'Britain is back on the European stage' as it pledges to reset relations with the EU

Britain's new Labour-led government has vowed to improve ties with the EU, and a possible summit between the two sides is being floated.

00:00Britain is back, that's the key message from the UK government and newly elected Prime

00:05Minister Keir Starmer. Over 45 countries are attending the informal European political

00:10community hosted in Oxford where issues of mutual concern are discussed. The UK says

00:16it's eager to shake off the image as a country which breaches international law and is in

00:21constant confrontation with its European partners.

00:26Britain is back here on the European stage today and I think you've already seen in the

00:30very early days of this government the Rwanda scheme has been scrapped. Our commitment to

00:36remaining signatories to the European Convention on Human Rights, which by the way Winston

00:40Churchill himself, we're here at his birthplace, Blenheim Palace, played such a part in actually

00:45creating in the first place. So yes, we are going to be a government that respects international

00:51law, a government that stands tall on the world stage and yes in respect of the Windsor

00:56framework our commitment is to implementing that and being, I'm not saying for a moment

01:01that we're always going to agree but we will always be a good faith partner. President

01:06Zelensky is here, are you confident that there is watertight support for Ukraine in the long

01:13haul by all your European counterparts and the UK? Well that's what I'm seeing in the

01:18room today, that's what I'm seeing when I hear President Zelensky speak in that extraordinarily

01:24powerful way. I could feel the sense of solidarity in the room when he was speaking and for us

01:29as a new government, we from opposition offered bipartisan support for Ukraine and we will

01:35continue to offer that support for as long as it takes. One of the other big topics is

01:39defending democracy. We have Viktor Orban here who is going to hold the next EPC. Is

01:44that problematic for you that he doesn't support Ukraine in any military way but then

01:48goes to Putin, he's someone who essentially sides with the opposition? Listen, we work

01:56with the world as we find it, it's a matter for other countries who their leaders are

02:02but that doesn't mean we won't continue to pursue our objectives and continue to do as

02:08we have been doing and Kyistarma has been doing so powerfully here today which is to

02:12build that coalition of support for Ukraine as wide as we possibly can and that's what

02:17we will continue to do.
