00:00Why the miracle always happen to your team? Why does subs always become super subs? Thank you.
00:08Character. I mean, I think definitely tonight I don't think we deserve to be behind. It was a moment.
00:19We'd started the game really well and I thought our performance with the ball was exceptional.
00:26Really good. We caused a lot of problems. It was a very complicated game.
00:32They kept changing the way they were building up, so we had to keep changing the way we were defending.
00:37They kept changing the way they were defending, so we were looking for different solutions.
00:42But, you know, in the end the players made so many good decisions on the field.
00:48People like Bukayo Saka, the defensive responsibility he had, he started defending as a wing-back,
00:55then he had to go into midfield to defend, then he had to defend as a winger.
00:59There were so many things like that going on all night.
01:02But I was really pleased with the quality of our play.
01:06I would imagine a long time since, or if ever, an English side had 60% of the ball aside from the Netherlands.
01:17It shows the more modern England way, but also the resilience and the character of the group.
01:26Olly Watkins has trained like that every day and he's been ready for his moment,
01:33no matter how frustrated he might have been at not playing.
01:36He's been ready and the whole group have been.
01:41The way that they've formed, it's a group with a lot of new players in it.
01:46Half of them had never been to a tournament, but they've bonded so well.
01:53They've all got each other's back and tonight was a great example of that.
02:03It sounds like you've stressed out the King back home.
02:06We sent you a message saying he was on the edge of his seat like a lot of the fans.
02:09Can you give a message to the people back home who have been stressed out by that performance
02:14and over the past few weeks your late late shows?
02:19I hope they're enjoying a few beers really.
02:22We've had some incredible nights the last seven or eight years.
02:27These games have been dramatic because the goals have come so late.
02:34The only reason I did the job when I took it on was to try and bring success to England as a nation
02:43and to try and improve English football.
02:46To be able to take the team to a first final overseas, I'm immensely proud of that.
02:54But now of course we've come here to win.
02:57We play the team who have been the best team in the tournament
03:00and we have a day less to prepare, so it's a huge task.
03:04But we're still here and we're fighting.
03:16Kobe Mane was everywhere in that first half
03:19and seemed to be gaining confidence from everything that he did, pulling out the flicks by the end of the half.
03:24Do you think this was a breakout performance for him in an England shirt
03:29and how important is it for the team to have players like that who bring a bit of youthful joy to the game?
03:36I think all of his performances have been exceptional, especially when you consider his age.
03:44We haven't really had a player like him until now,
03:49so it makes such a difference when your midfield players can receive,
03:53pressed and turn with the ball so easily and comfortably.
03:57It looks simple when he does it, but it isn't simple.
04:02But I thought him, Phil popping up in spaces, Jude.
04:07Our movement was really good and that caused a lot of problems.
04:12It caused them to adapt how they were without the ball.
04:19We had the goal that's disallowed by a fraction for offside.
04:23We have the chance that Phil has just cleared off the line.
04:26I was really pleased with our football tonight.
04:34You chose to pick off Harry Kane, your captain, ten minutes before the game was finished.
04:39Your best penalty shooter.
04:41This seems like quite a gamble, but how does it feel that it paid off?
04:47Harry took quite a big knock when he won the penalty,
04:51so we weren't sure how long he would be able to play on for.
04:57Him and Phil were playing well, but we were losing a little bit of energy on the pressure.
05:04Certainly we weren't taking Phil off because of his performance,
05:08but we have got good players on the bench.
05:11That freshness we felt could help us.
05:14We wanted to make that gamble in normal time rather than wait until extra time,
05:21having been to extra time twice.
05:24We didn't really want to go through that again physically as a team.
05:30For Oli to produce that moment when he did saved us another half an hour at least.
05:38Very, very special for him. I'm delighted for him.
05:41Hi Gareth, congratulations. James Ollock from ESPN.
05:45Could you just talk a bit about the changes the Netherlands made in the second half?
05:49The tactical problem that posed for you and what your thought process was in solving it?
05:56From the start of the game they were dropping Depay lower,
06:02Simmonds on the other side to normal.
06:06Building a little bit more with a four.
06:10We didn't need the five at the back.
06:13We pushed Bukayo into midfield to pick up Reinders.
06:18They then adapted again because they were having problems dealing with us.
06:23They left the left flank a bit freer in the latter part of the second half.
06:29Played almost a 4-2-2-2, much narrower.
06:33It meant that they had the numbers in midfield to make it more difficult for us.
06:39Kieran had a little bit of a problem. Hopefully he could be okay.
06:43But with them giving us the left flank it was a good moment to bring Luke on.
06:47We weren't sure how long he could play.
06:49But to finish the game we felt would be important.
06:52So they then adapted again with Veghorst coming on.
06:57They had more numbers through.
06:58So they were a three-box-three in the second half.
07:02Bukayo did a brilliant job covering inside.
07:06We weren't able to be quite as incisive as we were in the first half.
07:09But we kept the ball really well and we made them run.
07:12Maybe in the end that's the bit that's fatigued them.
07:17That's been critical in the goal that we scored.
07:22There was a lot going on in the game.
07:26We had to keep making decisions and getting messages on.
07:29But in the end it's the players that make the decisions on the pitch.
07:32They did it brilliantly.
07:36Michael Boyko for 90plus German media.
07:39England now have mainly played against defensively strong teams.
07:45Now they face Spain in the final.
07:47The strongest team in this tournament.
07:51Would you say that possession and offensive teams suit England better
07:58in terms of playing style?
08:02We'll have to get the ball off them first.
08:05It's not as simple as us having the ball and making them run.
08:10They press very, very well.
08:13We're going to have to be exceptional with the ball.
08:16And we're going to have to be exceptional without it.
08:18But it's a final.
08:19You expect it to be that way.
08:22They've been the best team.
08:24We're starting to show a better version of ourselves.
08:28The extra day is a concern.
08:30In the last few tournaments that's been a problem for finalists.
08:36We've got to do the very best we can to recover the players as well as we can.
08:42But we're not going to be on the training ground.
08:44It's simple.
08:45We'll be walking through things or delivering things in meetings,
08:48which was the same for this game.
08:52But we're in there.
08:55With what we've shown to this point, we have as good a chance as they do.
09:05You've touched on the personal criticism and the build-up.
09:07Obviously the difficulties you had early on.
09:09Every knockout game there's talk of whether it's your last game.
09:13With all that in mind, where does this rank in terms of achievements
09:16in your time in England and how proud are you of everything?
09:23As I said earlier, I took the job to try and improve English football.
09:28We're now in a second final.
09:31The last one was the first in 50 years.
09:33We're now in the first that isn't played on our shores.
09:39I think we've got a team that will be together for quite a while,
09:42so it's not as though this is a team that's at the end of a cycle.
09:47We're giving people some amazing nights.
09:49I think we've given our supporters some of the best nights over the last 50 years.
09:56I'm hugely proud of that.
09:57I'm delighted if everybody at home is feeling the way we are
10:02and the way the supporters in this stadium were feeling.
10:06But from our point of view, we're not finished.
10:09We've got the greatest possible test to prepare for.
10:17We came here to try and win the tournament and that's still our aim.
10:26Will the experience of the three years ago preparing for the final
10:32call on those experiences to help you this time around?
10:36Is there an important balance to strike tonight in terms of celebrating the moment
10:42but also focusing on the game on Sunday?
10:46The lads are singing in the dressing room but they're straight in the ice.
10:55There won't be any wild parties.
10:57We've had a couple of those already.
11:00We pick our moments for those.
11:03In terms of the experience, of course.
11:05Every game you manage, every tournament you manage, you learn so much.
11:12When I took this job I'd had three years as a Premier League manager.
11:18I've now had 100 internationals, some of the biggest games in world football.
11:22You learn all the time from that.
11:25We're more calm going into the knockout games
11:28because the first time we did it in Russia we hadn't won a knockout game for 10 years.
11:33We hadn't been through the experience.
11:37Quarter-finals, semi-finals, we've managed a lot of those games now.
11:43You're definitely much better prepared because every experience you go through
11:47you learn from.
11:51You're improving all the time.
11:53Your knowledge, your understanding.
11:55I would say if you're a coach and you're not doing that, there'd be a problem really.
12:02The last finals, it was the first European Championship final I'd ever managed.
12:08If I didn't get everything right, apologies for that.
12:11We'll try and do better this week.
