A 23-year-old man has suffered significant injuries to his right leg after being attacked by a shark at Port Macquarie's North Shore Beach.

00:00Now what we know at this stage is that a 23 year old local man from Port Macquarie was

00:27surfing about 100 metres north of the northern breakwall here at Port Macquarie. Around that

00:33time it appears he's been attacked by quite a large shark and has suffered significant

00:39injuries to his right leg. Luckily a passerby who was on the beach was able to come to his

00:44aid and apply a tourniquet until emergency services arrived. A very traumatic sight and

00:50very traumatic for that young man that was involved. We're working with DPI to try and

00:54locate that shark and identify what type of shark that was. We've seized a number of exhibits in

00:59relation to the attack and they will be taken back to Port Macquarie Police Station.
