00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're stacking up both versions of the live
00:03action Street Fighter films to see which one does the Capcom franchise the most
00:07justice. Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen the 2026 film yet. Now it's time to
00:13fight. What are you waiting for? Forgive me.
00:16Round 1. Action. 1994 Street Fighter doesn't have nearly as much hand-to-hand
00:24combat as you'd expect. Much of the action involves Guile and his troops
00:34storming M. Bison's forces. This makes it look more like a military flick than a
00:38martial arts showdown. While we do get scenes like Ryu and Ken taking on Vega
00:46and Sagat, and Guile's big confrontation with Bison in the finale, the editing
00:51doesn't always do the choreography any favors. There's plenty of shooting and
00:58explosions but the actual street fighting is more of an afterthought. 2026's
01:02Street Fighter understands that audiences came to see people beating the living
01:06daylight out of each other. Admittedly, Katao Sakurai's direction heavily favors
01:14melodrama in the film's action. You might even think you're watching an over-the-top
01:18Bollywood film rather than an 82 million dollar Hollywood production.
01:22Oh, hell no! This is about to get interesting. But to its credit, the film's
01:26choreography also pays attention to each character's fighting style. Fights feel
01:30like one-on-one matches within the games, carrying a gamer-style aesthetic that fans
01:34can relate to. It can get too much at some point, but at least there's still that
01:38Street Fighter flavor underneath, compared to the 1994 version's unbridled machismo.
01:45So, for resembling the source material where it matters most, this round goes to the
01:502026 version. Street Fighter 2026.
01:54Round 2. Story. There's more than one moment where you might wonder if the 1994 film is
01:59deliberately trying to be ridiculous. But there's still some story here to tell. General M. Bison
02:13has taken hostages and is demanding a massive ransom, leaving Guile to lead an
02:17assault on his stronghold. Along the way, Chun-Li seeks revenge against Bison, while Ryu and Ken find
02:26themselves caught up in the conflict. It can get a bit fragmented and all over the place, but these
02:31threads ultimately tie into the single thread of defeating Bison.
02:34Come here, prepare to fight a madman, and instead you found a god?
02:40Even with a simple good versus evil plot, 1994's Street Fighter doesn't need a flowchart for you to
02:45keep track of things. The 2026 version doesn't seem to know what it really wants. The plot splits
02:50between Chun-Li plotting her revenge, Blanka showing up looking for his mother, Ryu fighting his inner darkness,
02:55Ken dealing with his lack of self-worth, and Bison trying to gain power. Even though it
03:00tries to fuse these plot lines together, the film undermines all of them in the process.
03:06By the end, you might just stop caring about each character's individual arc,
03:10since the story cares more about throwing a sudden twist than tying anything up.
03:14Of course, the cliffhanger ending doesn't do it any favors either.
03:21For telling its story straight without leaving too much for a sequel,
03:24the 1994 version takes the win here.
03:30Street Fighter 1994
03:32Round 3. Characters
03:33The 1994 Street Fighter takes some wild liberties with its characters, but it does give most of them
03:38something to do.
03:39Watch your back, Lee.
03:41Hmm, I didn't know you cared.
03:43Guile is the central hero, Chun-Li has a personal score to settle with Bison,
03:46and Ryu and Ken are a pair of hustlers who end up helping the good guys.
03:50Here you go, Saga.
03:51I owe you.
03:54If I had met you, I might have become you.
03:57Even supporting players like Dalsim and Blanka get their own subplot,
04:01while Zangief provides some of the movie's funniest moments.
04:03General Bison, he's a bad guy. If you know this, then why do you serve him?
04:10Because he paid me a freaking fortune, you moron.
04:16You got paid?
04:18Sure, turning the world warriors into soldiers, reporters, and scientists is a strange approach
04:22to adapting a fighting game. But with so many familiar faces competing for screen time,
04:27it's impressive how many actually contribute to the story.
04:30Troopers, out! Throw the enemy into the sea!
04:34The 2026 version goes for a deep character analysis, but fails at adding much depth.
04:39The part I'm on now is not one of combat.
04:43The roster is all there, yet almost none of them get to do anything.
04:47A lot of it is already established when the characters are introduced,
04:50and the film rarely shows us much else.
04:52The fiercest, strongest, deadliest fighters on Earth.
04:56Characters like Guile, Dhalsim, Zangief, Blanka, and Balrog show up in small bursts,
05:01then disappear until the plot calls them back.
05:04Ryu and Ken break up and get back together more than Ross and Rachel,
05:07and Chun-Li's revenge plot goes nowhere.
05:09While the 1994 version knows how to separate the main characters from the supporting ones,
05:13the 2026 movie tries, and fails, to let anyone truly shine.
05:17You lose.
05:18And so, even with a relatively surface level depth, the 1994 roster takes this win.
05:24You'll have to do better than that.
05:26Okay.
05:27Winner, Street Fighter 1994.

05:40Round 4, Villain.
05:42Now, here's the 1994 version's crowning achievement.
05:45No matter what you think of the movie itself,
05:48Raul Julia's greatness can never be understated.
05:50Evacuate at once!
05:52The actor hams up the screen to legendary levels.
05:56Forget chewing the scenery, Julia devours everything in his way.
05:59The actor not only understood the assignment,
06:01but provided a masterclass in making the best out of a ridiculous premise.
06:05And it levitates...
06:09me.
06:12Considering his real-life illness at the time,
06:14Julia's performance deserves all the praise we can give.
06:17For most, a character like this might seem difficult to pull,
06:20but for Julia, it was Tuesday.
06:22For you, the day bison graced your village was the most important day of your life.
06:33But for me, it was Tuesday.
06:37David Dasmalchen had massive shoes, or boots in this case, to fill.
06:41While the actor is gloriously unhinged in his own right,
06:43he seems to be trying to imitate Raul Julia in several scenes.
06:46The film knows it too, even invoking Julia's famous line as an obvious callback.
06:51Dasmalchen's bison isn't as commanding as he is petty.
06:54Although the actor leans into the campy, sinister energy he was supposed to,
06:58there's a lack of natural dominance in his portrayal that Julia exuded.
07:01In his defense, the story deliberately sidelines bison quite a bit,
07:05so maybe we'll get Dasmalchen in all his glory in the sequel.
07:08This tournament is not what it seems.
07:11Julia was always going to be near impossible to top,
07:14and he remains the benchmark for a video game villain.
07:16This round goes to the 1994 film.
07:19Game over!
07:22Street Fighter 1994
07:24Round 5. Humor
07:26There's a difference between laughing with the film and laughing at one.
07:30Unfortunately for 1994's Street Fighter, its humor firmly comes from the latter.
07:34Is this a joke?
07:35Apart from Raul Julia, everything else in the film tries to shoot for more serious themes.
07:40Jean-Claude Van Damme looks like he's trying to turn the screenplay into Rambo,
07:44rather than an off-the-rails video game adaptation.
07:46Are you men enough to fight with me?
07:48The character's tragic backgrounds would have worked better in a different interpretation.
07:52Here though, all the campiness makes it seem like a silly film
07:55that doesn't realize it's made itself the butt of the joke.
07:57While some intentional humor is there,
08:00its legacy is mainly tied to how unintentionally cheesy it comes across.
08:03Jamaica, here I come.
08:05Here we come.
08:07The 2026 version instantly embraces its wild premise.
08:10Instead of pretending to be a serious film hidden behind flips and kicks,
08:14the movie makes comedy part of the experience.
08:16Still reckless.
08:17It clearly took a page out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's playbook in this area.
08:21The humor mainly comes from wisecracks and awkward moments within all the action.
08:24Actors like Andrew Schultz and Eric Andre bring the kind of humor they're known for,
08:28while Cody Rhodes plays against type to portray Guile in all his wackiness.
08:32Such a ridiculous look.
08:34Noah Centineo gets to show his comedic chops,
08:36even if some of it clashes with the melodrama thrown his way.
08:39It isn't perfect,
08:40but at least the film doesn't burden itself trying to be serious when it really couldn't be.
08:44This might sting a little!
08:47For being funny because it wanted to be, instead by accident,
08:50the 2026 version wins this round.
08:53Street Fighter 2026.
08:55Round 6.
08:56Special Effects
08:57Even at the time of its release,
08:59the special effects of 1994's Street Fighter were pretty laughable.
09:03Nooooooo!
09:06After all, films like Aliens and Terminator 2 had been released much earlier,
09:10yet Street Fighter looked like a high school project in comparison.
09:13A $35 million budget wasn't the biggest,
09:16but you could still get more out of it than explosions and occasionally flashy moves.
09:19It doesn't help that time has made even the slightly impressive effects heavily dated.
09:23Moments like Bison's high-tech equipment and flying ability
09:26now look like the kind of bargain bin production you find on the CW network shows.
09:37With more than three decades of technological advances on its side,
09:40the 2026 Street Fighter has a lot more tricks up its sleeve.
09:51The fighters can finally unleash their signature abilities,
09:54without the movie having to work around the limitations of practical effects.
09:57Hadoukens and Psycho Crushers bring some much-needed supernatural spectacle,
10:01while Dhalsim's stretching attacks are no longer restricted to the video games.
10:04It still isn't flawless, not when Blanca looks like a cross between a chunky Hulk and a bulky Shrek.
10:09But between the flashy attacks and colorful visuals,
10:12the reboot has a clear advantage in this department.
10:20With time on its side, the 2026 film scores the victory.
10:24Winner, Street Fighter 2026.
10:27Before we continue, be sure to check out WatchMojo's 24-hour livestream.
10:31All of your favorite videos in one place, 24-7.
10:35Always on, always live.
10:37Are you not entertained?
10:39Round 7. Game Accuracy.
10:42When it comes to costumes, you have to give it to the 1994 film.
10:45The production definitely gave it their best at bringing the appearances and aesthetic of the
10:49characters to life.
10:50Did you get a good look at that video map?
10:51Just got the left hand.
10:53But that's where the similarities end.
10:55After all, a story where Guile is the main hero and Ryu and Ken are sidelined can hardly be called
11:00Street Fighter in spirit.
11:01Then there's the fact that there's no fighting tournament to begin with,
11:04and the story revolves around a military operation instead.
11:07Our troops on the upper levels fall back and turn on the enemy.
11:11We'll trap the forces outside between both of our columns.
11:15We'll do it, Colonel.
11:16Although the fight sequences mimic some of the game's penchant for martial arts and theatrics,
11:20the film could very well be called something else entirely and still be what it is.
11:33The 2026 version should take the honors just for having an actual World Warrior tournament.
11:38Moreover, the film puts Ryu and Ken in the driver's seat.
11:41While the story is hit and miss in execution, it still plays into the larger video game series lore.
11:46I made a promise to protect you.
11:47Not to mention all the animated scenes meant to replicate the games.
11:50Costume designs resemble their characters, right down to Chun-Li's trademark outfit
11:54and Guile's inexplicable hairstyle.
11:56Throw in some Hadoukens and special attacks,
11:59and the reboot does its best at cashing in on its franchise identity.
12:05While it sacrifices some of its more serious material for comedy,
12:09the 2026 film is still instantly recognizable as Capcom's fighting series brought to life.
12:19With a keen eye for fan service, the latest Street Fighter release takes the win.
12:24And with it, the reboot also comes out on top in this battle of video game adaptations.
12:29Street Fighter 2026.
