00:00In Schweinfurt we find the Georg Schäfer Museum between the river Main and the market
00:22Hello and welcome to the Georg Schäfer Museum in Schweinfurt, a large museum in a medium-sized city.
00:40How did it come about?
00:41This collection that is shown here was originally a private collection that has now become a foundation.
00:49And from this foundation, one of the most important and largest and most precious collections of German painting of the 19th century is being fed.
00:59This museum combines works by Caspar David Friedrich on more than 3,200 square meters.
01:26There we have over a dozen, for example, about the Munich School, which you now see in the background in this room,
01:33about all schools, about all painters and painters of the 19th century who were active in the German-speaking area, i.e. including Austria and Switzerland.
01:47The museum opens horizons to discover the distinctive characteristics of 19th century paint.
01:53With the permanent collection and the special exhibitions, accompanying programs.
01:59In terms of quality and scope, the Georg Schäfer collection is on a par with the collections of German art in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Neue Pinnacothek in Munich.
02:12The collection was started in the 1950s by the Schweinfurt industrialist and collector, Dr. Georg Schäfer.
02:20Many works of art were shown as loans in important museums during his lifetime.
02:26Finally, I would like to mention that the museum Georg Schäfer does not exhibit any looted art that has become known as such.
02:34Since the end of 2017, however, objects and texts have been used to draw attention to this extremely complex topic in their respective state of research.

03:15The collector had a great concept, a great heart.
03:18Even for unknown artists.
03:20And yet, of course, we also have masterpieces by the great Liebermann, Corinth, Lefocht.
03:26All are well represented here.
03:28Menzel, a large selection of works in a breadth and abundance that can only be found in very few other houses in Europe for German painting.
