So, what can people expect from this Highland Games?
00:04
A really good day out is the one thing for a start
00:07
and all the normal events for Highland Games will be on show on the day
00:13
and we're hoping to have a good crowd of spectators
00:18
and a large number of athletes.
00:21
And what's your favourite part of the day, Glynnis?
00:23
I just love the whole day.
00:25
I like the fact that it's a day out for the whole family.
00:29
There are lots of things for people to do, lots of highlights this year.
00:33
One thing I'm really looking forward to is the ferret racing.
00:37
Our event manager, Kim Reit, has organised a fabulous day for everyone
00:42
so, yeah, I'm quite excited about the day.
00:45
And how long have you been involved in it?
00:48
23 years, I think.
00:50
Something like that.
00:51
I think it's actually more than that.
00:52
Is it more than that? I can't remember, to be quite honest.
00:54
A long time.
00:55
A long time.
00:57
It was a job that came with the Vice Chair of Education on the Inverness Area Committee.
01:05
That's right. Angus is a former councillor.
01:07
And at the end of the time, when I finished, I went to David and said,
01:12
that's me finished, and he said, no, just leave where you are.
01:15
I've been there ever since.
01:17
It's good that we still have one in Inverness
01:19
because I know a lot of areas outside of Inverness have lost the Highland Games
01:23
due to maybe lack of volunteers or people not being able to take it on.
01:26
So, what do you think?
01:28
Is it having a good team behind it that allows it to continue?
01:31
Yes, but the volunteers are still going to be a problem
01:35
because a lot of them are similar age to me.
01:40
And there's not the younger ones coming in,
01:43
especially as people to officiate.
01:50
But we do our best and we get there in the end.
01:53
It'll be a great day.
01:55
Yes, it'll be a good day, an excellent day.
01:57
So, is there anyone you would like to thank?
01:59
I mean, Angus has just said, you know, the Highland Games,
02:02
Inverness Highland Games relies a lot on volunteers
02:05
and particularly the Highland Games Committee
02:07
and indeed councillors on the working group.
02:10
However, we wouldn't be able to do any event in Inverness
02:13
if it wasn't that Inverness has a really good Common Good Fund
02:17
and this event has always been supported by Inverness Common Good Fund.
02:21
I mean, it's really expensive to put on the Inverness Highland Games
02:25
and I'm sure it's the same for every Highland Games.
02:28
Yes, all the games are having the same problems.
02:30
All the games, there's Nethi, Glen Urquhart, you know,
02:34
it's the funding that's always the problem
02:36
and I think it's a real shame that, for example,
02:40
if we weren't able to afford to do the Inverness Highland Games,
02:44
Highland Games is all about the Highland, you know,
02:47
so, yeah, I'm pleased that we can still afford to do it
02:51
but it's thanks to the Common Good Fund.
