:55:20Prix of Gibraltar. Poor guy. He's working his heart out back there to do a good job.
00:55:26Here we go. This is the overtaking maneuver again. David Coulthard moving across to make
00:55:30it so tight for Ralph. Ralph doing a great job. He just keeps it in there. Very, very
00:55:37good. And then he has to control it down so he doesn't run over the back of Mika and
00:55:40go off the road, because he certainly had the wrong line. Very, very damp. Look, whoops.
00:55:45Very, very, and Heinz Hauer-Frentzen's off the road. But he's just kept it going. Very,
00:55:49very wet in this section. Up into the Coca-Cola curve to the back of the pits. And Mika Hakkinen
00:55:54going in for tires. I think it's Mika Hakkinen, possibly. He was still in the car in front.
00:55:58I think he probably was. He's going on. Heinz Hauer-Frentzen, meanwhile, we've seen him
00:56:03drive so brilliantly this year in wet conditions. So Hakkinen comes in. Is this going to be
00:56:10a good call or not? Is the rain sweeping down across? Usually, it comes in on the southwest
00:56:15corner down at the Dunlop curve area and then sweeps up across the top of the pits. This
00:56:20seems to have come from the north more. 8.1 second pit stop. Ferrari setting. Well, they're
00:56:26all setting up, really. They're all waiting for something to happen. Is this Irvine in?
00:56:30It's dry down at the bottom end. And you can see Salo's in the pits now. But of course,
00:56:38it can really destroy the tires if you get up there too soon. And look at this. See the
00:56:41different tread pattern on those wets that they run here. Long, long stop. What are they
00:56:46doing? Looks like they weren't prepared for Mika Salo to come in. They may have had the
00:56:49wrong tires out there. Just judging, they had tires there. And they went to put slicks
00:56:55on and then goofed up and made a change. Unlike Ferrari. But of course, panic does take over
00:57:02sometimes and we're sitting in the comfort of the booth and there they are, still having
00:57:06chaos. Oh, 36 seconds. And they had to replace the front wing on Mika Salo as well. 38 seconds.
00:57:14Well, just as well it was him and not Eddie Irvine that got through that. Now we're going
00:57:20to see by the lap times just how quick Mika Hakkinen is going to go on those wet tires.
00:57:26Remember, these tires do have, they are running the super, the extra soft slick tire, which
00:57:32means it would work somewhat better in these conditions. But of course, as you can see,
00:57:36Mika Salo, sorry, I'm sorry, behind Tyrell Frentzen is easing away there from.
00:57:42And Frentzen's been very smooth. Ralph Schumacher out of that last corner, Derek, nearly threw
00:57:46the car away three different times and got it back. Now here's Irvine.
00:57:50If you have to assess how much the track is actually under wet conditions and how much
00:57:56dry and what the majority of the corners are, are they in the wet as opposed to the dry?
00:58:00Carl, where's the other wheel? My goodness, what are they doing? Are they still fitting
00:58:04them out the back? Hello? What are they doing? I can't believe it. What a Ferrari up to today.
00:58:10They should have the tires right there. They're putting, they're not putting wet tires on.
00:58:13They don't know what they're doing. They're putting a dry tire on.
00:58:17Oh, Irvine got four new dry tires.
00:58:20Dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. In 28 seconds.
00:58:25Talk about a championship nobody wants to win.
00:58:2836 seconds for one and 28 seconds for the other.
00:58:34That's horrible.
00:58:37We just had some very, some news. Pedredenitz is stable and is conscious.
00:58:41Well, that's good. But he certainly had a fair old accident back there.
00:58:45Bouncing down that grass without the road foul on the back of his head.
00:58:48Kind, kind of friends, and you've just got to, see, this is where friends in sports car experience
00:58:52could well pay off. Having said that, you'll probably go off in the next corner.
00:58:55But look how wet it is as they come into the chicane.
00:58:58Ralph sliding out very wide, has to take the grass.
00:59:01Just hope you don't damage any of that, your under tray or your spoilers on the front.
00:59:05No, the wings are undamaged. He carries on.
00:59:08We'll talk about variable conditions. The front half of the circuit is dry.
00:59:12The back half of the circuit is pouring rain.
00:59:15Well, that is the Nürburgring. But you can imagine what it's like when we're on the 14-mile track
00:59:18when we're out there with 176 corners. It's been raining in four different places.
00:59:25Mika Hakkinen is going to find it pretty bad on those, on the dry conditions.
00:59:29He's certainly going to overheat those tires very quickly if he's not careful.
00:59:34But what a choice to have to make. Do you risk overheating your wet tires?
00:59:39Or do you risk sliding off in the rain on your dry tires?
00:59:42That's what's facing us right now, 23 laps in to the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
00:59:50And it looks like Ferrari may be back in, Derek.
00:59:53Well, Mika Hakkinen's last lap was some 20 seconds slower than the guys that were running around on the dry tires.
01:00:00And when you get this very big instability when you run a wet tire in the dry,
01:00:05the car really, really gets out of shape under braking.
01:00:09It's like you're running on jelly, a horrible, horrible feeling. It doesn't want to point at all.
01:00:12Alright, Ferrari set up, but apparently it was just for drill.
01:00:15It might have been just to see if they could actually carry four tires out to the pit lane and have them in position.
01:00:19Well, they should try getting the tires out there to start with.
01:00:21Yes.
01:00:22I would have thought they'd be right there.
01:00:23But they've put back away.
01:00:25So, Hyde's Harold Frentzen leads Ralph Schumacher, a Jordan and a Williams,
01:00:30leading the Grand Prix of Europe.
01:00:32It's been a stranger day, and it's likely to get stranger yet.
01:00:35Stay with us. You're watching Formula 1 on Fox Sportsnet.
01:00:4026 of 66 laps complete in the Grand Prix of Europe.
01:00:43Hyde's Harold Frentzen has led them all, but he has a strong challenge from Ralph Schumacher and David Coulthard.
01:00:49While we were away, Mika Salo and Mika Hakkinen pitted for dry tires.
01:00:54After losing a lot of time, Hakkinen on the racetrack and Salo in the pits and on the racetrack
01:00:59with the switch over to the wet tires.
01:01:02Well, Mika Hakkinen is 1 minute 46 seconds behind the leader at this time.
01:01:05I mean, he made such a bad error.
01:01:07He's obviously so cautious about losing the World Championship that he's not thinking about winning it.
01:01:13And that's such a pity.
01:01:14And here they are pitting.
01:01:15Looks like they're pitting, getting ready for Ralph Schumacher,
01:01:17who's doing such a splendid job behind Hyde's Harold Frentzen,
01:01:19slithering around in these damp conditions.
01:01:21Here are the first three.
01:01:22Ralph goes in.
01:01:23David Coulthard, of course, immediately behind.
01:01:25As Ralph comes in the pit lane.
01:01:28It's going to be pretty damp too in the pit lane.
01:01:32He's on the harder of the soft compounds,
01:01:35as is everybody but the Ferraris and, of course, the Stuarts.
01:01:46It was a good time to have a new, nice hot, new, sort of quite sharp,
01:01:51grooved dry tire to go at when the track is damp in certain places,
01:01:55cut through that moisture.
01:01:58Mika Hakkinen having a disaster back there.
01:02:00Way, way down the field.
01:02:03Guys posted in 14th place.
01:02:051 minute 46 behind.
01:02:07Irvine's 1 minute 25 behind.
01:02:09So neither of the main contenders doing that well.
01:02:12And here we have Hyde's Harold Frentzen and David Coulthard,
01:02:15who are third and fourth in the championship, doing a splendid job.
01:02:19And that'll just tighten things further.
01:02:22As we hear from Malaysia and Japan.
01:02:23Yes, I'm sorry.
01:02:24I mean, as soon as Mika came in, as soon as it started to get damp,
01:02:27he went in because he's nervous about losing it.
01:02:29He was so conservative.
01:02:30You could see he was almost getting...
01:02:31Well, he did get overtaken.
01:02:33And he was so conservative about it.
01:02:35Of course, went in, put the wet tires on.
01:02:37It didn't work.
01:02:38No, in one lap, he lost, what, 17 seconds in one lap?
01:02:41Yep.
01:02:42A ton of time.
01:02:43He must have had a moment off the road, of course, to do that.
01:02:45There is a lot of time.
01:02:46You see the wet on the outside.
01:02:48The thing about these fellas is that they keep the cars
01:02:51on such a perfect line through the corner.
01:02:53If they come in too fast, just grab a wheel in the moisture,
01:02:56and, of course, that's it.
01:02:57They slide out of control.
01:02:59So now, 28 laps complete.
01:03:01Coulthard within striking distance of Frentzen.
01:03:03They are just two points apart in the Drivers' Championship,
01:03:07though Frentzen is 10 points behind HÃ¥konen and Irvine.
01:03:11This could really tighten things with just two races remaining.
01:03:16And they are 13 seconds ahead, well, 14 now, ahead of Fizzi Keller.
01:03:19Ralf Schumacher 22 seconds down.
01:03:23And Rubens Barrichello has now climbed to the fifth spot.
01:03:25For Stewart, Ford, Jarno Trulli to sixth.
01:03:33There's a look at the points as they stand.
01:03:36With your third place point man leading
01:03:38and fourth place in the points in second place.
01:03:42Across the pit stop.
01:03:4575 mile-an-hour speed limit in the pit lane,
01:03:47which means they can get in and out of the pits pretty quickly.
01:03:56But it does dry quickly.
01:03:58It certainly does dry generally in the early part of the year.
01:04:02It doesn't dry for hours.
01:04:03Of course, being the latter part of the year,
01:04:05the atmosphere is somewhat warmer
01:04:06and the ground is a little bit warmer.
01:04:08And it allows it to dry that bit quicker.
01:04:10That was Jarno Trulli pitting for Kroost
01:04:12and John Lacey was in as well.
01:04:16For Sauber.
01:04:18The pit stop strategy is exactly the same as David Coulthard's.
01:04:22That means the one-legged race.
01:04:48I mean, this is really impressive stuff.
01:04:50Mika Hakkinen must be sort of wondering
01:04:52just what is happening to him.
01:04:55Well, who would have figured that
01:04:56a third of the way into the race,
01:04:58Mika Hakkinen, your world champion,
01:05:00your co-leader in the points,
01:05:01would be running a lap behind due to a bad choice.
01:05:04Yeah, total bad choice.
01:05:08This is where the advantage someone like Frenzel had
01:05:11because of his sports car experience.
01:05:13Remember, he used to race the Mercedes sports cars,
01:05:15I raced against him quite a lot.
01:05:17And Michael Schumacher raced the Mercedes team.
01:05:20And when you get these conditions,
01:05:21you just have to sit it out.
01:05:23You keep your eye on the sky.
01:05:24Oh, look at him get it sideways,
01:05:26straight across the ground.
01:05:27Oh, he went down the other circuit.
01:05:29He went down the...
01:05:30That is quite a good way through, of course.
01:05:31Yeah, yeah.
01:05:32I don't know if you get penalized for that,
01:05:34but it was pretty good stuff
01:05:36because he didn't even take to the grass.
01:05:37David might complain about that.
01:05:42It shows you it's still wet out there, Mike.
01:05:44It's not as if he gained a position,
01:05:46but certainly had he tried to make the chicane,
01:05:48he would have lost one there to David.
01:05:53Eddie Jordan, well, looks pretty satisfied so far,
01:05:56although his Damon Hill is out of the race.
01:05:58I had several friends in leading
01:06:00and trying to bring himself into contention,
01:06:02a closer contention for this Drivers' Championship.
01:06:07Of course, David could get out there and win this Grand Prix,
01:06:09and that would really put the cat among the pigeons
01:06:11because right now that...
01:06:12Oh, look...
01:06:13It does look like that Mika is out of the contention
01:06:17at the moment,
01:06:18even to maybe get too many points in this race.
01:06:23I mean, we're halfway through the race
01:06:24and Mika is one minute,
01:06:26some one minute, oh, 24 behind.
01:06:29That's quite a long way.
01:06:30One minute 25 now.
01:06:32That's a long way behind.
01:06:35HÃ¥konen, a lap off the pace.
01:06:38He came in, changed to wet tires,
01:06:40went back out and found them to be far slower
01:06:43than the dry tires
01:06:45that most of the rest of the field was using.
01:06:47Mika Sala was also in on wets.
01:06:49Eddie Irvine lost a ton of time in the pits
01:06:51when he and the Ferrari team
01:06:53could not agree which tires to put on the car.
01:06:55They eventually made the right choice.
01:06:57They put dry tires on Irvine,
01:06:58but it took them 37 seconds to figure that out.
01:07:11Watching the lead battle,
01:07:13Frentzen and Coulthard.
01:07:14It's another...
01:07:15It's a total of 17 seconds
01:07:17from Frentzen back to Fisichella.
01:07:20Yes, they're pulling away.
01:07:21They pulled away a second a lap
01:07:23from Fisichella at the moment,
01:07:24but of course, here we go.
01:07:25Busy overtaking Mika Häkkinen
01:07:27some two laps ago
01:07:28as they go by the pits.
01:07:30Good piece of work, Giancarlo.
01:07:32Super piece of work.
01:07:33Bit of a twitch as he goes to turn in.
01:07:35Gets a bit of a slip there,
01:07:36but that's it.
01:07:37He's then got the line just right
01:07:39for that second part.
01:07:41Well, it has to make you wonder, Derek.
01:07:43Now, is Häkkinen's car,
01:07:44is it that far off?
01:07:45Is he in trouble?
01:07:46Or was he merely obeying the blue flag?
01:07:49I don't know.
01:07:50I think Mika sometimes, you know,
01:07:51his mind just gets fumbled
01:07:53or scrambled even.
01:07:54I just think he starts to upset himself so much.
01:07:57See, look how much he's dropped back.
01:07:59I mean, he's dropped back a long way.
01:08:01They must be setting up,
01:08:02I would have thought,
01:08:03McLaren must be setting up
01:08:04for David Coulthard at any time.
01:08:06Well, Jordan and McLaren.
01:08:07Activity in the pit lane.
01:08:09Well, you've got Ralph.
01:08:10Who's that behind there?
01:08:12One of the arrows?
01:08:13One of the arrows.
01:08:14Looked like he was going to have it,
01:08:15but I think it was Mika getting by him.
01:08:17That was Takagi.
01:08:18All right, first and second place
01:08:19are in the pits.
01:08:20Frentzen and Coulthard
01:08:22coming in the pit lane.
01:08:25You can see that water.
01:08:26Here we go.
01:08:27You've just got to keep off
01:08:28those white lines next to the corner.
01:08:30Water does not permeate white lines.
01:08:32No.
01:08:33Now, they've got the right tyres
01:08:34for these guys.
01:08:35No mistakes here.
01:08:37Now, who can get out first?
01:08:38That's what matters.
01:08:39Come on, let's see who's got
01:08:40the best pit stop.
01:08:41Great start by Jordan,
01:08:42but they're behind.
01:08:43Are they behind?
01:08:44Yes, they're just popped out
01:08:45in front of Coulthard.
01:08:46Good stop there.
01:08:48And now, Fisichella's come in as well,
01:08:50the third place car.
01:08:51Also coming in at lap 32.
01:08:54And they go out, I think,
01:08:55just ahead of Mika Hakkinen,
01:08:56who, of course, is one lap behind.
01:08:59So, one whole lap behind.
01:09:02And Frentzen has stalled
01:09:04out on the circuit.
01:09:05Frentzen.
01:09:06Something must have...
01:09:07Yeah, something must have
01:09:08really gone wrong there.
01:09:09That leaves David Coulthard
01:09:10in the lead, and Mika Hakkinen
01:09:11behind, and Mika one lap behind.
01:09:13Oh, Eddie must be going,
01:09:14I don't know what is happening here.
01:09:16Why should that happen?
01:09:18Look at the frustration
01:09:19in his face.
01:09:20Just think how Heinz Auerfeld
01:09:21in the European Grand Prix
01:09:22at the Nürburgring.
01:09:23Ten wonderful points
01:09:25that could have made
01:09:26such a difference
01:09:27in this World Championship.
01:09:28And, Derek, at the same point
01:09:29on the circuit
01:09:30where Damon Hill's car
01:09:32would not take throttle.
01:09:33Absolutely.
01:09:34Damon was on the inside
01:09:35of the corner, and Heinz Auerfeld
01:09:36was on the outside of the corner.
01:09:38Well, the old racing adage
01:09:39to finish first,
01:09:40you must first finish,
01:09:41has really bit
01:09:42Eddie Jordan's team today.
01:09:43But it's only the third
01:09:44non-finish in 14 races.
01:09:46That's pretty darn impressive.
01:09:47That's as good as anybody
01:09:48out there.
01:09:49Very, very impressive indeed.
01:09:51That leaves David Coulthard.
01:09:53One whole lap,
01:09:54and a few seconds.
01:09:55Here he goes,
01:09:56watching Heinz Auerfeld
01:09:57just slow right down.
01:09:58Suddenly, something
01:09:59did not work.
01:10:01Make sure...
01:10:02It doesn't look like
01:10:03it was a gear selection to me.
01:10:04It just totally stopped.
01:10:07Oh dear, oh dear.
01:10:08He goes,
01:10:09I don't believe it.
01:10:13Now, as we mentioned,
01:10:14Fisichella had made a pit stop
01:10:15during all this.
01:10:16He went into the pits
01:10:17in third place.
01:10:19And there's Frentzen
01:10:20being towed away.
01:10:21Could this also be
01:10:22a throttle problem?
01:10:23He comes out in second,
01:10:24let me tell you,
01:10:25does Fisichella.
01:10:32Look at him,
01:10:33he's trying to see
01:10:34what the problem is.
01:10:35They look like
01:10:36something's jammed up.
01:10:37The wheels are turning
01:10:38in the opposite direction.
01:10:40So, Ralf Schumacher
01:10:41has taken over second
01:10:43with the pit stop
01:10:44from Fisichella.
01:10:45So, it's Coulthard,
01:10:46Ralf Schumacher,
01:10:47and Fisichella,
01:10:48we're told.
01:10:49Boy, things change quickly
01:10:50here at the Nürburgring.
01:10:52We'll be right back.
01:10:56Welcome back
01:10:57to the Nürburgring,
01:10:58where it's now raining
01:10:59all the way around the circuit,
01:11:00and a lot of pit stops
01:11:01are being made.
01:11:04Some for new dry tires,
01:11:06and some for wet.
01:11:10October 17th, Sunday,
01:11:12Grand Prix of Malaysia,
01:11:14the penultimate round
01:11:15of the World Championship.
01:11:16We will be there,
01:11:17and check your local listing
01:11:19for air times.
01:11:20Sunday, October 17th
01:11:22on Fox Sports Network.
01:11:25David Coulthard's staying out.
01:11:30Well, he is leading
01:11:31because Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:11:32has apparently suffered
01:11:34the same fate
01:11:36as Jean Alessi pulls off.
01:11:39Jean got his wet tires on, too.
01:11:41He must have just gone in
01:11:42and got those.
01:11:43And David Coulthard's
01:11:44hanging out there
01:11:45in these wet conditions.
01:11:49Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:11:50may have suffered
01:11:51the same fate as Damon Hill.
01:11:53Coming out of the pits
01:11:54at just about the same spot,
01:11:57Frentzen's Jordan
01:11:58loses power
01:11:59and posts off the racetrack.
01:12:02It did look so similar
01:12:03to Damon's problem,
01:12:04one has to admit.
01:12:05In the same corner,
01:12:06same thing.
01:12:07There's no reason
01:12:08it should happen
01:12:09in the same corner, of course.
01:12:10But look at Coulthard.
01:12:11What a great job he's doing
01:12:12in these conditions
01:12:13as Takagi loses it.
01:12:15As he comes through
01:12:16the Vidal chicane.
01:12:18Very easily done
01:12:19in these conditions.
01:12:20A couple laps ago,
01:12:21Mika Salo spun,
01:12:22but he was also able
01:12:23to continue.
01:12:25Coulthard actually pulled away
01:12:26three seconds
01:12:27on Ralf Schumacher.
01:12:28Barry Kello
01:12:29back in fourth place
01:12:30and Fizzi Keller.
01:12:31Barry Kello
01:12:32in third place
01:12:33and Fizzi Keller in fourth.
01:12:34Ralf Schumacher, though,
01:12:35has just had
01:12:36the most tremendously
01:12:37entertaining drive.
01:12:38He has been sliding that car
01:12:39all around the circuit.
01:12:40I can't believe
01:12:41how Coulthard is doing
01:12:42such a magnificent job
01:12:43in these wet conditions
01:12:44on dry tires.
01:12:47Lead of 9.1 seconds
01:12:48the last time by.
01:12:51And obviously,
01:12:52they will be giving him
01:12:53the lap times
01:12:54of everybody around him.
01:12:55And he'll be getting
01:12:56all that information
01:12:57into his head
01:12:58all the way around the circuit.
01:12:59And as soon as he can see
01:13:00himself dropping back,
01:13:01all the guys behind
01:13:02going for wets,
01:13:03he will.
01:13:04And the people behind him
01:13:05are hanging in there
01:13:06saying,
01:13:07well, if he's going to
01:13:08stay out,
01:13:09I'll stay out.
01:13:10And we get this scenario
01:13:11as you can imagine
01:13:12in sports car racing
01:13:13when the conditions
01:13:14change so much
01:13:15in a six-hour race.
01:13:16And you see now
01:13:17all around the circuit
01:13:18rooster tails of water
01:13:19being kicked up.
01:13:20You have to be
01:13:21so gentle
01:13:22with your braking.
01:13:23You cannot
01:13:24brake too fiercely
01:13:25because you're going
01:13:26to lock a wheel up.
01:13:27Ralf Schumacher
01:13:28coming down there
01:13:29and going
01:13:30quite as viciously
01:13:31as he was before.
01:13:32Is that Villeneuve?
01:13:33Is that Villeneuve?
01:13:34That's Zonta.
01:13:35No, it's not.
01:13:36Ricardo Zonta.
01:13:37Oh!
01:13:38That is what
01:13:39he should have done.
01:13:40He should have come
01:13:41in the pits.
01:13:42And he should have
01:13:43changed those tyres.
01:13:44I'm sorry about that.
01:13:45Good grief.
01:13:46Nobody wants
01:13:47to win this race.
01:13:48That leaves
01:13:49Ralf Schumacher
01:13:50in the lead.
01:13:51Now, a good time
01:13:52for Ralf to go in
01:13:53and put those wets on,
01:13:54I would say.
01:13:55And Rubens Barrichello
01:13:56is 20-odd seconds behind.
01:13:57He's still on drys.
01:13:58He's gone in
01:13:59to put some wets on.
01:14:00David,
01:14:01that is a
01:14:02sad situation
01:14:03but that's reality.
01:14:04Look at him.
01:14:05He gets out wide.
01:14:06No way is he going to stop.
01:14:07Tries to steer it around
01:14:08but in he goes.
01:14:09Ooh, doesn't quite make it.
01:14:10No, you can't.
01:14:11Oh, dear.
01:14:12Actually, he almost
01:14:13could have kept...
01:14:14Look at that.
01:14:15Oh, my goodness.
01:14:16He just stops.
01:14:17You'd have thought
01:14:18he could have
01:14:19got out of there.
01:14:20Norbert Haag
01:14:21not at all happy.
01:14:22There isn't going to be
01:14:23a Mercedes victory today
01:14:24unless, of course,
01:14:25Hakkinen, who's in
01:14:2611th place,
01:14:27does something
01:14:28pretty outstanding.
01:14:29Well, now,
01:14:30never say never, Derek,
01:14:31because everybody
01:14:32that's had the lead
01:14:33has managed to
01:14:34throw it away
01:14:35due to either
01:14:36mechanical problems
01:14:37or lack of grip.
01:14:38Now, I...
01:14:39I did say before
01:14:40this race
01:14:41I put my money
01:14:42on Ralph Schumacher.
01:14:43Yes, you did.
01:14:44I'll have to...
01:14:45And I'm sorry about that.
01:14:46I'll have to back you there.
01:14:47I must admit,
01:14:48it is home Grand Prix
01:14:49if that's the right word
01:14:50to see that young man
01:14:51go well.
01:14:52Fizzi Keller, of course,
01:14:53doing a superb job
01:14:54in second place.
01:14:55Now, of course,
01:14:56he's in
01:14:57all some wet tires.
01:14:59Well, after the
01:15:00very wet French Grand Prix,
01:15:01which friendsome one,
01:15:03there was some sentiment
01:15:04for Bernie putting
01:15:05sprinklers around
01:15:06at various corners
01:15:07on all the Grand Prix circuits
01:15:08because the race was...
01:15:09What in surprises, you mean?
01:15:10You just stick them out there
01:15:11when you need them.
01:15:12Well, why not?
01:15:13Yeah, let's spray some water here.
01:15:15That's Mika Hakkinen, of course,
01:15:16the one remaining McLaren
01:15:17in the race
01:15:18who's way down there
01:15:19in 11th place,
01:15:201 minute 44 behind.
01:15:27Fizzi Keller is the only
01:15:28Benetton in the race
01:15:29having had...
01:15:30Berts got involved
01:15:31in that first lap...
01:15:32first corner shambles
01:15:33there when
01:15:34Pedro Liniz ended up
01:15:35flicking over
01:15:36upside down
01:15:37and charging away
01:15:38the hospital
01:15:39with a little bit of...
01:15:40I would say a little bit
01:15:41of neck soreness
01:15:42to him somehow,
01:15:43but he's conscious
01:15:44and stable.
01:15:45And Rubens Barrichello
01:15:46has climbed the ladder now
01:15:47up to 4th position.
01:15:49He's done very well
01:15:50when you consider
01:15:51where he started
01:15:52on the grid in 12th
01:15:53at the beginning of the race.
01:15:54Superb...
01:15:55I'm sorry,
01:15:56he was even further...
01:15:57he was in 15th.
01:15:58I thought he was further down.
01:15:59He was 15th in polycon.
01:16:00And who's coming
01:16:01right along up the ladder
01:16:02with him but
01:16:03teammate Johnny Herbert.
01:16:04Herbert is up in the points.
01:16:07Ralph Schumacher
01:16:08still out there
01:16:09on those dry tyres.
01:16:10Of course,
01:16:11it does appear to have
01:16:12stopped raining
01:16:13on certain areas
01:16:14of the track.
01:16:15Look how wet it is.
01:16:16This is where you have
01:16:17to be careful
01:16:18under very high speed braking.
01:16:20Slipped right down, Ralph.
01:16:21You've got to have
01:16:22so much sensitivity
01:16:23in the wet
01:16:24to keep that car on the road.
01:16:25And this is where
01:16:26his brother, Michael,
01:16:27was such a star.
01:16:28Or is such a star.
01:16:29Except he's not here today.
01:16:30Now, Ralph,
01:16:31last time past,
01:16:32had a 19 second lead
01:16:33on Fisichello.
01:16:35And, uh...
01:16:37Johnny Herbert
01:16:38now posted 3rd.
01:16:40Did a very quick lap.
01:16:41He was come
01:16:42several seconds quicker.
01:16:435 seconds a lap quicker
01:16:44on the wets.
01:16:45But, of course,
01:16:46you've got to consider
01:16:47the fact that it
01:16:48may well dry out.
01:16:49In which case,
01:16:50Herbert will have to go
01:16:51in and change tyres
01:16:52back to dry again.
01:16:53Barrichello
01:16:54now shown 4th
01:16:55with some 14 seconds
01:16:56behind Herbert.
01:16:58And Schumacher
01:16:59doing the same times
01:17:00as Fisichello
01:17:01as we speak.
01:17:02Uh, Jarno
01:17:03truly now 5th
01:17:04and Jacques Villeneuve
01:17:056th.
01:17:06Eddie Irvine
01:17:07despite, uh,
01:17:08a horrible day
01:17:09in the pits for Ferrari
01:17:11is now up to 7th
01:17:12and...
01:17:14Oh, my heart.
01:17:15Marc Genet
01:17:16and Luca Badua
01:17:17are 8th and 9th.
01:17:19Minardi
01:17:21has climbed
01:17:22to the top 10
01:17:23with both cars.
01:17:26You could have got
01:17:27long odds on that
01:17:28at the top of the day.
01:17:30But good for that.
01:17:31Good. I mean, good for that.
01:17:32It's great for Minardi.
01:17:33They've said
01:17:34we're off the back row
01:17:35of the grid
01:17:36because we pushed
01:17:37arrows to the back.
01:17:38Great for Minardi.
01:17:39There's still
01:17:40the talk of this
01:17:41telephonica
01:17:42and buy out
01:17:43buying out
01:17:44the team
01:17:45or sponsoring the team
01:17:46to a major degree
01:17:47by buying it out.
01:17:48But they're
01:17:49somehow withholding
01:17:50their rights
01:17:51and...
01:17:53Well, let's have a look
01:17:54at how this
01:17:55very strange day
01:17:56has affected
01:17:57the driver championship.
01:17:58That's how the points
01:17:59were coming
01:18:00into this race.
01:18:05And right now
01:18:06of the top 6,
01:18:07only 3 of them
01:18:08are still
01:18:09in the race.
01:18:10Ralf Schumacher
01:18:11leading,
01:18:12Irvine back in 8th
01:18:13and HÃ¥konen
01:18:14back in 11th.
01:18:15So, of the first
01:18:166 drivers
01:18:17in the world championship,
01:18:18only Ralf Schumacher
01:18:19is in a position
01:18:20to score any points
01:18:21today.
01:18:24Quite amazing,
01:18:25couldn't believe that.
01:18:26He said at the beginning
01:18:27not a race,
01:18:28normally a race of attrition
01:18:29but it certainly is
01:18:30and it's teeming
01:18:31down with rain again.
01:18:33Now, of course,
01:18:34we've got the situation
01:18:35where we're going to
01:18:36have to look,
01:18:37are we going to go in
01:18:38Ralf Schumacher
01:18:39and change those
01:18:40tires or are we?
01:18:41I think the best
01:18:42analogy to be made
01:18:43for folks at home
01:18:44is winter driving.
01:18:45You're driving
01:18:46on dry pavement,
01:18:47suddenly you're driving
01:18:48on slippery or icy
01:18:49when you get back
01:18:50to the dry pavement
01:18:51how hard do you push?
01:18:52When you get to
01:18:53a patch of road
01:18:54that looks wet
01:18:55is it wet
01:18:56or is it ice
01:18:57and how fast
01:18:58can you go?
01:19:00Take your speeds,
01:19:01multiply them times
01:19:02a factor of 4,
01:19:03add the risk factor in
01:19:04and you have
01:19:05a rough idea
01:19:06of what these drivers
01:19:07are facing right now
01:19:08because the conditions
01:19:09are in the wet portions
01:19:10of the track
01:19:11extremely treacherous.
01:19:14Well, Ralf, of course,
01:19:15has not been in
01:19:16for those wet tires,
01:19:17he's losing like
01:19:182 seconds a lap
01:19:19or 3 seconds a lap
01:19:20to the two
01:19:21Fords.
01:19:22Ferrari getting,
01:19:23I think,
01:19:24ready for Eddie Irvine.
01:19:28Irvine in
01:19:297th place,
01:19:30he is
01:19:315 seconds
01:19:32out of 6th
01:19:33that's where
01:19:34Jacques Villeneuve
01:19:35and the 6th.
01:19:36Let's not forget
01:19:37he is also on
01:19:38the dry tires,
01:19:39he hasn't been in
01:19:40for the wet yet
01:19:41so here he comes.
01:19:42Pollywise move
01:19:43with not too many
01:19:44laps to go.
01:19:4523, was it?
01:19:4623 laps to go.
01:19:49And they've got
01:19:50the right tires this time.
01:19:51They're ready for him.
01:19:56Eddie could have been
01:19:57in really strong contention
01:19:58if Ferrari hadn't made
01:19:59that 30 second pit stop
01:20:00for him.
01:20:01These are the wet tires.
01:20:05That's a good stop.
01:20:06Don't let him go, man.
01:20:07Don't let him hold him
01:20:08any longer.
01:20:09Good.
01:20:10Let's see what Eddie can do.
01:20:11He was in 7th position.
01:20:15And that should move
01:20:16Marc Genet up
01:20:17to 7th position.
01:20:18He may come out
01:20:20in front of Luca Battaglia.
01:20:21No, perhaps not.
01:20:22Perhaps
01:20:23as far back as 9th.
01:20:26Fisichella.
01:20:28So Irvine may have
01:20:29rejoined the race
01:20:30in 9th place.
01:20:39So Ralf Schumacher
01:20:40leads at the Nürburgring
01:20:41some 17 seconds
01:20:42ahead of Fisichella,
01:20:44Johnny Herbert,
01:20:45Jarno Trulli,
01:20:46Rubens Barrichello
01:20:47and Jacques Villeneuve.
01:20:49We'll be right back.
01:20:52Welcome back to
01:20:53Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:20:54of the Grand Prix of Europe
01:20:55where now Ralf Schumacher
01:20:56leads Giancarlo Fisichella
01:20:58by 24 seconds.
01:21:00Fisichella battling
01:21:01with Johnny Herbert
01:21:02for that 2nd position.
01:21:03Jarno Trulli 4th,
01:21:04Rubens Barrichello 5th,
01:21:06Jacques Villeneuve 6th.
01:21:08And here a shot
01:21:09just a second ago,
01:21:10a few seconds ago
01:21:11of Giancarlo Fisichella
01:21:13coming into the chicane.
01:21:14Whoops.
01:21:15Overcooks it as he goes in,
01:21:17across the kerb
01:21:18and he does an amazing job
01:21:20and amazingly fortunate
01:21:21that there's a big
01:21:22runoff area there.
01:21:23He somehow keeps those wheels
01:21:24facing in the right direction.
01:21:26He's going to get really dirty,
01:21:27gets it back on the road
01:21:28but he gets right in the
01:21:29clutches of Johnny Herbert
01:21:30who of course is on wet tyres
01:21:32right behind him.
01:21:33Herbert doing a magnificent job
01:21:34Trulli of course
01:21:35popping up into 4th
01:21:36ahead of Barrichello
01:21:37and Jacques Villeneuve
01:21:38doing a super job there
01:21:39in 6th place.
01:21:40And here's the leader
01:21:41in the pit.
01:21:42Here's Ralf going in the pits now.
01:21:43Is he going to put wets on
01:21:44at this point?
01:21:45The sun is all over the place,
01:21:46all over the track.
01:21:48Well he's certainly been
01:21:49the best today
01:21:50at finding the edge
01:21:51in these extremely
01:21:52variable conditions.
01:21:53And he's been lapping
01:21:54the same laps
01:21:55as everybody else.
01:21:56There isn't a great advantage
01:21:57of him changing to wet snow.
01:21:58He's going back onto slicks
01:21:59yet again.
01:22:00Wise choice, Ralf.
01:22:01He's doing a super job here.
01:22:02One mustn't forget
01:22:03of course
01:22:04that Ralf
01:22:05lives in this area.
01:22:06He knows the Nürburgring.
01:22:07If anybody knows
01:22:08what to look for,
01:22:09where to look for the weather,
01:22:10it's him.
01:22:11And a lot of us guys
01:22:12that have raced there
01:22:13know where to look
01:22:14for this lousy weather.
01:22:15Well he had a 24 second lead
01:22:17when he came in.
01:22:18He's coming out between
01:22:19just behind Johnny Herbert.
01:22:21Or ahead of Johnny Herbert?
01:22:22No, behind Johnny Herbert.
01:22:26So he's back out in third.
01:22:27Giancarlo Fisichella,
01:22:28despite a spin off the track,
01:22:30is the leader.
01:22:31Johnny Herbert,
01:22:32the white car,
01:22:33the steward Ford,
01:22:34in second.
01:22:35And now Ralf Schumacher
01:22:36in third.
01:22:37Jarno Trulli,
01:22:38Barrichello,
01:22:39Villeneuve,
01:22:40and then the minority,
01:22:41Luca Badour
01:22:42in seventh.
01:22:43Eddie Irvine
01:22:44has just passed Marc Genet
01:22:45for eighth.
01:22:46Zonta in ninth,
01:22:47and Mika Hakkinen
01:22:48is tenth.
01:22:50Ralf really getting to it.
01:22:52You saw Herbert
01:22:53driving to keep his car,
01:22:55his Ford,
01:22:56in the wet line.
01:22:57On the wet line
01:22:58to keep those wet tires cool.
01:22:59He doesn't want to burn off
01:23:00that rubber
01:23:01by keeping it too dry.
01:23:02But look at the grip
01:23:04that that Ford has
01:23:05in the wet.
01:23:06My goodness me,
01:23:07he has some grip
01:23:08on those wet tires.
01:23:09He can be so much braver.
01:23:10A wonderful race
01:23:11by Johnny Herbert.
01:23:14He was asked
01:23:15recently in a magazine article,
01:23:17what do people
01:23:18most misunderstand
01:23:19about you?
01:23:20And he goes,
01:23:21that I'm retiring.
01:23:22He says, I'm not.
01:23:23Oh, look!
01:23:24There's Takagi.
01:23:25Oh, Takagi's gone again.
01:23:27I do get criticized
01:23:28for being critical of him,
01:23:29but he does make
01:23:30some pretty crude errors,
01:23:31I have to admit.
01:23:32Look at that wheel.
01:23:33That could be dangerous
01:23:34if it runs down that curb
01:23:35out on the road.
01:23:37And he was right in the midst
01:23:38of that lead battle
01:23:39being overlapped.
01:23:41Arrows don't need that.
01:23:42They're in such deep trouble.
01:23:44Look at the cut rail
01:23:45running down hill.
01:23:46They're in such deep trouble
01:23:47with financially,
01:23:48and they just seem to have
01:23:49lost their way totally.
01:23:51Prince Malik has left
01:23:52the management structure
01:23:53of the team.
01:23:54He still retains
01:23:55a 10% ownership.
01:23:57Well, they thought
01:23:58he was going to bring
01:23:59the sponsorship to the team,
01:24:00and he just hasn't brought
01:24:01the money he thought he would.
01:24:02Here we go.
01:24:03Takagi coming around
01:24:04the corner, loses it.
01:24:06Didn't quite pick up
01:24:07whether he got in the white line
01:24:08or not on the outside,
01:24:09and he goes.
01:24:10Dear, that's just what
01:24:11Arrows did not need.
01:24:12Tom Walkinshaw just
01:24:13is absolutely dumbfounded
01:24:15as to why he cannot
01:24:16make Formula 1 work.
01:24:17Everything else he's touched
01:24:18in motor racing
01:24:19has turned to gold.
01:24:21Sports car, touring car,
01:24:22whatever it was,
01:24:23he made it work.
01:24:24That was a shot, of course,
01:24:25from the car of
01:24:26Ralph Schumacher.
01:24:29And Takagi saunters away.
01:24:31You see the wheel
01:24:32has come to rest
01:24:33against the tire wall,
01:24:34safely out of harm's way.
01:24:35I don't think anybody's
01:24:36going to want him
01:24:37to drive an Indy car
01:24:39unless he brings
01:24:40a lot of money.
01:24:41Not anybody has watched
01:24:42these telecasts.
01:24:43I think people must realize
01:24:44that a lot of these drivers
01:24:45bring a bundle of money
01:24:46with them, and that's
01:24:47what gets them
01:24:48where they are.
01:24:50Ralph coming up
01:24:51over the back of
01:24:52Johnny Herbert.
01:24:53He just wants to drive
01:24:54into the road,
01:24:55and he'll go by.
01:24:56You see there's dry road,
01:24:57but it's scarcely
01:24:58a car wide.
01:24:59There we go.
01:25:00You don't want to get
01:25:01on that white line.
01:25:02The water does not
01:25:03permeate white lines,
01:25:04and you have to
01:25:05keep your car off it.
01:25:07Oh, that looked like
01:25:08a Ferrari going very slow.
01:25:09No, it was De La Rosa.
01:25:10It was the second arrows.
01:25:11Oh, sorry.
01:25:14Here he goes down
01:25:15the inside, Ralph.
01:25:16Go, Ralph.
01:25:17Look at that.
01:25:18I mean, what bravery.
01:25:19Oh, no, it didn't work.
01:25:20Go, Johnny, go.
01:25:21Johnny's having a moment.
01:25:22Ralph is on dry tires,
01:25:23and I'm sure
01:25:24Johnny's on wet.
01:25:26And Ralph has to
01:25:27outbrake him
01:25:28on a wet line here.
01:25:30Is he going to get
01:25:31in his car?
01:25:32Yeah, Herbert has
01:25:33the clean braking line,
01:25:34and has the spot.
01:25:38So, a great battle.
01:25:42Oh, trouble for Mika Sala.
01:25:46Will he get back in the pit?
01:25:49Well, they were laid out
01:25:50for him for a pit stop.
01:25:53Maybe that wasn't
01:25:54coming up the hill just now.
01:25:55Strange indeed.
01:26:03Ralph gets it a bit...
01:26:04goes a bit wide there
01:26:05in the damp.
01:26:07Super aerial shot.
01:26:09Fisichella.
01:26:11The problem is, to overtake,
01:26:12you have to take the wet line
01:26:13to overtake,
01:26:14and that is very precarious.
01:26:16Eight-second lead
01:26:17for Fisichella,
01:26:18but he's in heavy traffic.
01:26:26The Fisichella working traffic
01:26:27is the leader.
01:26:29Right behind Ricciardo's
01:26:30on track.
01:26:32Johnny Herbert
01:26:33in second.
01:26:35Ralph Schumacher third.
01:26:37Jarno Trulli fourth.
01:26:40Barrichello fifth,
01:26:41as Herbert comes
01:26:42to the pit lane,
01:26:43and Luca
01:26:44is in second.
01:26:46The Fisichella
01:26:47working traffic
01:26:48is the leader.
01:26:49Right behind Ricciardo's
01:26:50on track.
01:26:52Johnny Herbert
01:26:53in second.
01:26:54Jarno Trulli
01:26:55in the pit lane,
01:26:56and Luca Badour
01:26:57poised to score
01:26:58a point for Minardi.
01:27:01It would be absolutely
01:27:02magnificent if Minardi
01:27:03was to get a World Championship
01:27:04point.
01:27:05It would be absolutely
01:27:06superb.
01:27:08There's Ralph,
01:27:09now on his own
01:27:10as Johnny Herbert
01:27:11goes in the pits.
01:27:12Now let's see if Ralph
01:27:13can catch up
01:27:14the eight seconds
01:27:15on Fisichella.
01:27:16We don't know, of course,
01:27:17that Fisichella
01:27:18hasn't got a stop again.
01:27:19I wouldn't think so.
01:27:20Just a few laps to go.
01:27:24Dry tires for Herbert.
01:27:27Testing for grip there
01:27:28as he comes back out
01:27:29on the circuit.
01:27:30This is a really weird feeling
01:27:31as you come out
01:27:32on fresh tires.
01:27:33Then right behind
01:27:34is Mika Hakkinen.
01:27:35Of course, he's totally
01:27:36out of contention.
01:27:37One minute 36
01:27:38behind the leader.
01:27:39So, in fact,
01:27:40Johnny Herbert
01:27:41is a lap ahead of him
01:27:42at this point.
01:27:43Hard to believe
01:27:44that Mika Hakkinen
01:27:45could go a lap down,
01:27:46fall completely out
01:27:47of contention,
01:27:48and yet, Derek,
01:27:49it doesn't look
01:27:50as if he'll lose
01:27:51the point lead.
01:27:52Well, he won't,
01:27:53should he score
01:27:54to 6th place
01:27:55and take the one point.
01:27:56Yeah, that's all
01:27:57that could happen.
01:27:58And Irvine is in 7th
01:27:59at the moment,
01:28:00and surely,
01:28:01Eddie Irvine
01:28:02can catch Luca Baddauer.
01:28:03But Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:28:04crashed out of the race.
01:28:05David Coulthard
01:28:06slid off the track
01:28:07and out of the race.
01:28:08Yeah, that was
01:28:09very, very
01:28:10unfortunate for David.
01:28:11Very bad judgment.
01:28:12He should have come in,
01:28:13although he was being,
01:28:14you know,
01:28:15he, I thought,
01:28:16had his thumb
01:28:17right on the controls
01:28:18of what was happening,
01:28:19but, obviously,
01:28:20he didn't,
01:28:21and that was it.
01:28:22Very bad judgment.
01:28:23And Frentzen,
01:28:24with either a mechanical
01:28:25or electrical problem,
01:28:26perhaps
01:28:27a
01:28:28loss of throttle,
01:28:29as happened to Damon Hill
01:28:30on the first lap
01:28:31of the race.
01:28:33Well, would Michael Schumacher
01:28:34have reveled in this lot?
01:28:35Fizzy Keller
01:28:36zapping by Eddie Irvine.
01:28:37No.
01:28:38Yes, he is.
01:28:39No, he isn't.
01:28:40Yes, he is.
01:28:41That's good of Eddie
01:28:42to let him ease through.
01:28:43Eddie, a lap behind.
01:28:44Pretty bad stuff.
01:28:45A lap behind.
01:28:46Jarno Trulli
01:28:47came in the pits
01:28:48in 4th place.
01:28:52And that will be
01:28:53his final stop.
01:28:54How galling
01:28:55for Eddie Irvine
01:28:56to let Fizzy Keller
01:28:57go through.
01:29:01Well, of course,
01:29:02Eddie's got to run
01:29:03his own race,
01:29:04and right now
01:29:05he's got to catch up
01:29:06with Luca Badua.
01:29:07This is the overtaking
01:29:08maneuver of Fizzy Keller
01:29:09on Eddie just now.
01:29:13Eddie left him
01:29:14a day and a half.
01:29:15Oh, and then he goes
01:29:16off the road.
01:29:17No.
01:29:18Fizzy Keller pulls off
01:29:19well in the lead.
01:29:20I can't believe it.
01:29:21He's in the lead
01:29:22of the European Grand Prix.
01:29:23What has gone wrong today?
01:29:25Everybody's just pulling off.
01:29:27Can't believe it.
01:29:29I bet he can't either.
01:29:30That's very, very sad
01:29:31for the team.
01:29:32Here he goes,
01:29:33coming into the chicane.
01:29:34The Vidal chicane
01:29:35gets it sideways.
01:29:36He probably stalled it.
01:29:38I think he stalled it.
01:29:39Isn't that where
01:29:40he spun before?
01:29:41He spun it there before.
01:29:42He's got all the wheels
01:29:43locked up,
01:29:44and he stalled the engine,
01:29:45and he's lost
01:29:46the European Grand Prix.
01:29:47And my goodness,
01:29:48how Benetton needed
01:29:49that victory today.
01:29:51Oh, my goodness,
01:29:52the mechanics are so distraught.
01:29:54And there's Fizzy Keller.
01:29:55Such a letdown.
01:29:56He is the third driver
01:29:57to slide off the track,
01:29:58out of the lead,
01:30:00and out of the race.
01:30:02What need you say
01:30:03as they lift his car
01:30:04up in front of his face,
01:30:05and the four-by.
01:30:07He must be rushing
01:30:08through his head
01:30:09when he knows there's
01:30:10a young,
01:30:11asked Mr. Benetton,
01:30:14Rocco Benetton there.
01:30:15He must be terribly upset
01:30:16because he really needed
01:30:17that victory today.
01:30:18My goodness.
01:30:19Listen to that crowd
01:30:20cheering on Ralf Schumacher.
01:30:22Well, here's who's left.
01:30:24Ralf Schumacher
01:30:25is your new leader.
01:30:26He leads,
01:30:27and he's lost a tire.
01:30:28He's lost the right rear.
01:30:30Oh, my goodness me.
01:30:32I don't believe it
01:30:33as he goes off the road.
01:30:35They were setting up
01:30:36for him to come in.
01:30:37He's got to keep it going
01:30:38to get back to pits,
01:30:39but I believe he's right
01:30:40down the bottom end.
01:30:41He's not going to be able
01:30:42to get it back
01:30:43because he's going to lose
01:30:44some body work.
01:30:45Unbelievable.
01:30:46I don't believe it.
01:30:47He's right down
01:30:48the bottom end.
01:30:49Oh, Ralf,
01:30:50I don't believe it.
01:30:51I wonder what his brother
01:30:52Michael's thinking right now.
01:30:54That if it wasn't for bad luck...
01:30:56He had a 27-second lead
01:30:58over Jarno Trulli.
01:31:00And Johnny Herbert
01:31:01has now passed Jarno Trulli.
01:31:04My goodness me.
01:31:05And here he comes.
01:31:06Here they come.
01:31:07He's got this little bit uphill.
01:31:08He's got quite a ways to go yet.
01:31:09And there goes Johnny Herbert
01:31:10to take the lead
01:31:11of the European Grand Prix.
01:31:13Amazing.
01:31:15So Herbert's the leader.
01:31:16Trulli is not that far behind him.
01:31:17There's Jarno Trulli
01:31:18in the cross.
01:31:19Barrichello
01:31:20has now come to fourth.
01:31:22Luca Badauer
01:31:23is fifth.
01:31:24And Eddie Irvine,
01:31:25sixth.
01:31:26Oh, the Shooks are wondering
01:31:27what are we going to do here?
01:31:28We've got two cars
01:31:29suddenly looking good.
01:31:30In fact, Barrichello
01:31:31is in third place
01:31:32because Schumacher
01:31:33actually is obviously
01:31:34out of the first four positions.
01:31:36Now, Eddie Irvine
01:31:37had climbed to seventh
01:31:38and he pits.
01:31:39Change of tires.
01:31:40Well, he won't necessarily
01:31:42be in sixth, of course,
01:31:43because Ralf was a lap
01:31:44ahead of him.
01:31:45Right.
01:31:47Ralf can get back.
01:31:48He should be coming
01:31:49into the pits right now
01:31:50and get that other wheel on.
01:31:51But Irvine...
01:31:52Here's his tire going.
01:31:53Hey, astonishing.
01:31:55How could that happen
01:31:56in these conditions?
01:31:57That is very bad.
01:31:58Damon apparently
01:31:59had a tire go
01:32:00during practice
01:32:01on Friday
01:32:02at 150 miles an hour
01:32:03and he had a nasty crash.
01:32:05It looks like
01:32:06a similar thing happened to him
01:32:07and there's no real reason
01:32:08to lose that.
01:32:11You'd never think
01:32:12you'd lose a wet,
01:32:13sorry, a dry tire
01:32:14in wet conditions.
01:32:15But here he is.
01:32:16He's made it back.
01:32:17Doesn't look like
01:32:18he's ripped the rear wing off.
01:32:19Just depends how much time
01:32:20he's lost.
01:32:21He must have lost
01:32:22half a lap.
01:32:23Maybe some under-tray damage
01:32:24but the car looks
01:32:25remarkably intact
01:32:26for what it's been through.
01:32:27Yeah.
01:32:28I'm staggered
01:32:29the way the tire
01:32:30stayed on the rim
01:32:31or around the rim.
01:32:32Well, thank goodness it did.
01:32:34You know, Ralf could still
01:32:35finish this race
01:32:36in the points.
01:32:38Astonishing as that may be.
01:32:39He hasn't damaged
01:32:40the bodywork.
01:32:41That's amazing.
01:32:42I mean, usually
01:32:43you damage the bodywork
01:32:44by shaking his head
01:32:45from side to side.
01:32:46It's not over yet.
01:32:47He comes into the pits
01:32:48in fourth place
01:32:49behind Herbert,
01:32:50Trulli and Barrichello.
01:32:52But everything...
01:32:53Clear bit of road.
01:32:54Let's just hope
01:32:55he didn't get any damage there
01:32:56and he can keep himself
01:32:57in that position.
01:33:00So Johnny Herbert
01:33:01for Stewart is the leader.
01:33:02Jarno Trulli,
01:33:03Rubens Barrichello.
01:33:06Talk about long odds
01:33:07at the top of the day.
01:33:08My goodness me.
01:33:10And that's Ricciardo
01:33:11Zonta behind him.
01:33:12Whoops.
01:33:13Car out.
01:33:14He comes out of there.
01:33:17Got to make sure
01:33:18everything's still attached.
01:33:19Yes, that's the main thing.
01:33:20Find out that
01:33:21nothing's loose at the back.
01:33:22You didn't damage
01:33:23the horrible feeling.
01:33:24Look at this group.
01:33:25My goodness me.
01:33:26Herbert with Mika Hakkinen
01:33:27right behind Mika.
01:33:28Obviously trying to
01:33:29un-lap himself
01:33:30I would have thought.
01:33:31Wouldn't be a bad idea.
01:33:35But with the way
01:33:36everything that's happened,
01:33:37who's to say that Hakkinen
01:33:38still couldn't win this race?
01:33:39Stranger things have
01:33:40happened already today.
01:33:43Who will win
01:33:44the Grand Prix of Europe?
01:33:45Will anybody?
01:33:46Stay with us.
01:33:49Welcome back to
01:33:50Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:33:51of the Grand Prix of Europe.
01:33:52Mike Joy with Derek Bell
01:33:53and Peter Windsor.
01:33:54And there are going to be
01:33:55some new faces on the podium
01:33:56today.
01:33:58Ralph, or rather
01:33:59Heinz-Harold Frentzen
01:34:00led from
01:34:01the start.
01:34:03Four
01:34:04laps led by
01:34:05Johnny Herbert.
01:34:06Five lead changes.
01:34:08And Frentzen,
01:34:09David Coulthard,
01:34:11Ralph Schumacher,
01:34:12and Giancarlo Fisichella
01:34:13each went off
01:34:14while leading.
01:34:16And all but Ralph
01:34:17are out of the race.
01:34:18He cut down
01:34:19a right rear tire
01:34:20and was able to continue.
01:34:21Mika Hakkinen
01:34:22lost a lap
01:34:23with a
01:34:24with tire change problems.
01:34:25Eddie Irvine
01:34:26fell way back
01:34:27when Ferrari
01:34:28was not ready
01:34:29for the dry tires
01:34:30he wanted
01:34:31instead of the wets
01:34:32that they had brought out.
01:34:33And all here is
01:34:34one of the minorities.
01:34:35Badawer
01:34:36in fourth place
01:34:37is coasting to a stop.
01:34:38Unbelievable.
01:34:39What a race.
01:34:40I've never seen
01:34:41so many dramas.
01:34:42So sad for Minardi
01:34:43and, of course,
01:34:44for Badawer.
01:34:45Didn't they need
01:34:46to get a fourth place?
01:34:47It would have been
01:34:48magnificent for them
01:34:49to get a fourth place.
01:34:50It would have been
01:34:51the first point
01:34:52since 1995
01:34:53when Pedro Lamy
01:34:54got sixth place
01:34:55in Australia.
01:34:56Absolutely superb
01:34:57luck,
01:34:58or bad luck
01:34:59should I say,
01:35:00but, I mean,
01:35:01superb race for them
01:35:02right up to that point.
01:35:03They were going so well.
01:35:04Such a pity
01:35:05that it all
01:35:06turned like that.
01:35:07Well, it will
01:35:08move Marc Genet
01:35:09up to sixth place.
01:35:10And, of course,
01:35:11Eddie Irvine
01:35:12in the points, too.
01:35:13Well, Eddie Irvine
01:35:14seventh.
01:35:15He's 12 seconds
01:35:16back of Genet.
01:35:17So, Luca Badawer,
01:35:18oh,
01:35:19there were
01:35:20three points
01:35:21at the taking
01:35:22for Badawer
01:35:23and he's out
01:35:24of the race
01:35:25and just...
01:35:26He's taken a long time
01:35:27over his five-second
01:35:28steering wheel job,
01:35:29but I think
01:35:30you could say
01:35:31that's down to
01:35:32emotion.
01:35:33Poor guy.
01:35:34Of all the heartbreaks
01:35:35today,
01:35:36well, perhaps
01:35:37that's the worst.
01:35:38There's the engine
01:35:39next year.
01:35:40They may well be running
01:35:41Renault Supertec engines
01:35:42and they can get
01:35:43this sponsorship package
01:35:44together.
01:35:45I really would love them to
01:35:46because the car
01:35:47obviously isn't that bad.
01:35:48It's just that the guys
01:35:49are running these
01:35:50antique engines
01:35:51on a very limited budget.
01:35:52Ralf Schumacher
01:35:53is going extremely well.
01:35:54He's pulling, actually,
01:35:55two seconds a lap
01:35:56in
01:35:57on the guys
01:35:58in front of him.
01:35:59Um,
01:36:00Mummelf is now
01:36:01in fourth place,
01:36:02of course.
01:36:03But a long way to go
01:36:04to catch Barrichello.
01:36:05So, here are your leaders.
01:36:06Johnny Herbert
01:36:07looking for his third
01:36:08position.
01:36:09Jarno Trulli,
01:36:10Rubens Barrichello.
01:36:11That's how the podium
01:36:12looks right now
01:36:13with ten laps to go.
01:36:14But,
01:36:15anything can happen
01:36:16and already has today.
01:36:17Ralf Schumacher,
01:36:18Jacques Villeneuve
01:36:19and Marc Genet
01:36:20still may have a chance
01:36:21to put up a point
01:36:22for Minardi.
01:36:23I think they probably
01:36:24told him to cut back
01:36:25on the revs,
01:36:26but out there,
01:36:27Marc,
01:36:28and just bring that car
01:36:29home for us.
01:36:30We just want to get in there
01:36:31and get a world championship
01:36:32point.
01:36:33It makes such a difference
01:36:34to their travel expenses
01:36:35and the amount of money
01:36:36they get from the
01:36:37race.
01:36:38Ten laps to go.
01:36:39Coulthard
01:36:40crashed out of the race
01:36:41leading.
01:36:42Alec Zanardi
01:36:43off the course.
01:36:44Damon Hill
01:36:45throttle problems
01:36:46on the first lap
01:36:47which triggered
01:36:48a big crash.
01:36:49Heinz-Harold Frentz
01:36:50and apparent throttle
01:36:51problems while leading
01:36:52out of the race.
01:36:53Both Benettons,
01:36:54Verts and Fisichella
01:36:55off.
01:36:56Both Saubers,
01:36:57Alessi Andoniz
01:36:58out of the race.
01:36:59Takagi
01:37:00into the barrier
01:37:01with predictable results.
01:37:02Luca Badoer
01:37:03has just lost
01:37:04an engine.
01:37:05Those are the
01:37:06retirees thus far.
01:37:07The main contenders
01:37:08for the world championship
01:37:09are Irvine and Hacken.
01:37:10And at this point
01:37:11only two seconds
01:37:12apart on the road.
01:37:13Hacken
01:37:14being two seconds
01:37:15behind Eddie Irvine.
01:37:16Lying in seventh
01:37:17and eighth place.
01:37:18And they are
01:37:19closing down on
01:37:20Genet.
01:37:21It was 12 seconds
01:37:22last lap.
01:37:23It's 10 seconds now
01:37:24from Irvine to Genet.
01:37:25Seeing Jackie
01:37:26Stewart in there
01:37:27reminds me that
01:37:28in 1968
01:37:29Jackie Stewart
01:37:30won the
01:37:31German,
01:37:32sorry,
01:37:33the European
01:37:34Grand Prix
01:37:35on the Nürburgring
01:37:36by four minutes.
01:37:37He had a four minute
01:37:38lead at the end.
01:37:39Absolutely astounding.
01:37:40Now who said
01:37:41it maybe wasn't
01:37:42boring then?
01:37:43Well of course
01:37:44now that was on
01:37:45the old course,
01:37:46correct?
01:37:47Of course, yeah.
01:37:48So it would not
01:37:49have been a lap.
01:37:50I mean certainly
01:37:51not a lap.
01:37:52That was a 13 mile course.
01:37:53It was eight
01:37:54minutes a lap.
01:37:5514 mile course.
01:37:56I have to admit
01:37:57even my own little way
01:37:58I was in
01:37:59four minute two there
01:38:00and I was four
01:38:01minutes in the lead
01:38:02until I came down
01:38:03into the last corner
01:38:04of the finish line.
01:38:05Never ever won
01:38:06on the old
01:38:07Nürburgring.
01:38:08Come to this place
01:38:09and I win it the
01:38:10first time out
01:38:11in the Porsche.
01:38:12Not what I wanted
01:38:13to win on this
01:38:14clinical,
01:38:15sort of modern
01:38:16circuit.
01:38:17Everybody wanted
01:38:18to win on that
01:38:19dangerous,
01:38:20phenomenal old
01:38:21circuit.
01:38:22The Nordschleife.
01:38:23Watching Mika
01:38:24Hakkinen
01:38:25who is now in
01:38:26eighth place.
01:38:27Irvine in seventh.
01:38:28They would score
01:38:29no points
01:38:30and of the top
01:38:31half dozen
01:38:32only Ralf Schumacher
01:38:33would score
01:38:34and that would
01:38:35be worth three
01:38:36points which is
01:38:37inconsequential.
01:38:38Here's Irvine and
01:38:39Hakkinen really going
01:38:40for it.
01:38:41Look, Eddie Irvine
01:38:42two contenders for
01:38:43the world championship
01:38:44and there of course
01:38:45we have
01:38:46De La Rosa walking
01:38:47back.
01:38:48He was in
01:38:49fourth in
01:38:50tenth place.
01:38:51Well that puts both
01:38:52arrows out of the race
01:38:53and almost contact
01:38:54there between
01:38:55Irvine and Hakkinen.
01:38:56Hakkinen went to the
01:38:57grass.
01:38:58Well Irvine doesn't
01:38:59want to let him
01:39:00by although they're
01:39:01not in the points
01:39:02and there's a
01:39:03little bit of
01:39:04machoism about
01:39:05this because
01:39:06Eddie would like to
01:39:07finish ahead of the
01:39:08guy he says he's
01:39:09better than.
01:39:10Plus of course
01:39:11should there be a
01:39:12problem, here we go
01:39:13again as Mika looks
01:39:14down the inside.
01:39:15Eddie's not doing a
01:39:16very good job of
01:39:17holding him out
01:39:18from going around
01:39:19the outside and
01:39:20getting a better
01:39:21line and they go
01:39:22inside by side.
01:39:23Oops.
01:39:24No, Mika doesn't
01:39:25want to touch him.
01:39:26Not a good place
01:39:27to do it because
01:39:28you cannot see
01:39:29your way through
01:39:30that chicane as
01:39:31well.
01:39:32And
01:39:33there's a
01:39:34little bit of
01:39:35machoism about
01:39:36this because
01:39:37Eddie would like to
01:39:38finish ahead of the
01:39:39guy he says he's
01:39:40better than.
01:39:41Oops.
01:39:42No, Mika doesn't
01:39:43want to touch him.
01:39:44Not a good place
01:39:45to do it because
01:39:46you cannot see
01:39:47your way through
01:39:48that chicane as
01:39:49well.
01:39:50Oops.
01:39:51No, Mika doesn't
01:39:52want to touch him.
01:39:53Not a good place
01:39:54to do it because
01:39:55Eddie would like to
01:39:56finish ahead of the
01:39:57guy he says he's
01:39:58better than.
01:39:59Oops.
01:40:00No, Mika doesn't
01:40:01want to touch him.
