00:00So we're here in Newport and this land, it's been proposed to be developed on for a while hasn't it?
00:05What's your name, sir?
00:06Paul Eccleston
00:07Are you a local resident?
00:08Yeah, I live just over the corner there, sir.
00:11And obviously find this land very useful for dog walking and a nice gentle stroll.
00:15Yes, that's right.
00:16I'm presuming you'd rather not see it built.
00:18What's your thoughts on potentially 214 houses?
00:21I think there's too many houses that have been built recently for a town the size of Newport.
00:30And also, you know, this is one of the last pieces of green land in this side of Newport.
00:34The north side of Newport has got quite a lot of green land.
00:37Yeah.
00:38But there's very little for people to walk and, you know, just roam freely.
00:43So you were saying that...
00:44So you'd have to get a bus or get in your car to go to any parks.
00:49And you were saying one of the pieces of land that a lot of the people you see walking here
00:53was just over the way there where they've already built on.
00:55That's the one that they built on first, yeah.
00:57So that's 310 houses, I think.
01:00Yeah.
01:01And a big lack of retirement on those sort of shelters.
01:04What do you call it? A housing...
01:06Yeah, it's over 55s, isn't it? I think that one, the big one.
01:09So that was the big, the main dog walk.
01:13And it was used for all sorts of sports.
01:15Kids rode their bikes there.
01:17You know, teenagers hung around there.
01:19But it was a good piece of land and then they just built on it.
01:22Yeah.
01:24Because I think the Labour council in Telford...
01:27I don't think they really care about Newport.
01:30I think it's just a bit of a cash cow for them.
01:32Yeah.
01:33Well, I met one gentleman just and he was saying that he thinks it's kind of
01:37payback for residents kicking up and not letting the Sainsbury's being built.
01:41He said they're going to get the money somewhere. That was his thought.
01:44Maybe, but I mean, the Sainsbury's was just a stupid idea, you know.
01:48I mean, Sainsbury's themselves pulled out of it eventually.
01:51Yeah.
01:52So they decided not to carry on with the price of money.
01:55Does it concern you?
01:56Obviously, it will be a loss in terms of a nice piece of land
01:59where you can kind of get out in nature and have a walk.
02:01But what about the increase in development?
02:03Does it concern you?
02:04You know, things like getting in doctors and that kind of stuff.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Yeah.
02:09I mean, you know, we don't get any more doctor's surgeries.
02:12We don't get any more schools and stuff like that.
02:16You know, I guess it does.
02:17Yeah.
02:18I mean, don't get me wrong.
02:20You know, some of the development has led to an improvement in the town, I think.
02:26The shops are busier, the town's a little bit more prosperous.
02:29Yeah.
02:30So there's some things.
02:31But, you know, how do you draw the line? How many houses do you build?
02:35Yeah.
02:36Do you build on every green space within the town?
02:39Yeah.
02:40I think there's too many.
02:50Yeah.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Yeah.
02:53Yeah.
