00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the worst Netflix original
00:10films that were released in the first half of 2024.
00:1610.
00:19Spaceman There was quite a lot of hype for Spaceman.
00:23It was an all-star cast, including the likes of Adam Sandler, Cary Mulligan, and Paul Dano.
00:28Well, his voice.
00:41He was directed by Johan Renck, an Emmy-winning filmmaker who worked on the likes of Breaking
00:45Bad and Chernobyl.
00:47But yeah, it just did not work.
00:50Spaceman is endearing and well-intentioned enough, with some fantastic production design
00:55and admirable work from the talented cast.
01:11It was also plagued with iffy writing, underdeveloped characters, and some eyebrow-raising plot
01:17choices.
01:18That's not to mention a mountain of clichés and painful pacing issues.
01:22We wanted it to shoot for the stars.
01:25We're settling for Orbit.
01:309.
01:31Players Mac is a sports journalist wanting to settle
01:34down with the man of her dreams.
01:48That man is Nick, a war correspondent who recently got a job at her newspaper.
01:53So instead of courting him with charm and friendliness, Mac decides to run some plays
01:58with her friends to win his heart.
02:10There's one major problem with this movie.
02:13Mac is totally unlikable, both immature and kinda creepy.
02:18It also doesn't help that the movie is formulaic as heck and riddled with tropes, including
02:23the age-old girl-realizes-that-she-loves-her-best-friend ending.
02:40To think this movie, with a stalker for a protagonist, was this year's Valentine's
02:46Day offering.
02:478.
02:48Unfrosted Oh Seinfeld, how did it come to this?
02:53The legendary comedian continues his run of mediocre movies with Unfrosted, a stylized
02:59recreation of the Pop-Tart's invention.
03:07Yes, the premise sounds a little dry, but with the right tone, style, and director,
03:20it definitely could have worked.
03:22Seinfeld attempted to do something fun with it, imbuing the film with iconic comedians,
03:27a wacky tone, and an eye-popping color palette with retro design.
03:39None of it really worked.
03:41Like a bad Pop-Tart, all the ingredients are there, but it didn't come together to form
03:46a satisfying whole.
03:48Whether it was the easy jokes, cow farts anyone, or reliance on cameos over good writing, Unfrosted
03:55was, well, unfrosted.
04:067.
04:07Irish Wish Another Netflix rom-com, another movie riddled
04:12with genre tropes.
04:14To its credit, this one has a dash of originality, containing some fun magical elements.
04:25You see, Maddie loves Paul, who is marrying her best friend Emma.
04:37When Maddie finds a wishing bench and a magical fairy, she wishes that she was marrying Paul
04:43instead of Emma.
04:51That's about where the fun stops.
04:54What follows is cliché after cliché, especially once Maddie starts falling for another man.
05:00With uninspired writing and a generally cheap appearance, these tropes aren't given any
05:06juice.
05:07They're just the same boring beats we've seen a thousand times before.
05:20But hey, at least Ireland is nice.
05:236.
05:24Lift Director F. Gary Gray has a very solid filmography
05:29and is no stranger to helming smart, well-crafted thrillers.
05:33We don't know what the heck happened here.
05:40Lift is about a group of thieves who are blackmailed into stealing gold from a moving airplane.
05:45The film desperately tries to be mission impossible, with a ragtag group of professionals doing
05:51all sorts of scheming, fighting and conniving to steal a valuable object from an impenetrable
05:57location.
06:05But it was made with a fraction of the talent.
06:07Lift is what would happen if you had Chet GPT write a heist film, a soulless mishmash
06:14of genre clichés and a plot that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
06:18Apparently Netflix is also getting in on the old doldrums of January.
06:295.
06:30Maya Culpa Tyler Perry attempts to make a legal thriller.
06:35The results are exactly what you would expect.
06:38Kelly Rowland stars as Maya, a defense attorney who takes the case of Zaire Molloy, an artist
06:45accused of murdering his girlfriend.
07:01Yawn.
07:03Like rom-coms, legal thrillers are a dime a dozen, and you've seen far better versions
07:08of Maya Culpa before.
07:09The movie looks pretty enough, but it's plagued by bad writing that results in plot
07:14holes, stupid characters, a checklist story, and some absurd dialogue that you have to
07:19hear to believe.
07:28It's reminiscent of all those trashy legal thrillers from the 90s.
07:32Not campy enough, not good enough, impressing no one.
07:414.
07:42Atlas Like many movies before it, Atlas is about
07:46artificial intelligence turning on humanity and deciding that it needs to go.
07:56Enter Atlas Shepard, who is called in to stop the robot uprising.
08:01While the film has two credited human writers, we wouldn't be surprised if this was secretly
08:06the first case of AI writing a movie about itself.
08:11In any case, Atlas is as generic and lifeless as its writing.
08:16Unlike the characters she's named after, Jennifer Lopez cannot hold the weight that
08:21this role requires of her.
08:23Atlas is one of Netflix's biggest swings of the year, but it's a foul ball at best.
08:313.
08:33Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp Look, we hate to criticize kids' movies,
08:37but this one deserves it.
08:42This is a sequel to a movie that allegedly came out in 2017, but we have no recollection
08:48of that, and you probably don't either.
08:51This one sees the anthropomorphic bird getting into goofy shenanigans at a summer camp and
08:56attempting to stop the inspector who wants to shut it down.
09:10This is the type of cheap straight-to-DVD movie that you throw on to distract the kids
09:15for 90 minutes.
09:16The type that gives kids' movies a bad rap.
09:22If you're over the age of 5, Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp has nothing for you, unless you
09:27want to see what Mary Louise Parker has been up to.
09:352.
09:38Rebel Moon – Part 2 – The Scar Giver We hate to say it, but Zack Snyder has sunk
09:44to a new low with his Rebel Moon series.
09:49The first movie was the national laughingstock of the Christmas 2023 season.
09:54We don't know how, but Part 2 made us laugh even harder.
09:59The story makes no sense, the writing is full of clunky exposition, and the acting does
10:04absolutely nothing to engage or elicit even the slightest bit of immersion.
10:19We admire Snyder's ambition, but he really dropped the ball with this.
10:24Given the massive budget and universal derision, Netflix cannot be happy with their return
10:29on investment.
10:30Then again, apparently there's 4 more movies coming, so maybe they are.
11:011.
11:02Mother of the Bride – Don't Be Fooled This movie has nothing in common with Father
11:07of the Bride, and is worse in every conceivable way.
11:15This one concerns Lana, a woman who learns that her daughter is marrying her ex-boyfriend's
11:19son.
11:20It's a little bit of everything.
11:31A cute comedy about letting go of your kid, a rom-com about rekindling lost love, a goofy
11:37meet-the-parents-esque romp with awkward situations.
11:41But you know what they say, jack of all trades, master of none.
11:49It's yet another predictable movie full of cliches, which seems to be Netflix's bread
11:54and butter as of late.
11:56Despite the presence of stars like Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove, and Chad Michael
12:01Murray, it cannot jump over that made-by-committee hurdle.
12:10Did you see any of these flicks?
