A new Hospice shop brings a presence back to Kingswinford for The Mary Stevens Hospice.

00:00Welcome to Townsend Place to our new Mary Stephens Hospice shop.

00:06This is the first shop we've opened in seven years and we're absolutely delighted to be back in Kingsford.

00:12So we're going to hand over to Rachel, new shop manager, and Helen, one of our sisters, to cut the ribbon.

00:18So we're here at the Mary Stephens Hospice shop, brand new shop for Kingsford.

00:34But there was one here previously wasn't there, Clare?

00:36There was, up in the High Street, yes.

00:38How long ago was that then?

00:40It's been shut for six, seven years now.

00:42Yeah, so nice to be back.

00:44Absolutely, yeah.

00:46How many shops have you got now?

00:48This will be our fourteenth shop.

00:50Fourteenth shop?

00:52Yes, we're very proud.

00:54Where was your first shop?

00:56Our very first shop was in Victoria Passage, Stourbridge High Street.

00:58Just off Stourbridge High Street.

01:00And that was some 31 years ago now.

01:0231 years, wow.

01:04And store manager is?

01:06Rachel.

01:08Are you new to the team or have you been involved with a shop previously?

01:10I'm not. I used to sponsor Mary Stephens at Wollaston.

01:12I did that for five years.

01:14So I've been being bank staff all by Mary Stephens

01:16for about a year and a half.

01:18So this is my first full-time shop.

01:20So I'm very excited.

01:22And hats off, I mean, it's the life, isn't it?

01:24The volunteering team that are kind of behind you.

01:26So hats off for those five years

01:28putting in the graft there.

01:30And we've got a couple of staff members.

01:32You had the honour of cutting the ribbon, didn't you?

01:34I did, yes.

01:36So you're one of the nurses at the hospice?

01:38Yes, I've been working on the inpatient unit now

01:40for just going into my ninth year.

01:42It's wonderful.

01:44The work they do is amazing, isn't it?

01:46Incredible. We've got a great team.

01:48And people get confused with hospices.

01:50They kind of think it's a place where we go in its end of life.

01:52But it's not, is it?

01:54You have day patients, you have all kinds of cases.

01:56Absolutely.

01:58We've got two parts for our hospice.

02:00We've got our day services.

02:02We're currently looking after between 100 and 150 patients a week.

02:04And they come in for

02:06eight-week programmes

02:08of targeted care

02:10or for therapies

02:12or to access our patient

02:14and family support services.

02:16So social worker, bereavement team,

02:18spiritual care.

02:20And then we've got our inpatient unit

02:22where Jasper and Helen work.

02:24We've got ten beds and we look after anybody

02:26from the age of 18 right the way through.

02:28We offer symptom management,

02:30crisis intervention,

02:32as well as end-of-life care.

02:34Yes, it's a massive team, isn't it?

02:36So you're always after

02:38good quality donations for the shops, aren't you?

02:40We are.

02:42Rachel will be pleased to see you turn up with a bag of some good quality stuff.

02:44How much of a big part

02:46is it in terms of the funding

02:48that you get from the shops?

02:50How much of the funding comes from that kind of area?

02:52So we have to raise

02:54as a hospice

02:56over £2.8 million

02:58every year

03:00towards our running costs.

03:02Our trading company, which is all of our shops,

03:04give back to us

03:06more than I make

03:08upwards of £300,000 a year.

03:10So it's a huge, huge

03:12part of the hospice

03:14that's really important to us.
