Rail delay payouts revealed: How bad is your train operator?

The number of rail passengers claiming compensation for delayed or cancelled services has reached record highs.

00:007.6 million train journeys were fully or partially refunded due to being late or cancelled in

00:08the financial year to April. That's the highest number of compensation claims paid

00:12out by rail companies on record and constitutes a 30% rise from the previous year. But which

00:17train operators were among the worst offenders? Data from the Office for Road and Rail shows

00:22Great Western Railway, which covers the west of England and Wales, saw an 80% rise in claims.

00:28They paid out 1.43 million times the highest number of any operator. Avanti West Coast

00:33came in second with a 41% increase to 1.1 million claims. The Elizabeth Line saw the

00:38biggest jump, an increase of 191% for them. While the number of services increased in

00:44this time, so did lateness and unreliability, according to the ORR. But it wasn't all poor

00:49service for passengers on Greater Anglia, Southeastern, ScotRail and the Heathrow Express.
