00:00In Bangladesh, anti-government protesters are gearing up for a march on the capital Dhaka this Monday.
00:05That rally, meant to force Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign,
00:08comes after the deadliest day of unrest since demonstrations first broke out last month.
00:13On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of protesters and government supporters across the country
00:18fought each other with sticks and knives as security forces opened fire with rifles.
00:23Nearly 100 people were killed.
00:26We're going to talk more about the latest developments now with our
00:28regional correspondent Navadita Kamari in New Delhi.
00:31Navadita, what's the latest you're hearing from Bangladesh today?
00:40Navadita, if you can hear me, what's the latest?
00:42I don't think she can hear me.
00:43Navadita, can you hear us in New Delhi?
00:47All right, we seem to be having...
00:49Navadita, can you hear us?
00:53We just got a news alert that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
00:57has moved from her Dhaka palace to a safer, unknown location.
01:02Earlier, we had this information that the army chief was supposed to
01:06and is expected to address the nation in 30 minutes.
01:09This amidst the ongoing protests and thousands of protesters trying to
01:15join the march to Dhaka protest.
01:17Thousands of armed troops are also patrolling the streets of Dhaka,
01:22and they're especially keeping an eye at the entry and exit points of the city
01:28because thousands of people from the suburbs of the city are trying to
01:33come inside the city to join this protest.
01:37For the moment, it appears to be relatively calm
01:40as the protesters wait for what the army chief has to say.
01:45Indeed, and that is something that the students are waiting for
01:48in particular before they begin their march.
01:51All of this comes one day after close to 100 people were killed in violence there.
01:59Exactly.
01:59Sunday was one of the deadliest since the protests began one month ago,
02:03and it has been a culmination of a lot of anger piled up amongst people.
02:09And this country of 170 million,
02:12the people have been claiming that they're facing economic hardship.
02:17The people are angry at the way the government is treating the social activists.
02:22They claim that the government has shrunk
02:25the space for their democratic rights and freedom of speech.
02:30Opposition leaders have also in the last election boycotted the election,
02:34saying that there is no credible free and fair election happening.
02:38So in the last 15 years of the rule of Sheikh Hasina government,
02:43people have been angry at the way she has been running the country
02:47and the way they are suffering.
02:48So what we see today on the streets of Dhaka
02:52is months of culmination of this pent up feeling among the people.
02:57Thank you Navadita for that.
02:59That's our regional correspondent Navadita Kamari
03:01there on those latest developments out of Bangladesh.
