Truck full of cattle crashes in inner-city Melbourne

A truck full of cattle has crashed - becoming lodged under a bridge in Melbourne’s inner-city.  At least one cow was on the loose after the crash in South Yarra, just before 8:30pm last night. The driver of the vehicle wasn't injured.

00:00Alexandra Avenue here in South Yarra, just south-east of the city, might be pretty clear

00:06now, but it was a completely different story around 8.30 last night.

00:12That's when we saw this cattle transport truck attempt to go underneath this low-clearance

00:174-metre railway bridge behind me, and it became wedged underneath that bridge.

00:24Now we saw some pretty inventive use of police crime scene tape by emergency services when

00:30they got here to try to pen in some of those cows that had come loose, and this definitely

00:36caused some real traffic chaos with a big build-up of cars, as well as major delays

00:42on the train network, because this, after all, is a railway bridge in between the very

00:47busy South Yarra and Richmond train station.

00:50This was obviously quite a serious issue, because so many of those cows remained trapped

00:56on that stock truck, and what we've heard from authorities is that emergency vets had

01:02to come in and actually put down some of those cattle that had been injured in this accident,

01:08as well as Agriculture Victoria having to come in and spend a lot of time last night

01:13carefully trying to get these cows off that damaged truck and onto other transport.

01:20And it took until about 4.30 this morning for police to actually be able to clear away

01:25this truck and have this area open for traffic use.

01:30Now we've heard as well from the police that they haven't laid any charges at this stage,

01:35but they continue to talk to the driver and he is helping them with their inquiries, but

01:41it has to be said that this would have been a very surprising sight for so many drivers

01:46and people in this area to see cows just wandering along streets so close to Melbourne's CBD.
